Hi everyone, I have been shooting my new toy seriously for about a week now and have a question about my penetration. My bow is 45lb@28", I draw 28.5". I'm shooting 35-55 goldtip xt hunters that are 30.5" from tip of insert to tip of nock, I have 100gr brass inserts installed and shoot 150gr heads which brings my total arrow weight to around 500gr. I've been shooting my new block target at 15 yards and getting 7inches of penetration with a practice tip. I'm shooting off the shelf and still getting some up and down movement of my arrows which I think that I need to adjust my nock on the string to correct. My question is: Is that decent penetration? I will soon be shooting 150 razorcaps for practice and hunting. Any suggestions?
Plenty for deer sized animals.
Your good, Adjust your nock.
Sounds like your going to put a lot of meat in the cooler
Sounds fine to me, once you get your nock height adjusted.
My uncle killed a doe back in the sixties with a 35 pound bow. Bows have gotten better since then but the deer haven't gotten any tougher.
Fire up the grill, you're good to go. Hap
Get that arrow flying straight ASAP. I use very sharp two blade heads and get pass thru's on deer. You should expect the same but get that arrow flying/hitting straight.

3 blades and "light" bows haven't worked for me (no exit holes from tree stands). If you're hunting from the ground I'd say your fine ... if you're hunting from a tree stand I'd go with a 2 blade.
Get your arrow flight straightened out and go get them.No worrys.
My wife shoots 500 grain multiblade arrows from her bow at 43# and at 46# and she has shot thru both sides of an adult black bear and a forkhorn buck....he only kills with her equipment. However, if you are getting up and down arrow flight I am quite certain that will have a negative effect on penetration. You need to fix that.
shew, i was afraid to read this one after seeing the xxx topic. if you can hit where you are supposed to should go through em like a hot knife through butter.
45# bow and 500 grains is good numbers for hunting deer like Al said. 7 inches of penetration on foam is overkill. As long as it don't bounce out you are good to go for 3-D :) ...Van
I shoot a 46# longbow with 35/55 GT's and Snuffer heads. Most of my hunting is from treestands and this combination works GREAT. LOT'S of blood and VERY large holes. IMO you're good to go RodL.

Thanks everyone! Sounds like all I have to do is adjust the nock point on the string and should be good to go. At the present time I'm only going to be hunting whitetails and smaller animals. Thanks again for the vote of confidence on my equipment.
