My 13 year old wants to come with. I started rummaging through all my bows, I have 2 fiberglass recurves and an oak self bow. I have had him shot a variety of arrows (both wood and alum) and every shot is tail high. (way high) I have moved the nocking point up and down (to extremes) and still a tail high shot. It has to be a fletching clearance issue but these are all "Shot off the shelf" bows. the Easton tuning guide deals with plungers so I can't do much about the clearance issue. Any help for a newbie who is making his first trip to Compton?? My son has only shot perhaps 100 arrows in his whole life but want to came and shoot. I hate for him to be turned off of archery because of this.
does he pull back further than what is recomended on the little fiberglass bows? how is his release is he trying to push the arrow forward (I have had the same problem because of that) when he is releasing..
and what poundage and and arrows is he shooting?
I have watched his form and it looks ok but I will watch for what you mention.
I know if I have arrows that are way too stiff they'll do that or if there is too much weight up front.
Like Rob said, what weight bow is he using, his draw length, and the arrows your trying to use? Hopefully we can get ya on track before the big day :thumbsup:
It will be tough tuning a bow for a novice shooter. As there is no consistency. I would not worry to much about him being turned off by his shooting. We all started somewhere and it still is not perfect for most of us. HE WILL HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME AT COMPTONS. Trust me on this one. Just getting to go with dad and I assume camping. It will be a weekend him will never forget. Maybe he can help me find some of my arrows on the course!

Just so ya know I'm bring my 5 year old grandson, and I have no douth he will have a grand time shooting. All it takes is a little encouragement. And watch them sprout! Into a :archer:
Oh yes, we are camping in a 14 foot wide Tipi.
The first year I went to Comptons we followed a young boy and his father around. The lad probably didn't hit 1 out of every five targets, but he was having the time of his life - laughing and thoroughly enjoying himself. Just encourage your son to have fun and not worry about arrow flight and that's exactly what he will do. See you there!
Another thing is when he shoots make sure he is close enough to the traget that he won't miss. I know this is what I have stressed to my kids and grandkids from 2 years old until this very day. Matter of fact the 3 oldest grand kids are preaching it to their new friends. They always tell them "Bowhunting is not about how far away you can shoot and animal, but how close you can get.
This keeps them encouraged and lets face it nobody at any age wants to miss all the time, so keep em close and arrow flight means nothing.
I agree with the rest of the guys, just being thier with dad is victory already.
