Got a African Lion (female) pelt coming soon. Was thinking about a hip or side quiver made from the paw and or part of the leg. It has all the claws intact. Anyone know how big there paws run? I can't wait to see this and get a look at the fur. If the legs are big enough maybe a back quiver? Anyone have any other ideas what ya can do with this?<><<><
Make a rug or throw for the couch. Much too cool to cut up.
Vman, Shell would never let me keep that on the couch and Stella(our Boxer) would chew it up fast.LOL<><
A female would probably weigh 350 pounds be about 5 feet long. Big animals. Paw probably bigger than your hand.
Then I see some lion claw inlaid handles for some very cool knives in the near future. Lion fur inlaid armguards. Some back quivers and with lion fur lining at the top (make a lot more quivers that way)
Lion Skin "SHORTS" and TEE natural Cammo :banghead: :banghead:
Frank Tarzan, Shell Jane. ROTFL
Frank.......we need to chat!!!!! ;)
So many options :D
I would love to drape her over the couch or hang on the wall not enough room and our dog may chew on it...this animal is stunning just to be able to look at let alone utilize.
I'd hate to cut it up. But the gentleman/wonderful friend I got her from is definately getting something made from her & I never expected this. Once I get all caught up, I'm thinking on maybe an African styled quiver with shells, some trim and maybe water buffalo hide for him.
Not too sure yet, this will take alot of thought.
Thanks for the suggestions. :)
Mickey, thanks for the info on size, I believe she was an alpha female, a paw has got to be quite large regardless, I can't wait to see. :)
Oh Terry, I still have you on the quiver list you know. ;)
A claw in a knife, that sound's real sharp, Dave. :D
Get a pic of her before you start piecing her out please. You have my e-mail to send it to. :)
Definately Dave, I may just lightly trim the sides for quiver trim and pull a claw or 2 from the rear pad for a special project...I can't see cutting that up. I'm torn even thinking about it. :(
What ever comes of her, I know ya'll will do her justice. This is gonna be good! Can't wait to see your handi-work....Terry
You Mr. (Ozarkcherrybow1) are in for a surprise of your own around the 21st of this month...!
:) :) :)
I can not wait to see some of the projects Shell will do with the Lion. I'm sure they will be unique.
Shell, These are some pics I found. You can get an idea of the size of the claws.

Ya know I could use a vest :saywhat: :biglaugh: <><
702plmo..
I think those must be mountain lion claws..I have one african lion claw in my posession and its as large as four of those put together.
You are talking a 300 lb animal I would suspect if she was the alpha female.
You will likely find the hair very short on the body like most african game I have seen..and some scars on her thorax and ham/shoulder areas if she was the boss lady.
If I was gonna build a quiver it would be from the head/neck..facing down toward the ground and the neck being the throat of the quiver, and dark brown leather at top and bottom, some brass rivet accents along the top leather and a claw dangling from a piece of polished ebony wood as an adornment.
The strap would be the same dark leather, with brass tack/rivet decoration, and lined on the back with soft leather, and black or jet and brass pony bead edge beading to bind the two sides together.
What about adding some braided grass somewhere to symbolize the african veldt? I could also see claws around the rim of the opening.
Thanks guys...
Ray that sounds beautiful! I love the idea of the ebony accents and tacking, The pony beads in opposite colors (maybe red and black with white)striping down either side of seams with some claws...
Chuck, I love the idea of braided grass and think I know of a specific bladesmith that I can send it to who does a great job :D ...
(Just kidding Jeff)
Can't wait to see the results of all these conglomerated (whew) ideas. With you'alls talents,Frank and Shell, I'm sure the end results will be stunning!!
Kenny
Shell, Ray's post sounded more like he was placing an order to me.
:bigsmyl:
he he....now that I read through it, Larry..it does...but alas, money is not there..so I just drifted off to fantasy land for a minute..you know, the Happy Place like in Happy Gilmore... :bigsmyl: :biglaugh:

GOOD LUCK ON MAKING THE LION QUIVER. I KNOW IT WILL COME OUT GREAT. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE FINAL RESULT. DID YOU GET MY PACKAGE I SENT?
MIKE
Sure did Mike . I needed them also. Ya knife making and such LOL<>< Thanks
Man I'm drooling at just the thoughts of what Frank and Shell could create with such a fine exotic hide! :notworthy: I've seen alot of different crafts made by some fine craftsmen and women....but when it comes to quivers and such....you will be hard pressed to find any finer than Shell and Frank's work for shear beauty and uniqueness! They are tops in my book! Can't wait to see what comes of the lioness!!! :clapper:
You're too kind Mark... :o
I took a few pics of those from the front paw that I still need to carefully clean off just to get an idea of the size of these kitty claws...
Ray, she has battle scars on her hind quarter and shoulders, but one right on top of the head as well, heavily thick scaring, she's quite impressive and will take pics of the whole pelt when I can get more time.
I did a quick measure and she goes just 2 inches over 8 ft from tip of tail to tip of nose and shoulders to pads, 32 inches.
These claws in pics are huge and the largest one I'm holding, from the first claw or (index finger claw) is 3 inches from base to tip.
The fur is unbelievably soft and silky to the touch and has the prettiest colors in her coat.
One of the most beautiful animals and am humbled by this majestic feminine, felidae.

Man that's a serious claw isn't it?
Yeah Mickey, Hard to imagine something could ever escape a swat from one of those on the run...
WAter Buffalo are tough and these girls take them down. You need good penetration you know.
Would make a great back scratcher :bigsmyl: <><
Those are impressive claws!
Jerry
Wow, Shell, the pics are great. When you discribed it on the phone it was hard to imagine a 3 inch claw, but in your hand it looks every bit of that. It'll be cool watching all the developments!!
