Title: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW
Post by: Nakohe on July 20, 2007, 09:00:00 AM
Man this is all I can think about. I have never in my 56 years of life ever been on a hunt like this. I am like a little kid counting the days to Christmas.LOL Hopefully we will see bulls like this and get chances at them.

Not picking on you, Nakohe..don't think that for a minute..but I've been mulling over that old catch phrase for a few months..and in my opinion it needs tweeking.

There's LOTS of spots you could pick- I hereby officially request we change that to " PICK THE SPOT". There is one PERFECT spot on every critter..dead center double lung..that's what we should say from now on, in my opinion!

Ray, I agree, PICK THE SPOT is more appropriate. Behind shoulder towards off leg quartering away. Am I right?

Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW
Post by: Ray Hammond on July 20, 2007, 11:12:00 AM
actually, its straight up the leg where it enters the body...the bone angles forward as it reaches the bottom of the brisket, headed essentially in line with the top line of the neck, goes about half way to the neck, then angles back up to form the platelike bone of the shoulder blade..so the sweet spot is straight up the leg, and dividing the body into thirds with two lines - its between the two lines...that's the sweet spot.

I will try to find the skeleto-muscular diagram I have somewhere that illustrates this for us and will forward to you.

I'm like adk..I ain't hunted much outside the hogbacks and hollows in my county, so I think I'd be just as pumped up as you for going from here to the North to hunt caribou! I'd be jumping out of my shorts waiting for the days to pass!  Maybe one day when I finish school and I'm making Bill Cosby Billions, I can start taking trips that I've waited years to take!

Maybe this will help get your hopes up. The first pic was taken off my camera. That group went by at 5 yards, me with filled tags. I did end up with a couple though. You are in for a treat, Tuttlik is a great outfitter.

ummmm!uh,uh,uuuh, uhhh!I can't catch my breath. That is what I'm lookin for . What a caribou!I'm just trying to get ready for this deal.I jumped on board late.I can't wait. How much walking can a hunter expect to do each day?I am really concerned about the footwear.I walked smooth out of a pair of boots once on an elk hunt.

I was in Camp Minto. The bou were just over the hill behind camp. Minimal walking for us. I had Felt lined Nokia rubber boots & Danner Gortex Pronghorn boots. Seemed fine for how we hunted.

Don, this sounds very similar to the trip I was on in the DVD.  Eight of us in camp for seven days so we decided that each of us would prepare one evening meal for everyone, then we were on our own for breakfast and lunch.  It worked great.  For my dinner, we had rice pilaf, corn and green beans, fresh lake trout and caribou tenderloin fried in butter.  You guys are gonna have a great time.

Couple words of advice. Let them get close, dont move & they will! I shot mine at 5 yards & 7 yards 30 seconds apart.

More often than not the groups follow one another. When you see one group go through, let them go & move close to that spot. That seems obvious, it is. I saw bou follow in the footsteps of others for 2 days.

It is impossible to  run faster than they walk. I wasted a lot of energy trying to get ahead of groups of big bulls. Glad nobody had film of that, must have looked funny.

Quality raingear is an absolute must. The crappier the weather, the more animals we saw.It will rain, lots... & lots.

Have fun, you will!

Well I just got through mapping our route and looks like from Texas through Arkansas to pick up Brad and Mike then north east through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, north through Michigan to Port Huron, cross into Canada on 402 to 401 to Toronto and north on Canada 11 to 66 and east to 109 and north to Raddison. Look at the map guys and see if that looks like the best route to ya'll. Looks to be the shortest to me. I wish we were leaving tomorrow.

Mike,, please dont plan on cooking.. With peanut butter cheese and mayo sammich I'll pay you to STAY OUT of the kitchen   :help:  I will be contacting the other 3 folks from Missouri and will send out an email later this week with all the details as far as the food goes.

Bigriver and Fletcher, thanks for the advice.

Not long now gents and Lord willin we'll be filling our tags. Two last items I still need to get. A good pair of boots and a set of quality Binos.

