Title: Removing weight from a longbow????
Post by: CJ Pearson on July 01, 2007, 10:43:00 PM
Has anyone reduced the weight of a longbow? I have been sanding on the belly of a longbow that I have that is 64 lbs @ 28. I want to get it to somewhere between 55-60lbs. Does anyone have any tips on doing this? Also does the back need to be sanded ? Thanks ahead for the tips.

Is it a fiberglass bow. If so I think you'll have to take weight off by removing material from the sides of the limbs. If its a selfbow then just sand the belly.

I figured someone who knew more than me would have chimed in by now.

I wouldn't sand off much from the sides if at all.  The bowyer knows how wide he wanted the limbs.  Sand the fiberglass on the back and belly.  If the corners of the limbs aren't rounded off much then round them over good.  You'll lose a few pounds just by rounding the edges.  Chad
