Title: which side do I make deeper to move the string
Post by: Bob at Work on May 07, 2007, 04:18:00 PM
I always forget...which side of the limb do I make the string groove deeper to move the string to one side?
thanks.

thanks...that makes sense...the limb will then pull a little more towards the side that you make have the deeper groove...?  no...the weaker side is the one that the string is leaning toward now...?  oh man...my head hurts...  :)
thanks.

ok what about tillering? my top limb dosent bend as much as my botton, so does that mean that i should sand (or whatever yall say is best) the top limb to get it to bend the same as the bottom?

Bob: have you thought of just heating it up and bending it just a tiny bit? It shouldn't take much to get the string lined up if a deeper groove will do it. Someone, maybe Eric K., gave me the same advice and I've done it everytime since.

trad only-yes, scrape or sand the stiffer limbs until it bends like the other limb...when you are finished the top limb should bend just a little more than the bottom limb...at least that's how I like it.

Bob-thanks...this is a bow that one of my students is  making and he really wants to make it the way it came from the tree...  :)   It's a wavy prop twisted piece of hickory that we cut on my farm and it's only running a little to one side...the left side and he's a righty...so it will be OK...I was just going to try the string groove to prevent  it from getting any worse.

JAWGE- help...  :)   I know you have helped me with this very thing in the past... LOL.

Hi Bob. LOL.Me too. Ok so the stave is strung. You are holding it in the shooting position. You are right handed so bow is in left hand. The string is leaning to the left. You've got to determine in uneven wood removal caused this or if the stave is naturally twisted. If  yes remove wood from the right, the strong side of the the limbs. If the stave is naturally twisted, just leave it. You can cut the nocks deeper on the left side. String will come towards center a bit. I leave the handle full width until full draw. That way I can shape it to track the string better. Know what I mean? Ask questions. Have fun. Jawge