Ray,

On the map we will be coming into Michigan on I 75 to I 94 up to Port Huron and crossing on Canada 402 across to where it comes into Canada 401 across to Toronto to Canada 400 north to where Canada 11 splits off and north on Canada 11 to 66 then east to 109. And north into Raddison.
Is that right? I will talk to C J this week and see if we can meet up in Detroit so I do not get lost. LOL

He also purchased a bear tag for this hunt as well. Man with Bob and Donald looks like the bear wont have a chance. Dadgum, I might as well get one myself. WOW, 19 days left before we leave!

Guys,

Looks like you have a heck of a drive. I might suggest you meet at Cabelas in Dundee Michigan. It is just south of Detroit. From there you go north on 23 to 94 which takes you all the way to Port Huron and turns into 403 in Ontario. From there you are 45 minutes till 403 turns into 401 and then 2 1/2 hrs on 401 towards Toronto. Just west of toronto I would recommend you get onto the 407 Toronto bypass (toll road - camera no booths, my understanding non res free) take the 407 for 1/2 hour and get off on 400 north exit. This 407 route could save you and hour or two if you get tied up in Toronto traffic. Don has it right, Port Huron best place to cross, better than Detroit. I live in London 45 mins into Ontario on 403. From San Antonio to my place 32 hrs straight driving. I do it every year for the Texas Sweat hunt. Any questions on Ontario route just shout.

They're picking me and another guy up at Detroit Wayne Airport, Hunt It. The meeting up at Cabelas is a good idea...I'm just wondering if after they pick us up, should we do as you suggest, or cross the Ambassador Bridge?

Ray,

Wayne Airport is right at I 94 so up 94 to Port Huron looks the best to me. There is a Walmart at Exit 231 on I-94 in Roseville just north of where I-696 merges with I-94 That we could all meet up at before we get to Port Huron. How does that sound to everyone?

I wonder if there are any color phase bears up there. I would love to get a chocalate or cinnamon. That woudl be neat. 17 days till I head north. I am really getting excited. All I have ever hunted is deer and hogs here in Texas and deer in Michigan and Maine many many years ago. And deer in New Mexico again many years ago and not successful on any. All I saw in Maine were Moose and that was long before they allowed hunts for them. Got a shot at a six point in Michigan and missed and never saw a buck in New Mexico only does and back then not allowed to shoot them.

To get a chance to hunt theese quality animals was always out of reach for me until now and I thank God for this opprotunity and also thank a very understanding wife. She is truly a gem to put up with my bow addiction and hunting.

And again I thank my brother Danny for influencing me to get back into trad archery. He urged me until he gave me a bow and the rest is history. This lifestyle is so good and true. The people are the best in the world and I hope to meet so many of you at sometime. Especially Vermonster, Frank and Shell, Terry, Littlefeather, and many others I have conversed with on this site. This trip allows me to meet some and I hope future trips will occur. Anyway, enough rambling.LOL

you better get some sleep, Donald...you gotta drive all that way, and then cook meals, wash all our clothes, clean the tents, and if there's time left, you even get to hunt some.

CJ didn't tell you that onyour first trip you haveto make sure all theold hands have a good time BEFORE you get to haveone???

he he....just kidding, bud. I'm looking forward to meeting and hunting with you.

I donotthinkthere are color phase bears up there at treeline like there are in Alberta or Saskatchewan...I mean a color phase could always show up...but the percentages are likely to be small in comparison to black, black bears.

I been looking at the caribou satelite maps and we might luck out and be right in the middle of the migration while we are there.

Is everyone having as much fun as me? I am one excited puppy. Brad and Mike ya'll better be ready, cause I do not know if I can keep the Ford reigned in for long. Whoa Nelly!!!!!  :bigsmyl:    :biglaugh:    :biglaugh:

I was just informed that we probably cannot take buffalo meat into Canada. CWD and Mad Cow to blame. So the bison burger is out. I do not need any hang ups at the border. Sorry guys. We will have lots of bou meat, fish and maybe bear to feast on.

