OK, I'm looking for a new hat. I want something with a bit of a brim, but it can't interfere with my draw. I've tried several in the past, but if my string touches the brim it completely throws me off and I shoot worse than normal. And yes I already cant to about 10 o'clock.
What do you guys (and gals) suggest.
Dew Rag!
i Like the old VINTAGE "Jones Style Hat" , short brim, they are some great old hats :wavey:
I have a pink hat with turkey feathers and other cool stuff on it. Bet ya can even find a picture of it on this site. Wanna give me $100 for it? It should look good on you! ... ...
... mike ...
Welder's hat and wash it every time you wash something else. Hat will be very soft and will fit in your pocket easy.
Brent
Short Brim Stormy Kromer
Tilley! The brim is flexible enough to move with the string...at least mine is!

crusher hat-look at gray wolf or day one camo. Day one has nice ones in wool in asat. I basically wear the crusher if the sun is out or sometimes a bandana. When it's cold I either wear a very thin skull cap with the crusher over it or a ski type fleece hat.

Check noggintops.com like hunter john stated. I have a wool felt "Lite Felt" packable similar in style of the one that Fred Bear wore. I think the brand is Broner.I like it a lot.
I don't think I could hunt without my Filson Packer. I have the Shelter Cloth version. Short brim, cool in the summer, warm in the winter, fears no weather.
There are fedoras with short brims. Noggin Tops has a few.
The crushers from gray wolf and day one also get a nod from me.
I wear a banadana usually in the warm weather. A friend of mine did something recently that I thought was cool. He took a boonie cap and just used scissors to cut the brim down to about 1 1/2 inches. He is like you in that he can't stand his string bumping his hat.
I use a couple of boonie hats. One with gortex for cool weather and one perforated for warm weather.
The short brim will keep the light out of your eyes and not interfere with the string at full draw.

what the heck is a tilley? Must be a west coast thing. :)
Thanks for the suggestions folks, kep them coming.
Curious about the tilley, too.Never heard of one on the middle coast, either!
Tilley--guaranteed forever--if your grandchildren wear it out, it'll be replaced.
Give crushers a serious look, they are wool, cheap and tough.
Reg - wher do I find this "tilley"?
BTW what is a tilley?
I just were a regular ball cape and turn it around backwards. how about some pics of a tilley......stabow
tilley.com
I should of thought of them as I have one of there hats, mine is white so I never thought of it as a hunting hat. They do make them in few differn't colors now and they are tough as nails.

Gotta go with noggintops.com
Hunter John - AHHHH, so it's a north coast thing. :)
Must be cause they are pretty popular here,I checked their website and they have good colors and styles well suited to hunting.
You mite wont to check out Akubra hats I wear the one called the Drover its note made any Moore but they have a large Sell.
Charlie Brown.
These are in the sponsor list, i saw one at the bunny hunt I'm going to give one a try. Bomber hats (http://www.graywolfwoolens.com/store/search.php?mode=search)
I have a LL Bean Wool "bucket type" hat i wear when it get's cold......it's a dark Loden Green Color ( and has a short brim)
I'm usually hunting in colder weather so use stocking caps alot. Also, if you can find one, a Fratzke knit hat is just the ticket. Kind of like a bucket, but can turn up the cap around the ears which forms a small, inch or so bill, in the front. Just enough to shade my eye glasses, but not enough to bother a string. Not made anymore, but sometimes find them on *****.
That tilly looks just like the light green hat I purchased at Wally World a few weeks back for $7.00. It wasn't for my bow shooting but to keep my chrome dome from burning so much. Once I started wearing it I realized the brim was short and flexible enough to shoot with. Works very well.
Nobody has done a camo top hat yet. Be the first! Stores nice and flat!
Tom,that sounds downright LaClair-ish.No offense,Ron! ;)
I love the Gray Wolf hats. Crusher in wolfskin for normal use, and a wool bomber when it gets cold.
I still got my old NAM boonie hat..works great for me
I have a kromer look alike that the store couldn't sell - the lady at the cash register said " your really not into fashion - are you?" and the comment keep on coming. But despite public wearing and the ridicule; the hat works the best for me; as I too tend to hit hat brims with the way I anchor. Mine has a bright orange inside; which makes it easier to find if I drop it. I think I have 20 or 30 hats out there of various types that I lost while hunting. :(
I LIKE THE JONES STYLE HAT.LOL! JONESY
Dreadlocks for me, natural ghullie(sp) top built right in! ;.)

Any hat shop can trim the brim to whatever width you would like it.
If you already have a hat the you like, and some of them are expensive, but the brim is too wide and hits your string, just bring it into a shop and for a few bucks they'll trim it and/or reshape it however you want.
I don't suppose there are quite as many western shops that sell cowboy hats in NY as there are out here, but you shouldn't have to much trouble finding one.
How bout this

:D
I like the military style boonie hat. The brim is really soft and flexible so it doesn't interfere even in the off chance that it does touch my string and it still keeps the sun off me more than a baseball cap.
Greg
so many hats and only one noggin to wear them on. Tom is this the hat you were looking for :biglaugh:

A boonie (wool or cotton), like longstick recommended, does work well. I really like to wear a baseball style hat, but am very happy hunting with a boonie. Gives you a short bill (but a bill nonetheless), is collapsable, and will NOT hit your string when you draw. Might be worth a shot. Good luck.
in cold weather I got a wool hat like radar wore on mash there cheap has a small soft brim and can be pulled down over the ears if your cold
Rhe "radar" style caps are awesome for cold weather. I am going to look for a boonie hat in ASAT. If not, one of those Tilley hats look good too.
Dan
go to Cabela's and look up 'boonie'. They have one with a built in facemask. It's what I hunt with in the early NC season.
Juan...you goof!! Gotta admit, La Fuente kept me gawkin' for a while. :clapper:
Killdeer :coffee:
I like my boonies as well, been wear'n them since the 70's. New military boonies sell for around 12.00 and you can get them in an array of como and solid colors. There light and they wear long. I just don't think you can beat'em.
Jerald
Here's a good bowhunting hat, nice short brim that won't get in the way of the bowstring....no that's not me without my beard.. :biglaugh:

I wear a greek fishing cap made of wool while hunting in the rain. keeps your noggin warm, short bill, and it stays put in the wind....kind of a nautical look to it too. goes great with a beard.....i've worn those hats for work and hunting for years before the wear out...
no wonder the boys call me "Captain Kirk"
