From October 26-30, I will be hosting (in a sense) a trad bowhunt on public groud in Southern Indiana. This will be very informal. Here is the website about it: 2007 Southern Indiana Bowhunt (http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/2007JWBowhunt.html) Consider yourselves invited. No RSVP is required but feel free to post here if you will be coming. It'll be fun.
John,
I'm still planiing on being at this one!
Dennis
I'll try and make it as well.....will pass the info on to my trad friends.
Terry
I would but thats when the bucks are starting to get it in gear around here..... :(
Dean, they rut in Southern Indiana too :)
Hey John , we may fill up the campground! I've got this thing advertised on PA AND Bowyer's Journal.
I'm there!
John...you sure about that? Don't southern Indiana deer rut according to Central Time? They rut on EST where I live.
otto..that's funny, right there. i don't care who ya are...
still planning to join ya'll...
I would have loved to come if i would have known a few months earlier. Vacation time is at a premium and i have to plan it out in january for the whole year. I'm sure it will be a great time. Maybe next year if you decide to have it again. Just make sure you guys take plenty of pics for us.
Ant idea what the license fee would be for a non-resident?
If you click on his link then click on hunting regulations all the info is there.
Chris, this could be fun :)
Steve, from what I understand about your place, the bucks rut anytime there is a big crowd of menstruating women riding The Beast.
Chad, you work weekends? It's less than 3 hours away from West Union :)
$150 for a non-resident deer license. $31 for small game.
Is the $150 all ya need for deer ?
About how far from Louisville Ky would it be?
Sounds like fun....
Mark,
I think so. Go to the link above and click the link for DNR. I'd call them for sure. No sense taking my word for it. Make sure and get the name of the person you talk to. It's less than an hour from Louisville.
I will be there... just got the OK from the Wifey
I also have the privilege of having the Little Delta Bow at that time!!! I will be bringing her along for anyone that wants to shoot her... sorry, but I will be hunting with her though :D
Kevin.
I'm hoping to come even if I only can get a small game licence. I'll have to see how things go closer to the date.
Should be a good time though.
I'm planning on attending.
John,
Yep I work every weekend unless i take vacation. If you do this hunt next year, I'll try to make it.
Hello "cough cough", this is Chad "cough"..I'm not feeling so good today "cough"..should be better by Monday though "cough"
I'm sure if your bosses know you Chad, they won't be at all suspicious when you call in sick on a weekend in late October :) You should be fine. I'll get you a doctor's note. I work for a physician who might could be bought for some backstrap :)
Looks like this should be a good turn out! I am really looking forward to this trip, it will be my first deer hunt outside of Michigan
I have an Osage bow that I have been working on for about a year and a half now, have her just about floor tillered and it will be great to get some of the expert opinions (aka HELP!!) from the guys that will be there.
Yep, this will be great... get some help on the selfbow, hunt Indiana whitetails, and share the "Little Delta Bow" with you guys :D
Take care and I look forward to meeting you all.
Kevin.
The doctors note is not a problem as Shannon is the one who writes them where she works! :D I sure wish i could come as i think it will be a blast.
i live about 20 min away and may come hang out with all of you , i also know alot of good public spots and could help a few find a spot to hunt.
John,
Excellent. You can guide me. I've seen some of your deer :)
where you see any of my deer ???
on the wall at bass pro!!! LOL....
This is starting to look like a memorable hunt.
John, just found this thread, and it sounds like fun.I lived for quite some time about 4 miles from there and now live in Seymour near catfishon. All the way up the valley where the campground is there is a nice shelter house as well as another one about half way up the same area.Maybe one could be used for whatever. Both have fireplaces as I remember. The last one has one of those nice new fangled pit toilets the state is now using. You may want to run that past the folks down there so that it is left unlocked. (I think they do lock them in Winter)I know one year my wife's company had a halloween type hayride that same weekend and used the shelter house for that.
I have hunted that area quite a bit, mostly back in the horse trail area.(due East from where the campground is) Good deer and squirrel country. Part of the Forest is also across the highway from the main part about a mile away. No camping over there but lots of woods to hunt. You northern boys might ought to get your climbing legs in order. We got hills down here !
