Title: Moonlight hunting
Post by: NorthShoreLB on June 26, 2007, 03:37:00 PM
Getting ready to do some full moon hunting on thursday.

In the mean time we went out last night, the moon was bright enougth, I had pigs all around me at a watering hole, unfortunatly the cliff was shadowing it so I couldn't see them, I tryed to turn on my red LED headlamp to take a shot, but they spooked immediatly, this was the first time I tryed it, I      thought critters couldn't see the red one       , after we still hunter the riverbed, herd them but couln't get them in the moonlight, hopefully the moon will track a bit more north on thursday,...it should be fun   :bigsmyl:

A pig will generally not stand still for a head lamp. You can light them up for a split second and then they're leaving. A headlamp is too constant of a light sorce. You want to come to full draw, hit the light, and drop the string. The way the light was last night you shouldn't have even needed the light. Shoot for the bottom line of the hog. It's my experience that most every night shot will be high so adjust before you drop the string. Also, the full moon is sometime too much light. You want to blend with the shadows and not look like you are standing in the spotlight. Just some things I've picked up along the way. Good luck on the hunt. I might go out myself for a couple of nights. CK

oh btw, the blue light works better than red for short range encounters. If you are spotlighting at a distance use red. CK

We use a red Hawglite alot here in East Texas. The light doesn't scare them if you hold it still. If it wiggles around their shadow scares them.

HO yeah Curtis, plenty light last nite, but we set up at the bottom of a cliff, and the moon was tracking to far south casting a shadow all the way to the far bank,.....I had a blast and learned a lot last nite, ...... I'll have a much better set up in a couple of days   :bigsmyl:   . I was off , but not by much.
