As posted earlier, I am getting back after a 5-6 yr layoff...
I dug out my old box of arrows... why I kept some of the junk in there is beyond me.. but I did find a bunch of ash and cedars that I never got around to making as well as some aluminums, so life is good...
HOWEVER, I did find 6 arrows that I modified about 8 yrs ago to see if this would work and it did... all the arrows show signs of being heavily used and none of the tips have split...
For some reason (alcohol/drugs/insanity/cabin fever/what ever :eek: ) I decided to see if I could put an insert from aluminum arrow into one of my 23/64" cedars... I made a jig for my wood lathe so they would be accurately center drilled and probably used 1716 or smaller inserts.
I epoxied the inserts in place and screwed on a field point....
As I recall after finding these.. they worked like a dream... I am going to have to refletch these and see if I remember correctly...

You might want to wrap the end of those shafts with a bit of thread. I would think that taking that much wood out of the tip would make them a bit weak. They look cool though, let us know how they work out.

Those shafts were done about 8 yrs ago and shot into every type of target I could find... did a fair amount of 3D shooting with them.. not a one shows any sign of damage to the ends. As I mentioned these were in a my arrow box that I have not opened in about 5 yrs... so they were well tested when I did them...

Not bad, but how about using a larger field point. Don't know if they even make them, but a 23/64th field point would reduce the impact on the end of the shaft and probably decrease the chance of breakage.

Hey Griz, I've thinking of drilling the end of a shaft and inserting lead shot to add to the FOC. With what you did, this seems even better than feasible! And Tom, this would be entirely traditional (as least for shotgunners!).

You could always taper the end of the shaft to match the feild point.

Since epoxy is much, MUCH stronger than any wood out there, I would think these ought to hold up very well.
