Title: a knife tale
Post by: Bard1 on May 14, 2007, 11:04:00 PM
The story begins when I went on my Dryad/hog hunt with Curtis and Mike.  When we started working on our bows Mike handed out Hella knife blades and hardwood blanks saying they were from Chad who couldn't make the hunt at the last minuet do to work.  So I put it in my pack and forgot about it.  For those of you who read the thread, you may recall that I had some trouble getting my luggage on the return trip.  Well when I got it and went through every thing turns out my hunting knife didn't do so well with the rough handling.  The antler handle came off.  After inspecting it and thinking about what I have learned here on tradGang, I deduced that the knife handle was poorly made.  I really liked the blade however and it was in good condition, so I took the hard wood I got from Chad and Mike, and using the things I learned in the bow making class I put together my first knife!  It's far from perfect, but it's mine, and I made it and I am darn proud of it.  I hope we have many gutting jobs ahead of us.

Always good to see another's knife works.  I bet it fits good in the hand.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks every one!    :campfire:

Kirk, the woods are Shedula (sp?) and osage down the middle.  The blank was made to match the woods in the bows we made on the Dryad/hog hunt.  I haven't finished my bow up just yet.  It turns out that I need to do a bit more tillering and I am waiting on a scraper from Mike.  As soon as I get that done, I'll get it finished up and post pictures of the bow and knife together. =)

I just want to say that making this knife was possible only because of the things I have learned on TradGang.  Just two years ago, if I had found the knife broken I would have had to go out and buy a new one.  Instead I was able to not only fix it myself, but improve upon it.  Thank's to everyone who has done a build along or just shared info.  You all are great!
