Title: Selfbow backing.
Post by: xia_emperor on May 14, 2007, 10:51:00 PM
Well I am not sure what kind of backing I should do on my osage selfbow. what would someone suggest? right now it's 64" 49lbs at 27 inch I was thinking of taking a 1 inch off both sides to gain some wieght. other wise just not sure what would be a good backing.

thanks!

Ferret your a selfbow guy what do you think?      :archer:

Copperhead skins go awesome with osage.

I am looking for something to extend the life of the bow.

If it has a good solid back ring there is no need for a backing. It will last as long with or without a backing. If the back has issues you can back it with any of a number of materials from brown paper bag to sinew to silk, linen or hemp. A thin strip of hickory or a bamboo backing will increase the weight...but if you don't need a backing, why do it!    Pat

I have a few crack that run a little way down the limbs but do not exit anywhere, but they concern me all the same.

The only way to increase poundage is to either shorten the limbs as you suggested or add a layer of sinew or both depending on how many pounds you are trying to gain.

Fill the cracks with super glue and they won't be a problem. I use Loc Tite brand and find it much better than the cheap dollar store types.

One of my personal bows has at least 8 cracks down the back, been shooting it for 6 years.
