Bought some 5/16 shafts and all the makings for a dozen arrows, tapered the front of the shaft but the 5/16 field points don't fit. anyone else have this problem?
Tried to cut off the front end of the taper but the point still will not slide all the way on the taper????
I have had some 5/16 shafts that were like that. My 5/16 taper tool wouldn't work and my 11/32 was too big but i used it anyway and ended up putting 11/32 points on them.
Mac, I shoot 5/16 quite a bit. If you get down toward Springfield, I can taper them for you. I use a jig on a disk sander and can taper any diameter. I'm not clear about the tapers not going into the point, unless the angle is too flat, maybe. :confused:
I would first make sure that they are 5/16" and not 11/32". Sounds like they are in-between those sizes. Another thing is make sure your taper is the right angle and not too sharp.
I used to be concerned about the size of the shafts I make and thought that + or - .003" was a wide range until I started measuring factory shafts that I had bought before I started making them. A lot of them were + or - .015".
A true 5/16" shaft would be .312" and I try to get mine to measure from .309" - .315". Getting them all exactly .312" is really tough. Also, depending on the wood variety and soft and hard spots along the length of the shaft, they usually won't measure the same from end to end.

21/64 ?...Are they lam birch by chance?
Just measured them again and the shafts measure 19/64 OD and I measured the feild points also and they are 19/64 also I used a 5/16 taper tool, one of the cheap plastic ones. Guess I will just use 21/32 points on them.
These are sitka spruce.
i was out in my shop tonight grinding tips for broad heads. i noticed the angles differed from Steel force heads to Land sharks. i just set up a jig with my edge sander and stuck the nock end in a cordless drill...they come out looking pretty good...a belt sander and jig would work the same I'm sure....

Some of the plastic taper tools do not taper perfectly. The one I have needs the tip of the taper cut off about 1/6 to 1/8 inch after I taper them. Just use a razor knife and slice it off.