I don't know who is in charge down there right now. The former property manager died some time back in a plane crash/ suicide deal.I think the place is in a bit of flux right now but all in all they are good folks to work with.
sounds like a blast, Im in!
i guaranty anyone who shows up for this will get to shoot a deer!!!!
just not sure what kind it will be.
delta, rinehart, McKenzie :goldtooth:
I will be there that weekend. I may night be able to stay the whole weekend but I will show up. I hunt a piece of private ground a little south of there. Sounds like a great time.
Tim,
I'm glad you chimed in. I'm heading down there in August some time for a scouting/camping trip. I'll check it all out and get a general game plan in order. Someone bring a guitar and we'll sing campfire songs :)
Glad to hear from everyone else that is coming. Seeya.
John
TTT
did you make it down here yet john???
keep us posted .i'm looking forward to october
No. I'm thinking September 8-9 for a squirrel hunting, camping, scouting trip with my kids. As of Saturday, 2 of them are hunters now.
cool , are they also bow makers???
Yes. They all have made or at least done a lot of the work on their own bows.
Hey John we are having our first annual Michigan Trad Gang bow hunt October 12th - 14th up in beautiful Atlanta Michigan. If I still have money left I hope to try and make it for a day or so?
So, did you make it out there for a scouting trip John?
Kevin.
I may only be able to make a day trip down. Its only a couple hours from my house. Ive got a busy schedule during the last of oct and beg of nov. I would like to bring my kids down to see the bow building and the Little Delta Bow that they here me talk so much about. Hopefully we will get to some some lucky hunters with a nice buck or doe as well!
Still planning on attending.
I did not make it down for a scouting trip. Between sports and scouts and church and the stormy weather, we bailed out. I'm still going to make it down there before the hunt though.
I am thinking about driving over sometime soon.
John,
I'm planning on going down this weekend (saturday or sunday (after church) ) if you'd like to go call me at 317-502-2513
Joe
Alright, you guys head down there and find me a great spot and put the name "luv2bowhunt" on the tree :D
I can't wait for this hunt, really looking forward to meeting you guys and getting some quality hunting time in.
Kevin.
Guys just got word that Mr. Vic may be coming to visit the last week or so in Oct. might just bring him down, if it's ok.
Joe don't forget your GPS! :jumper:
I'm not sure what's going on Sunday but I may be able to make it Joe. I teach Sunday School 'til 10:15 or so. I'll call.
I would love to come with my son, but I think I have to work that weekend. I sounds great!!!
Well, Joe John did ya get down there or not?
Whats the mast crop looking like? Find any good staging areas? How far do you have to walk to get outside the camping area
/no hunting zone?
Wife ain't too happy about me coming on account of my recent trip to Montana. I'm gonna show up anyway on friday and prolly spend the night and part of the day Saturday. Don't know bout hunting though. Depends on whether or not I got my 2 in the freezer by then or not. ;)
Didn't get to go. John called and left a message but I got called into work and couldn't get down there
I looked at some online topo maps of the area and this aint the beginning of the prarie. Very hilly and I saw some draws and ridges that might be funnels.
I just spent 15 minutes typing a detailed report only to have my browser crash before I submitted it!!!!!!!!!!!
Here's the skinny:
I went down on Sunday and found some nice spots to camp. We'll have a good time for sure at least doing that.
The forest is really dry and the acorns are small. But they are plentiful and the deer and squirrels are hitting them. I snuck up on a couple even in the crunch! Young stupid ones, my favorite type. The squirrels weren't as numerous as I had hoped but they were there in some number.
I found a couple nice hollows. The SF is some of the steepest country you'll find in Indiana. It's tough, big woods hunting but the deer are there.
There are basically 3 sections. Near the Knob Lake campground, most of which is unhuntable. Along Skyline Drive which is some great, but steep stuff. There are a couple nice trails into it that you can bail off into hollows. And the area around Starve Hollow Lake.
Spend some time cyber scouting and you'll find some nice opportunities.
There is also the Hoosier NF south and east of Monroe Res. It's about 30 minutes of driving to the southeast corner and that is pretty chopped up. Get a good map and study the boundaries. Don't plan on driving there for the first time in the dark.
I drove to the Hickory Ridge Horse Camp. It is pretty nice and might be a good alternative for future activities. It's not as big as the Knob Lake campground though.