And Bro, if there is any left when you get here it will not be for lack of trying to finish it off.LOL Hamburgers on the grill everytime I am home. Makes great chili also.   ;)    ;)

Talk to your guide before dropping the cash on a bear tag.  Eight of us hunted the east end of Lac Minto and nobody saw any bears or sign.  Bear sign would have to be VERY obvious for me to recognize it, tho.  Lots of caribou, tho.  Good lake trout in the lake, too.

Hey Guys,

Sorry I"ve been away for a few days. The Detroit airport is way north of Cabelas's so scrap that idea. From the airport Port Huron is a much better bet for crossing border. I don't know the airport area well enough to suggest where you guys should meet. HWY 94 turns into HWY 402 at the canadian border. From there you have one hour on HWY 402 before it turns into HWY 401 at London. I would be more than happy to meet you guys for coffee or lunch. In fact my place is only 5 minutes off of 402 and you are all welcome to drop in and I'll have lunch or dinner ready for you guys. Just let me know what works best for you guys.

Somewhere I read someone asked about colour phased bears in Quebec. I have never seen one or heard of any so it will be a real special one if you do see one.

51 degrees farenheit right now..with 14-18 MPH winds. That's kind of typical of my experience in NWT...could be a little warmer...if we luck out and get bluebird weather we will really be doing something...my opinion, prepare for the worst- sideways rain, hail, sleet, and yes, even snow. then if that doesn't happen, you will still be fine.

if we are going to take items like CampMor, the freeze dried or meal in a boil in bag type stuff, we cannot get that at WalMart.I suggest if we decide to do some of that- benefits? Light weight...meal in a pouch...so very little trash or garbage...full of calories...it tastes good, you can hunt all day, boil water and voila, meal is ready...might be mighty handy when guys are rode hard and put up wet from hunting all day...some bread, some freeze dried orpowdered eggs, some bacon, jams orjellies, spaghetti and sauce in a plastic jar...beef jerky and dried fruit to carry inyour pack during the day...allwe needto know is what we have to cook on...gas stove...firewood...and do we need to bringpots.

Sounds good Ray. Where can we get it. We can be varried on this. Some of this and some of that. all easy to fix.

I think all the pots and pans a stuff are there. I do not know what type of cooking fuel.

Mike did you say you had a check list?

I agree on the shopping for the other stuff besides campmor, at Walmart where we meet up.

www.campmor.com (http://www.campmor.com)  is where you can purchase the backpack meal items. There are several varieties and my backcountry hunt guru tells me NOT to use Mountain House as its full of preservatives...there are a couple other brands that are better.Backpackers Pantry were the ones he felt were much tastier. and very filling.

hey guys - I've been on a lot of out of state hunts over the last 15 years, Colorado a lot, South Dakota, New Mexico, Kansas, Missouri ..... I haven't been this excited about a hunt since my Dad and I backpacked into Colorado in 1995 !

Can I bring my electric espresso machine ? I can make everyone latte's and cappuccino's   :goldtooth:   heck I can even bring a few shots of caramel, almond and hazlenut and we'll have a Camp Kat Starbucks !

I read something a few pages back that I'm very curious to challenge ....... and that is running down and heading off a group of caribou. For some reason, I liek to make things as difficult as possible for myself, and the idea that I can't glass a group, catch up and head them off ? That's like a moth to the flame for me !
Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW
Post by: Ray Hammond on August 14, 2007, 10:43:00 AM
Brad,
If you could run as fast as Bo Jackson you could not do an end run on caribou that are walking.

Once you see them moving you will understand. Now if they are feeding slowly, not MOVING moving, of course you can get in front...but if they are walking, they are traveling faster than you can run by a long shot.

If they are migrating, which they should be at that time, you shouldn't have to run ahead..you just glass from high where a group is walking, and then go to a pinch point- rocks, trees, etc in that path, and more will be following that same bunch you glassed very soon.
Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW
Post by: Nakohe on August 14, 2007, 12:14:00 PM
Brad,

If you challenge yourself into trying that, you will be very dissapointed and not have a very enjoyable hunt. I have talked to several people and they all agree with what Ray said. You will never be able to run down migrating caribou that are on a walk. Many have tried and found it to be true. Like Ray says. Glass for them to see their route and find a place near that route and wait. More will be coming on the same path. It has been that way for centuries.

Man two weeks and I will nearly be to your house Brad by this time. Are you pumped yet. We will all three be asking are we there yet by the time we get to Raddison.LOL

Hey Gilbert, Thanks, I have soft t/d cases for my bows and I bought my rain gear off of three rivers site. Plus I have some wools. Good luck on your hunt also.

I just looked at the website maps. Which camp are we going to be in? Does anyone know yet. I am also following the migration satellite maps. I konw they are no precise, but so far it looks good for our time there. The lakes and rivers of Lac Minto will run red with caribou blood if all goes well. I get goose bumps and such an adreiline rush just thinking about it. 13 more days and the dance begins. HOOOOOORAY!!!!YEEEEHAW!!! AND YIPIEEEEEEEE!!!

how many days until we leave ??

:)

I shot well out to 40 yards tonight. Not bad on my release, which is what I'm struggling with.

I jumped into my neighbors pasture and chased his horse from one end to the other. Its not easy to be honest, and more difficult than I'd though. Still, I've not abandoned chasing down a migrating herd of bulls just yet. I packed runners flats, a pair of Nike cross trainers with cleats and of coure, unless its stickery, I'll more than likely just hunt barefooted.

Ya'll aint never seen a bowhunter like me before  :)

Oh lord, does anyone know cpr??? Brad "jungle man" is going to need it. Brad stay out of the horse pasture and work on shooting a moving target. The shot placement is going to be more vital than seeing if you can chase one down. But if you are gung ho and you can run it down do me a favor and jumpp on it and ride. I want to get footage of that and sell it Hollywood. No seriously though, please all of us work on shooting moving targets that is what our challange will be.

I never claimed to be a "normal" trad hunter. I'm going to run down a migrating caribou herd. I shoot graphlex arrows and Thunderhead broadheads. I use a raquettball glove sometimes to shoot with. I don't eat much, drink even less and can if I don't have an espresso in the morning I'm in for a HEADACHE FROM HELL. I'll soak my caribou meat in cold water ASAP, I'll cut the skull plate of a 350" bull in a heartbeat and I fletch my arrows with pink and purple fletching.

I like bubble baths

I cry at movies, like Bridge to Terabithia

I want to be at one with the Force

I'll be the guy who vounteers to go the furtherst from camp to hunt, and the farthest hike back.

I play fantasy football - I got 6 leagues

uh ......... something else guys, I sleep in women's lingerie. Nothing funny with my preferences or anything, I just like the soft feel of it   :biglaugh:

oh boy, Ray & Don and I are sleeping in the skinning shed.
Brad, don't worry about hiking far from camp. We have a camp guide in camp with us and he takes us out and brings us back. I dont believe they want us tracking off 20 miles from camp on our own.
As far as your bubble baths you might can use lake minto and swirl around in the water.
Also Brad the skinning shed is nasty and stinks real bad and you will not want to come in there after Ray drinks his elephant juice. Makes him have a real baaaaaaaaaad smell about him. Kind of makes him act like an old bull elephant with real long ivorys..

I am bringing a pack frame and I believe you have opffered the same so we ought to get enough hiking in. I want to try to get everyones hunt on video as well.

just read a report on Bowsite ..... the caribou are almost to Minto Lake ...... boys in 14-15 days we might find ourselves in the middle of a migration !!!!!!

Brad you can run down a herd of caribou if you can clear 35 mph over rough ground. Atleast that is the speed that I measured a few years back on a couple of groups.

