Title: Taking the Plunge to Traditional
Post by: stick_string on July 13, 2007, 11:20:00 AM
Well,
I have to say that I think you guys are going to be hearing alot from me from now on.  Today, I sold my Mathews on **** and am going TOTALLY TRADITIONAL from this point on!!

This will be quite a challenge since most of the people my age (27), are bent on the fastest bows with 18 pins in their sights.    :knothead:   Well, today I join what I think is the elite...the guys who get close   :campfire:  , and I just want to say.....thanks to Raw Hide for the Bob Lee recurve I will be getting   :archer:

Congrats and good hunting.  Now in advance be warned.  Do not let it get you down when you have a nice chance and blow a shot.  Or an awesome buck walks just 5 yards outside your range and feel like kicking yourself.  It will happen!  Put that mental energy into trying to figure out why he walked over there, did this or that, and grow on it.  Eventually he will be 3 yards from the base of your tree with your muscles like jelly!

Welcome. There are many other recovering compound shooters here as well. I will warn you though, this stuff is ADDICTIVE!

Ben, I didi the same thing at the same age.  I have never regreted it, I am sure that you will find a lot more enjoyment with the intamacy that comes with shooting traditional gear.  It IS addictive.
Semper Fi,
Mike

Well,
I knew I wanted to do it when I got a black widow and practiced with it 4 to 5 times a week and never touched the compound.  Then when I picked up the compound it just wasnt fun lining up pins, peeps, and the mechanical stuff.  Traditional just seems natural.

You will really like your Bob Lee.I never had you problem about giving up the compound but I quit smoking and I know it can't be as hard as that.Kip

PLUNGE? Pfft... You've just graduated by stepping up to traditional. I did the same last year at 26. My good friend had a compound that I was shooting, and it only required that you place the pin on the target and pull a trigger. BORING! I'm not sure how I stumbled on to tradgang, but thank heavens I did. I aquired a real nice bow out of the classifeds, and was generously given a slew of starter arrows by one of the regulars here - Danny Rowan (thanks for feeding my addiction!) Its just so much more fun and challenging than a compound, I've even gotten my friend to give up his training wheels.

Nothing compares to traditional. It's addictive, fun, and when you take that first deer, you'll be ruined. LOL!

I agree with the aboved statement: "You have graduated".

The feeling I had when I started with a compound 17 years ago felt rather "natural" then as well.  Then I digressed to mechanical releases, shorter and faster arrows, and sights that did not have any daylight between pins.  Now, I'll be selling my training wheel bow and taking to the woods with a renewed sense of enjoyment.  It is a little overwhelming, but in a good, exhilerating, rush of adreneline sort of way! I can only imagine how one's first traditional harvest must feel but look forward to feeling it soon.

PS/ the helpfull advice and opinions from every one here has given me the push I needed to go Traditional.
Thanks
Shane

Good job! I sold my mathews 2years ago and have tagged 4 deer with my trad bow's.You wont regret it.Just enjoy the hunt, gettem close, and expect to miss once in a while. You wont ever miss that compound magnum rifle unless your just intrested in killing alone. The hunter enjoys a stick and string and a good hunt.kill or no kill