There is also the Deem Wilderness south of Monroe R. It's about an hour's drive. I would love to do a canoe hunt along the southern side of Monroe sometime.
That's it for now.
Thanks for the update!
I have been doing some Cyber Scouting... sounds like I might have to rethink my plan, I was hoping to just make a long hike right out of camp to do my hunting... how far out of camp do you have to get to hunt?
Do you know if I can call the State forest and get a map showing the boundaries and such?
Kevin.
The SF boundaries are marked on the topos on Terraserver. I printed the Google Earth aerials and then marked the boundaries using the Terraserver topos.
I'll email the forest manager about the Safety Zone boundaries around the campground.
I got some good info from the forest manager:
QuoteMr. Scifres,
Typically our camp sites do not fill up during deer season. We will have some campers due to the fall season and good weather, but not to the point of filling up.
Hunting is allowed outside the safety zone that is designated around the office and camping sites.
Hunters may walk through the safety zone but must have their firearm discharged at all times within the safety zone.
The distance varies from site to site but the majority of the camp sites aren't much farther than 1/8 of a mile from the safety zone boundary.
As for the timber sale near the fire tower. That area (timber sale boundary only) will be closed to public access while they are working the job. We anticipate that operation beginning in the next few weeks.
No other timber sales are scheduled for that area or around the camp grounds at this time that would impact you hunting activities this season.
Knob Lake, which has camp sites adjacent to and nearby will be under repair and empty by deer season. The lake is receiving a new emergency spillway which requires the lake to be empty. The intial phases of this project begin this week.
Camping will continue, but lake access will be resticted due to construction and low water levels.
These are all managment actions that are temporary in nature to ensure sustained use of these public lands for future generations.

Subject: Hunting Near Knob Lake
Hello,
I am planning on doing a hunt down there in late October and have a couple questions. I hope you can help me with them.
Can you tell me if hunting is allowed anywhere around the Knob Lake Campground? I saw a safety zone sign on the way in but how far out from the camp does that extend?
Does the campground fill up during deer firearms season?
What is the plan for the logging in the section near the fire tower? Will that area be closed? What are the boundaries of the cut? Are there other cuts in the area?
Thank for the update again! I have a few spots in mind... guess I better have more than one option!
Pretty much any time you are hunting around here on public land, you better have a couple tricks up your sleeve. It helps to think of it as a deer drive :) Pressure shouldn't really be that bad though.
I just got the word from the DNR Captain in the Indy central office that this new stuff called covert orange is legal for firearms season in Indiana. I have a topic about it on pow-wow but I wanted to make sure some of the Indiana guys know about it. I ordered some yesterday for me and my kids and it should be here by Tues. or Wed. so we can use it this weekend for the youth deer season. We plan to go to Scott Co. to hunt. I don't know how they know this, but they say that deer see normal hunter's orange as bright yellow. I thought deer spooked mostly to the solidness of the orange. This covert orange looks grey to the deer. I feel that atleast a hat in this stuff will add an element of saftey especially while hunting on public land even in bow season. ;)
Hey fellas I wanted to bring this back up as its getting close to the time.
I also wanted to throw out the idea of a trade blanket type deal. Since theres gonna be a buncha like minded archery type folks there I think it'd be a prime time to get rid of those items we either don't use any more or just have too much of. I plan on bringing some whitewood staves down for tradin' maybe some other odds and ends. I dunno what all's floating around that might end up in the truck.
Just thought I'd see if anybody else might be interested. Might bring more folks down if they thought there was a good deal to be had.
Chris
guys there are some good hunting spots just north of freetown . "public hunting" be glad to show a few some spots. i may even take someone on my land for a day or two
TTT
you guys turn the heat down at home yet??
c'mon 24th....
Unfortunately I am not going to be making it to this hunt anymore. The funds have gotten a little tight around the home here and I can't really spring for the $150 tag and gas there and back.
I apologize to all who wanted to see the LDB... I will be sure to get some hunting in around here with her and hopefully have some great stories to share. Maybe next year will work for me, I really wish I could get there and share a camp with you guys.
I hope you all have an incredible time and hope to see a bunch of pictures and stories from the trip.
Kevin.