Have fun guys

I talked to Mr. Walker tonight and he is just as excited as the rest of us. He seemed to think I needed to get pumped up a little more as he did not want to share camp with a bunch of down in the dumps guys. LOL What Me Not Pumped!!! I am on so much adreniline right now my heart would run for two days if I were to pass on.   :jumper:      :jumper:

I sure hope C. J. can video everyones hunt like he wants to. I think we are going to be covered up with caribou. It will be hard to pick out the best one there will be so many. I just know the Lord is going to bless us with a bountiful harvest and I thank Him now in advance for it.

Lets have fun guys!!!!

Danny - LOL !  Thats the curve of the riser, with the light catching it just right I think !

My buddy took his pride and joy BW elk hunting with me. Walking into the hunting area, he sit across a bit rock, turned and off she slid. After picking it up, and admiring the deep scratches and scuffs engrained into the woods/finish, he simply said " character marks "

Hope you can say the same if that gorgeous pice of art finds a similar fate in Quebec !

Nope no crack Bro.LOL Brad has it right. I questioned the guy I got it from and he sent me some other pics I have at home and no line in other pics. He suspected the light catching the curve just right.Trust me I will be closely inspecting it when I get home. Should be there by Tuesday.

Mike if you ask me real nice, I will probably let you shoot it.  ;)

Brad, I like pretty bows, but I do not get them to not hunt with em. A fine peice of work like that deserves to be doing what it was made for. HUNTING. LOL

Ok, I ran into a snag with my bow and to make a long story short Bob morrison coached me through a shelf modification a little work with a wood rasp and I think it's where it needs to be.I was beginning to get a little concerned as close as we are to the hunt.I bought an extra set of limbs and had to get arrows spined and built for them, extra strings stretched and 11 broadheads sharpened. If thats not enough I guess I be camp cook and run the camara.I am getting real close to being completely prepared. How's it coming for the rest of you?  :campfire:

I don't think I can match Donald's pre-hunt adrenaline, but once we're there guys, I'm a full bore kind of hunter.

I got some seal skin today to tinker with my Zipper a bit. Seems on about 1 of every 3-4 shots I get a nock high kick on my arrows. I'm thinking my shelf material (being really worn flat) doesn't allow me much "give" and a poor release is amplified because of it.

If I'm wrong ? I'm 5 days from leaving on a 2000 mile trip with a bow that might or might not send a straight flying arroa  :o
Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW

Brad, you really need to contact Ray he has a Zipper and he darn near shoots flys off of fence posts with the bow. Ha has had it since Noah built the ark and knows all about setting it up. I honestly cannot think of a better person to ask about setting a bow up than Ray.

Brad, go get some velcro from Wal mart...and use the side that doesn't have the burrs on it (the soft piece) as your rug and side plate.

Zippers really like that stuff...I don't care for sealskin nearly as much as the velcro

Just heard they have begun to take caribou in Deception Bay..the camp that is farthest north and east of our camp...Camp Kat.

If you look at the map you will see that our camp is the farthest West of all the camps, and is about 100 miles, maybe a little less, from Deception Bay.

Caribou, when moving, easily cover more than 100 miles a week in their trek...so hopefully........

Guy's, there is an old saying that goes like this. No expectations = No disappointments. That is the best I can do when it comes to hunting. I am however expecting to have a GREAT time with you all on this hunt. If you are expecting to get a bou, and you do then you have met your expectations. If you don't then there will be disappointment. The only thing I can advise everyone on, is to go on this hunt expecting to have a wonderful time, meet new folks and learn a heck of alot from each other. If you do that then I can promise you that you will enjoy your trip.

