Had a great day playing with the TD Longbow (named El Cheapo) I finished a couple of weeks ago. "Arrowslinger" made me a nice FF string so I could test it against dacron, and it does make a nice difference in arrow speed. I have lots of numbers to play with, but....I was shooting some heavy woodies right at dusk tonight, first two in the kill zone at 15ish yards on my javelina, then this.......

:banghead:
The nock on my wood arrows was a little loose, but not bad, on the FF string - but evidently I pulled it out of the nock before I released and I dry fired el Cheapo. Not a good night. Does the Man-law allow a group hug?
The limbs seem solid, I'll have to see if I can recover them and make a new riser.
The interesting part was I went from about 163 to 168 going from dacron to FF with a 560 grain arrow (about 50# draw at 29") and from 179 to 187 with a 425 grain arrow. I don't know if one was quieter than the other, but the FF had a little higher frequency even with the same yarn puffs at the same location. Oh, well. All kind of moot now with this....

Don't know about you, but we need a "crying" emoticon.
Anybody glue risers back together? I've always heard the glued joint is stronger than the wood itself..... But here's my consolation, my last two shots were killers!

Glad your not hurt!
I feel your pain!
Ouch! :scared: Any other casualties?
No injuries at all. The part landed just as you see in the photo, with the riser, limb and arrow in the foreground at my feet. Surprisingly, didnt' scare me, just landed all over the backyard. Blah!
that bites!!! mmm
Dang it Steve!!! :scared: Glad it didn't whack ya! I liked that bow, make another riser!
If the riser was walnut, that could be why it broke. Try actionwood or bubinga on the next one. Glad your not hurt. I purposely dryfire alot of my own bows to make sure they hold up. Never had a problem with using the above mentioned woods. Mike
OUCH! I feel for you man...
Mike,
It is (was?) walnut. Hadn't heard about that being a problem. Was hoping the phenolic inlay would support any wood. It went right through the valley of the grip, the thinnest part of the phenolic - split right there then up along the grain of the walnut. Maybe leaving the phenolic thicker would have helped.
Steve
Ouch, I hope ya can save the limbs. I really enjoyed the build a long. Not much of a warning huh? Shawn
Use dymondwood next time, it will hold up to bombs and even though pricey, it will be worth it in the long run!! Shawn
Good you are ok. Check the limbs over real good. If they are ok then build another riser with a better wood. Walnut makes a good lam but not a riser.Bubinga is cheap enough. You should still put some accents in it to give more strength.
With deepest sympathy. Yes, group hugs are allowed by man-law. I am very sorry for your loss.
Dan
Bummer man... However, I try to stay positive... , Now you have to do some shopping... And you get to build a new bow!!! Lil consolation as El Cheapo looked nice and by the last group, was a fine shooter too...
Uh as for group hug... uh nope... I can't do it, I'll bow my head and give you three pats on the back... and if I run into you.. I'll buy a few cold beerages of your choice and bend your ear on how you make such a fine looking bow that you can call cheap....
I'm over the initial shock, Slasher, so we can do without the group hug! :jumper:
But, I will take you up on the cool beverages if the occassion arises.....on that note, you going to the TBG banquet next weekend?
STeve
why did it break? the handle looks to be the thickest strongest part!
Bummer man, nice looking bow. If theres a bright side, I would rather make a new riser than a new limbs.
Eric
We grow up hearing about walnut stocks and hard wood etc, but in reality it is not by comaprison with other woods around the world.
Great limb lam wood though. My rule - Always multi laminate risers, stay away from wood arrows, and FF. But hey I'm picky and an instigator. :bigsmyl:
