Title: 2nd Adirondack Attack, couple new ideas and open to suggestions!
Post by: adkmountainken on June 10, 2007, 08:20:00 PM
i am planning on having the 2nd annual Adirondack Attack the first weekend of October for early archery season. i have the whole week off so you can stay for the weekend or all week. i will be staying at my mothers near where i hunt and there is room for many to stay. i was thinking about a semi work shop if there is enough response and interest. possibly someone to teach bow building, flint knapping, and things of that nature. very open to suggestions. had a blast last year and learned a few things to do different. i will be scouting earlier and exploring more land to space out the stands far enough apart where everyone can enjoy a little alone time. hope to have a small 3d course. would love to have the same crew as last year as well as any new people that would like a chance to roam the mountains with us. all you need is a NY license, i will provide the rest.
the only problem is i might be biting off more than i can chew by trying to have a workshop and hunt both Saterday and Sunday. if people were staying for more than the weekend it could possible. what do ya think? this is just the very begining to see where we stand for this hunt. any input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
 Ken

Ken , Sounds great , I think some mid day workshop could be done . I wish I knew enough about bow building to help with it , but not having built one that didn't break I can't offer much. I will try very hard to make it as I am leaving for Montana the next week on thursday so I will have lots to do. I had a great time last year and anyone who is interested you will have a great time with some great people:0) Thanks again Drew

i will keep everyone posted as things get closer and i get more info of how long people can stay to see if a workshop will be able to happen. my mothers house will basicly be our camp and her addy is
141 church rd
johnstown ny 12095
you can use that addy to map quest and get an idea of how long your trip will be. i would also like to get maybe one early aftrennon of flyfishing in as well. there are couple nice trout streams here.  turkey, bear, deer and small game will be open at this time.

I moved back to Mass. a few years ago for school but I still hunt the hudson valley at least 7 or 8 weekends per season.   If you don't mind a trad newbie I'd be real interested.  Let me know what you need and I'll see what I can do.

Take care,

Dean,
Broadalbin is only about 30 minutes away from where we will be hunting. it is manly public land bordered by some posted land which i have permission to hunt. if you can come up to hunt bring a gps and i'll show you some great spots to put stands so you can come up and hunt by yourself throughout the year, i don't mind sharing its a big mountain with many ridges. it does not get hunted AT ALL during archery season. gets some pressure during muzzleloader and then POUNDED during rifle season. when rifle opens i move to another area. i have a good 4 or 5 spots that are public land i can hook you up with which would only be a 20-30 minute drive from your camp. the mountain we hunt is full of oaks and beeches. there are a few swamps waaaaay on top.

Best part about the hunt is that you will probably never meet a finer host than Ken.

    :campfire:  Last year was one of the finest weekends hunting in a long time.

Ken maybe the waitress from the Italian place we ate at in Johnstown could do a seminar on "catching" deer.  ;)

Ken
Ill have to try and make it. If you guys run short on space I can set my camper up at the camp and someone can stay there. Do your area fall in the northern or southern tier? If you come up north I can find a ridge for you to sit also. Not as many deer but sometimes you see a big one.

Dean,
as Chuck said Route 29 is the north/south border. i rarely hunted south untill i moved to Fona last year where i have permission to hunt a small piece of land by my house. i am a northern, big woods hunter through and through.  the area i hunt holds a good population of deer although ya don't see them every time as you know. there are some real slammers here as i took a B&C buck ( 171 1/8 ) in 1985. also took a HUGE 8 point 3 years ago. you don't see as many as hunting south but i love the mountains and the chance of seeing a real slammer and a good supply of bear. just something about hunting those ridges and listing to the coyotes and turkeys, brings me back to a time long ago. i am not in it for the kill although i love venison, these mountains and strems run through my blood, without them i would be lost.

i have room or will find room for anyone who would like to come. i am trying to plan on doing a few more things this year as last year i had not put a lot of planning together before season arrived. this whole event is auctualy just a good way for like minded people to get together and enjoy a good time of hunting and friendship. it is not ment to be hard core hunting and first light to last light in the stand. however there is a good population of deer, bear and small game and i will do my best to put everyone in position to see game, the rest is up to you! i would like to do a little pushing if the deer are not moving and would like to cover a little more area with stands. i look forward to sharing stories and learning all i can from the different hunters and hunting styles. i just don't want anyone who comes to be let down by not seeing deer or upset about not taking a trophy as this is not what its all about. i am no guide nor is the land trophy caliber ( though they are there ), i am just a red neck who loves to hunt these beautiful mountains and enjoys sharing the hunt with good friends. its about getting back to the beauty of nature and sharing with others.

What does it cost for a non-resident?

Ken had said that he would like to try and do some "pushes" to get game up and moving.

Being as I have a "bad back" and can't sit very long,(plus,I'm just a natural born "wanderer" and prefer to "still-hunt") I would be more than happy to "still-hunt" around while others sit.

I was just "wondering" how many other "wanderers" are planing on coming?????

Well my friends.....I'm READY!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday my good friend Joe Skipp hand delivered my cedar arrows that I won in the St.Judes auction. White crown dipped with 2 orange hen feathers and a black cock feather and a orange nock. They are BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Joe's craftsmanship is OUTSTANDING!!!!!

I tossed around what I was going to do with these arrows. They are VERY special to me,as Joe is no longer making custom cedar arrows for sale anymore, and these are his last dozen. Then I had an idea.....

2 years ago at the Joan Leonard Memorial Bunny Hunt,I won a 1967 Bear Grizzly (47# @ 28") in the St.Judes raffle. This bow is "officialy" 40 years old this year and I decided it would be my designated "hunting bow" for this year.

Today I got to thinking.....St.Judes bow.....St.Judes arrows.....There's got to be some "MOJO" goin' on there!!!!!

I set down today and tipped 6 of my St.Judes arrows with 125gr. steel blunts for stumpin' and those elusive Black Squirrels. The other 6 I tipped with brand new, green Bear Razorheads, that belonged to my good friend Lou,who "made the journey" last fall.

I'm gonna stuff'em in my backquiver, grab my Old Grizzly, and head for the Adirondacks!!!!!    :archer:

I have heard of that Chuck...I have been doing some research pertaining to thinning out the local population of garbage raiders, bird feeder maulers....
The stuff I read suggested a fawn bleat as the most productive, but I think it was targeted more towards a spring hunt.
Hey either way someone may get a shot at a yote or something.
Man you guys are gonna have fun....

Man you guys are making me homesick!! I lived in New Paltz for 11 years and mostly only come back for hunting weekends during the season.  Thinking about hunting over on Lundy's and fishing the Rondout Res. gets me a little misty. I really miss the heck out of that whole area.

Seeing you are from Dutchess (Woodchucker), really gets me going as I'm priveleged enough to hunt a huge slice of heaven over in Rhinecliff.  Man is that place amazing!!

Thanks for getting my blood going. Memories of that area are what carry me through the whole rest of the year. Take care

You see my friend.....First babies are ALLWAYS late.....

Labor ALLWAYS takes a LOOOOONG time.....

Johnstown is ONLY about an hour away from Coxsackie.....

We DO get good cell phone service on the mountain.....

Now let's do a "drill".....   :bigsmyl:

Expectant "Dad" Jamie comes up to the mountains to hunt because "new babies are "ALLWAYS" late. The "New Baby" decides to come early because it doesn't know "the rules" and it REALLY doesn't "care" that "Dad" is on a hunting trip. "Mom" calls "Dad" on the cell phone and tells him that the "New Baby" is coming early, and she is on her way to the hospital. "Dad" assures "Mom" that he is "on his way" and will be there in time for the  "little ones" arrival. "Dad" hot-foots down the mountain with the entire "Adirondack Attack" crew in tow,(after all, there was nothing THIS exciting going on up on that mountain anyway LOL). The entire crew takes off for the hospital in a "TradGang Convoy" and arrives in plenty of time for "Dad" to get out of his hunting clothes and into his "birthday suit" and join "Mom" in the delivery room. Meanwhile.....The Adirondack Attack crew is pacing back and forth in the "waiting room" leaving a "multitude" of muddy boot prints on the floor. Finaly the "New Baby" arrives!!!!! The TradGangers CHEER!!!!! and all of the "Gang" agrees that it is the GREATEST TROPHY of the season. In true Native American Tradition the "New Baby" and "Mom" are showered with gifts, and the "New Baby" is given an "Indian" name.....like....."Precious Little One,With Bad Timing"

Well Jamie, Do you think she'll go for it?????

I was "surfing the net" LOL the other day looking under "Adirondack Mountains".

I found an ad for an "Adirondack Sport Shop".....selling "Adirondack Scents and lures".....

They had an "Adirondack Bear Lure".....

I wonder if it works as good as "Woodchucker's Liquid Bear Bait"?????

on the license application it asks (in red) to pic what deer management permits I want to apply for for free, only 2 DMPs can be picked.  which ones should I put down if at all?

I'm getting the super sportsman license it seems to be the best deal.

and this application has to be mailed to Verizon in Phoenix, Az with credit card only?

Post by: woodchucker on July 24, 2007, 04:04:00 PM
Ted,

The WMU we will be hunting in is 5J and there are no Deer Managment Permits issued for that area,so I would not worry about it.

The tags you will get with your Super Sportsman license are good state-wide. So if you get a chance to come back and hunt again,it won't matter what area you are hunting, your tags will be valid.

Ted,
where we hunt the dividing line between North and South zone is state Route 29 which happens to run exactly by where we are which means one side of the road is north ( 5J wmu ) and one side is South ( 6r wmu ), you can auctually throw a rock from north to south! put in 6R for you doe application and i can hook you up with a great public southern area. also if you wanted to you could just buy a license over the counter friday night when you get here at Wallmart. send me a pm with your phone # and i'll give you a call. i look foward to hunting with you.

Ken...if Huntrdfk (Dave) shows up, please DO NOT hold any raffles. For some strange reason, every year at the JLMB (Shawns Bunny Hunt), Dave and Woodchucker seem to score on everything good...
Not only that...does it seem strange that 2 yrs in a row...Dave DRAWS CHUCKS NAME FOR THE MOOSE HUNT!!!  I hope to make it up with Woodchucker...

Dave...if you come, can't wait to sneak around the big woods with ya...should be fun. We'll leave Chuck sitting next to a stump waiting for a black bear to come into his Secret Liquid Bear lure....

Do you need climbers or hang-on's?

I have a few hang on's laying around collecting dust.  I don't think I have enough steps for them all though.

Drop me a line and we'll hook up soon.  I'll be available after labor day.  I want to stick around home until after my daughter leaves for college.
