Title: a bow for wooden arrow - bitterroot static
Post by: trashwood on July 24, 2007, 12:06:00 AM
This bow a Bitterroot static recurve absolutely love heavy hardwood arrows.  the 695gr ash arrow are cut 28&3/8" bop with a big four blade Zephery.  the arrow is cut so that the BH will just touch my index and I drop the string.  Kinda a built in BH clicker

The bow was built the Red Chavez of Bitterroot.  There is kinda of a history behind the bow.  Tooshort had it built for his son, Lad.

I really like the slim trim handle, grip is small with a small throat.  Sight window is very small and compact.

If you like to shoot light carbon arrows, this is not the bow for you. It needs good arrow weight and a well tuned arrow.

the draw weight on the bow is 58#@28".  With the ash arrows I would take on anything I had the idea I could get back to the truck.   :)

Rusty, That is a nice looking bow. I had a chance to handle one of these at cloverdale this year and really wish i would have bought it. Like you said it had a slim grip that was checkered and fit me perfect.

Red is still alive and kicking...he just prefers to build waaaayy fewer bows these days and keeps a pretty low profile.  He works a "real" job these days and builds bows on the side.  I'm lucky to have access to his well earned opinions on bow design and other archery related matters.  He will still build new bows, but as I said, on a very limited basis.  He told me that he plans to start up with bow building and design on a more "full time" basis when he retires from that torturous day job most of us are enslaved by.  You can PM me for contact info if you want to chat with Red some time.

What is the philosophy behind a static recurve guys? to the heavy tips add power, or help in launching heavier arrows with a shorter over all length, or what? They are very cool looking....

This is my first year as a bowyer and i'm still studing different designs.  Thanks......... Kirk

Kirkll - not exactly.  It has several effects.  Most pretty technical and require some study.  In the case of short bows, the static recurves actually decreases the string angle and allow the bow to be drawn to a longer draw then it would allow if the tips worked with the draw.

Most bowyers think that stiff tips add a little more speed.  In the case of static recurves it is a compromise the angle of deflection, the mass of the material it takes to keep them stiff and the overall design of the tips.

Of course they can give ya a little handshock if not designed well and excuted expertly.  In this case with the Bitterroot static it has a bit of hadnshock to me.  the handshock can be over come with arrow weight (and a very good tiller).  My Bitterroot is spot on the tiller so a little extra arrow weight makes in a fine shooter.
