Title: shooting / old bear bows
Post by: pdubya on May 13, 2007, 04:41:00 PM
I have been shooting a few bows I bought online. The best shooter is the cheapest bow I have , a bear cub, that has very little recurve to the tips. I wonder if this is the reason. I bought a Grizzly and Black Bear and the Cub seems so much easier and accurrate for me. All are 45# @ 28"  61" or 60" AMO. ?????

I have a Cub (an older one than yours I think) and a Black Bear. The Black Bear shoots better for me. The cub is not cut to center. It is actually a reflex longbow. Bear called it a semi-recurve, but the string does not touch the bow. These are great old bows and shoot really well. The bonus is, for now at least, they are relatively cheap. Mine are both shooters, not quite nice enough for the collectors, so the price was right. Cosmetics aside, they shoot where I look, and that is all I ask.

I like the looks of the Cub with the double shelf. See them on e... now & then.I shoot a 69 Super Mag & a 70s Grizzly.I kinda like the old Bears even though I mostly shoot longbows. Frank

Thanks guys,

that explains it 30coupe, it is a reflex longbow, I have several longbows I shoot much better than recurves for some reason. Thanks for the info.

Those were all called semi-recurves back then.  The Alaskan is also a great shooter....the one with the double shelf, I think 1959/60 ish.

I was thinking of selling this. After shooting tonight, I think I will keep it.  Anyone care to guess what this is?

We have a winner!  It is a 62" 55# '59 Grizzly with the pumpkin and chestnut colored glass on the limbs.  The bow was refinished by bowdoc and is looks brand new.

As I have posted many times on here, I have struggled with recurves for many years and prefer to shoot longbows.  Well, I took this bow out to shoot it and take these pictures, as I was going to sell it.  WOW, I could not believe how well it shot.  Even more impressive, I am pretty sure I had the brace height to low to start with, and it still shot great.

I have always like the looks of the late '50s Bear recurves and now I have a hunger for more.  I am not sure which addiction to feed now.  (HH longbows or these 50's Bear recurves) ;-)

BTW, does anyone know what the recommended brace is for this bow?

Dan

George, I thought the double shelf stopped in 1956?