Ok gang, I just got off of the phone with Gordie aka Bearman and he said that the caribou are headed to Minto. He said Noah that lives in one of the northern villages had to fly out for something in his helicopter and saw a very substantial size herd heading to Minto. Gordie also stated that time is on our side and with his guess he thinks we are going to have a good time. One thing he did state over and over was bring the bug dope and 2 head nets. They have never had a spring up there like they are having and the bugs are bad. He did say Boney told him that it is cooling off to sround 40 with the wind chill factor but the bugs are there. So a must take is bug dope, head nets and duct tape and gloves that you can wear when you shoot.

take a thermacell, Hill Boy..with lots of cannisters and strips.  Also, a product like Ben's or Muskol with deet. I don't like bug dope..so gloves with bug juice on the, and taping up my cuffs and glove ends and a full headnet is what I am going to try with the thermacell.

Brad, my man. I can really relate to you concerning this. I have cut down from 15 cups of coffee a day to one or two. Hope to never get back to drinking that much again.
Kind of like my uncle. He quit smoking once and said that he didn't cough worth a darn so he started back.
I will be bringing my coffee even if it is instant yuk!  :knothead:

Man how things change in 30 mins. We just received a call from my mother in-law and my father in-law had his knee replaced 2 days ago is just now being taken back for an emergency procedure. Said his bowels have stopped working and they are having to go in and see if there is a blockage. Please pray for him if you all would. My wife is torn apart and don't know what to do at this point. I have told her that if she needs to go to him, go ahead. I sure hope this all works out. If she has to go to Texas I'll have to back out of the hunt at the last min. to take care of my children while she deals with her father. Everything else will remain in place meaning my truck will still be driven up by Tim from Colorado and everyone else will go as planned. All I can do is ask everyone to PLEASE pray for him.

I received my new bow in today. Mark Horne was not kidding when he said that it would only take 45 mins to get it tuned in. I haven't even made it over to Rays yet and I already am close to busting nocks @ 25 yards. From what Ray told me this morning his shooting is once again something to behold. He made up some new arrows for this hunt and after trying them out,, well lets just say some re-fletching had to be done. I have watched Ray shoot and he is flat out deadly with that Zipper bow of his. ARE YOU GUY'S READY TO HEAD NORTH???  :archer:
Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW
Post by: BradLantz on August 25, 2007, 02:51:00 PM
I shot broadheads this morning, pretty well. Best shot was a leaf at about 40 steps, but overall not bad shooting at all. I could NOT get that seal skin to stick to my shelf, so I used sticky back felt from Wal-Mar - great arrow flight now, I noticed no nock kick on any of my shots.

I'm ready - tonight I'll pack my bow and everything, re-weigh, leaving Monday morning to meet up with Mike and Donald

All I have left to pack is the food I'm bringing and I now need to go make 2 extra strings.

Hey gang, Bob Walker came up with an excellant idea. Please check your email. I am sending out an email asking for everyone's phone number. The three gents that we are meeting up there from Missouri have purchased phone mins and have said that we could bye some of their time for us to call back. What I figure we would do is have one person call home to their wife or whomever and then that persons wife could contact all of the other families and let them know the update and that all is well.

Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW
Post by: CJ Pearson on August 26, 2007, 02:23:00 PM
OK. I just got off of the phone with Bearman and he said that he talked to Adam that was working at camp Kat. He said that he figured the migration to be close due to the fact they are seeing a few caribou and as they were flying out of camp they noticed 4 swimming in the water. Normally by this time they are covered with caribou but this is turning out to be a not so normal year for the north country. He did say that with the wind blowing like it is up there he did not see where a Thermacell was going to be much good. Personally though I'd still bring one,but also bring the bug dope and be prepared for black flies. Duct tape for the cuffs and head net and gloves. From the sound of things it is looking like we are going to have to hunt hard if we are going to be successful in harvesting a bou.

Some rain...but not torrential downpours called for...that's another plus.

