Title: Thoughts on St. Judes Auction
Post by: BobW on May 31, 2007, 02:39:00 PM
In reading a reply to a post I made recently, I noticed our "membership" is somewhere over 12,000.  Do you realize if each of us would give a single dollar what we could put together?

Just thinking out loud.  Most of the time that is dangerous.....

Bob

Yet another example of Mickey's unerring accuracy! This is why I trust his proclamations and judgements wholeheartedly, and would follow him blindfolded through downtown Baghdad, The Valley Of Death, or an underground shopping mall parking lot(z). The man is uncanny!

BUT, Killie - can he add that (or a reasonable portion thereof) to what we are tallying from those bidding on items? AND show folks what could then be accomplished  - with the two figures - you know - Projected bids tally, plus reasonable, desireable expectations of 1.00 cash donations to equal a possible accomplishment? Aw, there would be the real test for our lovable Resident Wizard.  ;)

And though we jest, it is a point well made and one we often broach - but it is so hard to reach all the people and then to make even a good (reasonable) membership percentage realize, believe, and actually take action. It is a sad fact of fund raising - even for a cause as worthy as St. Judes Hospital for Children. What is that cost per child/per day for St. Judes to operate and save our Children, again? You know, the one that Marlo Thomas mentions on TV? It's staggering, but we can help! Yes, even with $1.00 (one, little dollar).

God bless the Children, God bless the saviours, Bless you all, bless us all.

Can't add much to what Bob and Bernie said. Even if all the winning bidders just included one extra dollar with their payment?? I'll let Mickey do the math.

Holy crap Tique, Bob posted a simple math question that i could handle and now you want to go and complicate it.

Hey I agree it would be nice if everyone would donate, but that's not going to happen. Guess I'll just have to make up for the few that won't with mine and my wife's bids, but from the looks of things (ie: I keep getting outbid by some guys with some SERIOUS pocket change) I'm just going to have to make a cash donation. And I encourage everyone else to do the same.   :bigsmyl:

I'm beginning to think I'm poor after going through the St. Judes Auction

Hi Mick,
Think if I donated this somebody would bid on it?

Of course they would get the clean one from the rear bumper, this one is reserved.

Mickey, Sorry about the math problem, we'll leave that up to Bernie and Bob.
I get outbid before I even get to bid. I guess it's not exactly a donation but I just bought a $50 cookie; probably the only item I will get but no complaints; I'm having fun!

Jerry, I know how you feel.

Heck, Jerry that is what I thought the first year.  Then I realized:  1.  OK, I am  poor, but there is a ten dollar item that I can bid $20 on that will benefit the cause.  2.  Some people actually save money in anticipation of giving to a good cause.  That whole saving money thing is a little hazy to me, but I admire the dedication.  3.  The St Jude's auction is about raising money for kids.  If I get outbid by someone with deeper pockets, that is just more money for the kids.  4.  It is not about what I can get, but what I can give.  $10 or $10,000 everyone gives what they can.

I have had a blast, been glued to the puter since all the items started coming in.

So much fun in fact I forgot what it was all about till someone mention their son was at St. Judes. This is an awesome event.

Check the original question.  The answer is OVER $12,000!

See you in MO!  Less than two months and counting.

Yep.....I'd bid on it....

AND, if anyone thinks that 'little things don't matter'....at up 100 little things at an average of $20!!!!!!

That's about how many 'little things' we've got, now just think about doubling that next year.

I was wondering the other night and was thinking about posting a question of how many donate to St Judes besides waiting for this auction. My nice spent a large portion of her childhood at St. Judes. If it wasn't for that place she might not be here with us today. My wife and I donate twice a year to St. Judes and encourage everyone who can to donate whatever they can throughout the year. Any and all amounts can and does make a difference!!

Walt you put that thing on the auction and I'll open at $25.  It won't last at that number, but I promisse that's where it will start!

D'oh you're right Dingus!  :knothead:

Terry you'd have to out bid me on it. I collect plates like that.

here's my thought. I didn't go to a NWTF banquit this year, nor did  I do the DU, QDMA, RMEF, FF, QF, TU or any other fund raisers. The reasons are simple.

1 - I support those organizations thru my memberships.
2 - frankly, the overhead for those events are rediculous and I often wonder where my donations are going.
3 - I have no more room on my walls or tables for anymore prints or sculpturs.

The St. Judes auction has become my charity of choice because there are so many unique items that are given from peoples hearts for the direct benifit of sick kids. besides, where else can I get a quart of bear lard, an empty coke bottle, a membership to a super secret club and a $50 cookie ? I have had more fun reading the posts for St. Judes than I've ever had at one of those dinners, and it's only going to get better as the weekend progresses.  :)

Did you get in yet?

Guys and gals don't forget to look back past page 1. Lots of real affordable items back there yet and every dollar counts!

I love it and all the participators - and the "readers" who just might be participators next year, or the next. I have two neighbors who also donate to St. Judes (when they can) during the year, bless their hearts. It is just one of the grandest of grand good causes - IMO. I love to be able to help the little bit that I can, and I honor all who do, in whatever way that they can. Like bbassi said - no matter how much or how little - it's all from good hearts that do as they can see fit to, and that's what makes it so great (and so much fun -    :D   )

All the above comments are right on the money. last year was my first year here, and for me it was about what can I get. This year it's about what can I give. It is much, much more fun this year.

I explained to my wife and kids what it's all about, they're blown away by the amount of $ that's being raised. My 9yr old daughter said" Fifty dollar cookies, are they crazy?" I told her they're crazy about helping kids. I think next year she'll be donating cookies.

Id go $30 on the plate if the bug guts are included.I found some affordable things and they would most likely stay that way if David wouldn't keep bumping them back up.LOL
seriously though if I get outbid I don't think I am losing but rather the kids are winning, and that makes this Canuck happy.

Believe me....no one is more amazed at the $50 cookie than I am! I was just on the phone with my mother and told her what you guys were doing. She couldn't believe it either. She said "nobody pays $50 for a cookie!" Well, Tradgangers do! I need to call her back and tell her about the bear lard and empty coke bottle. That will really get her!
Great job to all who are participating through large bids or small. It all adds up to bless the kids.
I love to hear those who are out bid to say they will send in a cash donation anyway. Simply awesome!
4runr you are right, it's not really about what you get...although that is fun too...it's more about the fun and joking around that comes from good hearted people having a great time. I know that I am jumping on the laptop any chance I get to hit the refresh button and try to keep up! Sure am going to miss it when it's over...  :campfire:

We always do, Miss Kim (miss it, that is).

Bless your heart 4Runr - I hope it doesn't turn her neck green or anything, it isn't much, I fear. Kinda nice to have though, I think.
