i just bought some 4" feathers for my son's arrows. was thinking of tring to 4 fletch for my arrows. do you uses 4" or 5" feathers. thanks b-dog
5.5
I use 4 4-inch feathers on all my arrows, I get much better flight than with 3 5-inch or 3 5.5-inch feathers. I fletch 60x120 with the 4 shield cut feathers and rotate the nock so there is no feather contact with the shelf. The method is fully explained on Foxfire's website. They are listed on the Sponsers sheet.
I use 4 4" on mine. I like it because you can get 2 feathers out of a full lenght.
Imho if you are gonna go to 4 fletch anything more than 4 inch feathers is just overkill. Good luck with your experiment, I really like 4 fletch, ever since switching I have not had any problems with broadhead flight.
I'm another that has recently switched to four 4" feathers and really like the results. I still have quite an inventory of 5" to work through, so will still use some of those, but my hunting arrows will be 4x4 from now on.
I too have recently switched to 4x4's and like Whip said, I have a pile of 3x5's to work through but my hunting set up has been switched to the 4x4's!
The smaller feather you use, the more defects you will find in your realease, or should i say you will find them if you have them (bad release) I use big feathers because i have a tendency to pluck string (bad release) large feathers help COVER up a bad release.Jonesy
Might seem like the odd duck here, but I really like 4 5-inch feathers. Added stability, I guess...
jonesy - I use to get that bad release alot until I switched to 3 under, now I hardly ever get a bad release?
Bowspirit - The only reason I don't use 4x5 is I get excellent flight with 4x4 so I can save a little money on feathers and get a little less wind drag, not that speed is that big a deal to me but I will take all I can get :)
Guys, is there really much cearance difference between 60 x 120 and 75 x 105 on the four fletch. I have some AD Trad heavies on order and am wanting to use 4 fletch.
Use either pattern on the AD's Mark. Personally I shoot 4-4" banana cut feathers on Trad lites and Trad heavies with a 75x105 pattern.
Jeff, thats what ive been hearing about, im just to stubborn to change I want to shoot well with split fingers.Jonesy
I went back to 3 fletch last year, but am back to 4 fletch this season.
I've done 4"x4 but will be using 5"X4 low profiles from here on out ...until I change my mind again.
Recent experiments have me excited about 5X4 and also the 60X120 pattern seems to work good out of my longbow, but I have to re-orient nocks after fletching to avoid having to raise the nock point.
I would suggest experimenting a bit with aluminums or carbons with a uni style nock to see what your bow likes.
I'm also into symmetry and just wasn't comfortable with that odd colored feather on my shafts ;)
The performance loss in extra feathers is made up for in my opinion.
If I had a vario clipper, I'm thinking 4.5" would be about perfect for broadhead use and 3D.