Border Bob left his vehicle at my place and CJ and Tim picked him up and headed north at approx. 3PM this afternoon...so those three nimrods should have arrived in Detroit about an hour ago. Sure hope they don't have to pack anything else in that truck as space appeared to be very limited.  Don't know where they're going to put their dead critters for the return trip.

we ( Nokohe, Hill Boy and I ) are an hour out of Indianapolis right now

in short, a heck of an adventure, spectacular country, amazing fishing, great guys to hunt with, good food and a good camp ......... no caribou

and when I say no caribou, I mean there wasnt any caribou within 15-20 miles of us. none

no caribou

none

not even a fresh track

I was afraid of that. If you were at Lake Minto, the migration maps look like they will be there this week or next. That is a real bummer,to spend that much time and money on a trip of this magnitude and not even see a bou. I take it on this "budget hunt" they would not move you to where the bou were?

Be safe coming home and spin some stories when ya can cause I know you had fun anyway.

I take it there were no bears around either?

Danny

Post by: BradLantz on September 06, 2007, 06:07:00 PM
2 bears seen was what I heard

This was the drive up hunt but Nick, the camp guy, said I believe the laws are now that you can't "chase" the caribou - your camp is your camp, bou or no bou

Everything about the hunt was a success except the hunting itsself and lack of any caribou. That was the only negative, everything else was positive

CJ, Bob, Donald, Tim, Ray .......... good gawd what some characters they are !

That's too bad. Caribou hunting is the most feast or famine hunting that there is IMO. There may be 10,000 caribou one day and non the next.

Glad the camp, company and fishing was good at least.

I would not hunt with someone that wouldn't move me if there were no bou around. If that's the new law, i won't be hunting up there. period.

like Mickey said it's feast or famine, hunting and not killing.  sounds like a good time was still had by all.  i know someone took some photos and there has to be a story to tell from this hunt.....let's hear it gents!

Not sure about a new law that prohibits being moved but the 2 times I went we were told we would be moved but each time it did not happen.
All there camps were full or there were no caribou at the camps that were not. It's just a crap shoot for sure. I did take one the 2nd time but it sure is hard to hunt hard when you know there are no caribou to be found. I feel for you guys.

Sorry to hear this guys. This is always a problem with the southern camps. These outfitters have all this money invested in their camps and can not afford to keep moving and building each year. So they continue to keep booking them up and crossing their fingers. The migration changes from year to year based on food and climate. They are still allowed to move you to the herd. The guys in the south will tell you no because they don't do it. Lets look at the situation, they have every camp filled up. the only thing they can do is switch you with another group that wants moved also. The northern camps out of Fort Chimo are much better bet and they do move hunters to herd. They don't move camps but they fly guys to the herd each day by chopper if no caribou in camp. However this comes at a cost $4,000.00 to $6,000.00. Not for everyone.
Title: Re: Caribou "D" Day we are off with pics YEEEEHAW

they would have moved us...if they had a place to move us to, and we had the pockets to cover it..on the other hand...I would not have done a hunt like Mirage does...flying people out in front of the animals in helicopters and float planes daily..not my cup of tea.

Its not killing, its hunting. Last year, the same week we were there this year, Camp Kat was covered up in 'bou. Two weeks ago they were 70 miles away and headed for us..I would not have switched with anyone based on what we knew at the time we left.

There's a good deal more to a hunt than taking game- being flown up in front of animals ? I'm not sure what that is but it's not the hunting I want to do.

the cost of the flying around, the not having a vacant camp to put us in, the weather itsself would have stopped any relocating for at least 2 days I imagine and we all knew up front I think that Tuttulik doesn't "chase" the herds, thus their 1/2 price off the next hunt policy if you are 'bou-less like we were

Ray said at one point you can control your comraderie, you can control how well you eat (and we did !) but you cannot control the weather or the animals. Do all you can to make the hunt successful, control what you can control.

As we were driving down the James Bay Road from Radisson, Quebec to Amos, Quebec (685 kilometers I believe) we had 5 wolves run out and try to cross the road in front of us. Whew- with CJ Pearson driving the speed limit we would have had serious damage done to the rig had the alpha male not spotted us and turned back right away.

2000 miles in 33 hours, with a stop outside Detroit at Cabelas for a bison brat with all the fixins.

