I know Howards time was a bit before Freds, but did they ever have a chance to hunt/shoot together?
Howard was born 3 years before Fred.
:knothead:
Silly me I need to read up on my history. I read (hope it's accurate) that Howard died in 75' so I thought he was quite a bit older than Fred
I have heard they were not friendly, to each other. several accounts have been written to that effect.

At least one account exists of a hunt in which they both participated... I believe it would have been the Govenor's One Shot Antelope Hunt near Douglas Wyoming.
Charlie is correct. They both participated in the One Shot Antelope Hunt. Howard was already a known entity before Fred became a household name. I never heard of any animosity between them.
The One Shot hunt would have been in Lander Years 57-59 I think.
:scared: :readit:
Boy there is no shortage of good info in here! Thanks much I was curious about that subject and I didn't know if they'd done such a thing.
On a side note....Howard Hill and Ben Pearson may have....they were friends. Seems like everyone forgets about ole Ben Pearson. He doesn't seem to get the notoriety that Howard Hill and Fred Bear often receive.

On the antelope hunt it is purported that Howard drove up to Fred's blind after killing his Antelope to show him off and messed up Fred who had waited patiently for two lopes to line up so he could try and kill two with one shot, Fred was not a happy camper.
Ben Pearson and Howard hunted many times together. Other than being on the lope hunt, Fred and Howard never hunted together.

Don't hold me to this, but this came from a bowhunter that is very well known within the traditional bowhunting community. I use to wonder myself why Fred Bear and Howard Hill did not do a lot together. You never see anything in their books or writings where they made mention of one another. But the story is that Fred and howard where at some gathering, and Fred being the jokester that he was made an off color joke in front of Howard and Mrs. Hill, and Howard being the southern gentleman that he was did not take to kindly to the joke being made in front of the women and according to the story, Howard grabbed Fred and shook him back and forth just like a rag doll, with ole Fred's head snapping back an forth. So if this is really true, may thats why they really never got together. Just passing on what I heard.