Bob Walker had his iPOD loaded up with Escanaba in Da Moonlight and I got to watch that...you need to do yourself a favor and see this movie about the oldest "buckless UP-er gets his buck" story!

Beautiful wild flowers, all kinds of berries on the ground, ptarmigan changing from brown to white, wolves howling, canada geese and ducks, impossibly-beautiful brook trout and lakers in the coldest water I've ever stuck my hand in and so clear you can see 30 feet to the bottom in..what a trip.

Mike aka Hillboy, Brad, Bob, Don, TK RW LD Pearson and the rest of the guys were a real fun group and I enjoyed myself immensely. We even got our camp guy and three compounders all shooting recurves and longbows one night and they had a blast doing it!

a few pictures

wolf pup, he and 2 litter mates and 2 adults lived over the hill a ways from camp Kat - i saw them 4 of the 5 days we were there, they howled at me one morning

First day Mike and I hunted around. Saw the above wolf pup, some great scenery, walked a few miles ....... last sunshine for 3 days I think  :(

Zipper Extreme with some nice sceneery, next 2 photos

this one was a tease - the whole western edge of a rain storm left the sky all rainbowed ...... I took a lot of photos of this and really, only this one turned out well, and it doesn't show the whole sky of rainbow, only the one over the lake

this was taken on the last bad weather day - and it turned out well considering the wind/rain.

Thanks for posting the photos Brad. I have to agree what everyone here has posted that we did have a great time and really got enjoy each others company. I have a video that if I ever get figured out how to post it on here it is of Bob Walker catching about a 2.5 lb. brook trout on a 4 weight fly rod. That in itself was enjoyable enough for me.

Well guys we are back from our Great Adventure. Even though we saw no caribou we all to a man had a wonderful time. I could not have asked for a better group of men to ride up with or share camp with. To a man all were fun to be with and looked out for one another and shared knowledge and many stories and jokes. Lots of fun times. I would do it all again. I saw wolves, geese, ducks, a bear, and caught some fish and walked some of Gods most beautiful country. We saw bears and a lynx on the drive up.

The ride up was a hoot. At the border Mike "The Felon" Wheaterford shared a arrest story with the Canadian Customs agent that jolted Brad and I. We laughed about it the whole trip. I thought we were in jail or turned back for sure.LOL

After 2,356 miles from my house we finally arrived in Raddison and flew to camp the next day.

well, finally got a chance to breathe. Going to upload some photos and give you a taste of where we went-sights, smells, sounds, etc.

We drove up the James Bay Road to Radisson, Quebec...681 miles...one place to get gas on the whole length of it..this is a set of falls on a river called Le Grand Riviere...and they told us the flow was only about 1/5th of what it used to be, due to the large dam being built in Radisson on the upper end of the river.

Honestly you should not have any issue at camp Kat. The caribou started moving in there yesterday. Purchase a fishing license and a small game as well. Fishing will be catch and release but the fishing is great. Also plan on taking plenty of pictures

seriously, I would reccommend better raingear than I had, taking meals you can cook in the oven thats at Kat (canned biscuts, entre's you can heat up in the oven etc like lasagna ) buy a fishing license, its incredible fishing, take plenty of photos and have the best time you can regardless of weather and the migration

you can purchase it anywhere in Quebec...you do not have to buy it through Boney. If you are driving up, stop in Amos, or Matagami and get one on the way up.

Well Gang it looks like we have a chance for 2 return trips. Some are going next year and then some in 2009. Once everyone has made their decision on returning either in 2008 or 2009 I will post the open slots that will be available and again it will be whoever responds first that gets the slot.
I got word today that the camp we were in tagged out as of yesterday. Looks like we were just a week to early for the caribou.

Justin, you all should hit it at a good time. Normally under normal conditions and in years past the time that we were there they are usually all over camp. Good luck and get back to us with pictures.
Enjoy yourself and tell Nick Howdy from C.J.
