Title: MN bow building weekend, June 8,9,10
Post by: Holm-Made on May 03, 2007, 10:31:00 PM
This is just a reminder that I am still planning on doing this.  Near as I can tell there are 12-14 people committed to coming at this time.

Creole has said he would provide an osage stave for anyone who wants one free of charge.  People will have to be responsible for bringing a bench to work on if they are making self bows.  A bench with a vice mounted on it would be great.  Some people may be able to bring an extra stave horse if they have one.

We are having some problems with our computer and were bringing it in to have it looked at on Monday.  This is the 3rd time we have had it in and it usually takes a couple weeks.  My phone number is 320 360 4479 if you need to get a hold of me.

For more information do a search for "MN bowbuilding".  Chad

Pretty sure we will be able to make a few nice bows:

Those bows look awesome! I plan on being there with by bandsaw and hopefully a Heatbox if I can get one built up. May have to borrow one of your forms to build a bow though?

Glass bowyers:
If people need to order laminations we can have Doug Whitcher (Turkey Creek Longbows) grind them and send them to my place all at once.  I've worked with him a lot and his stuff is the best.  People would have to get their own fiberglass and riser materials.  Does someone want to order the smooth on and we can all pitch in?  Chad

Pretty quiet on this thread? Just spoke to Chad on the phone this eveneing and looks like this should shape up to be a lot of fun.
Looking forward to learning how to make a lam bow and maybe even a selfbow.

Hey Chad,  How ya doing? Looks to be a great time and beautiful work! And of course, the landscape...but then were talking about Minnesota.....    :)

One of these days if we're in the area or at a shoot, Frank and I will have to make a trip on over and say hello to you and yours.

Still want to get one of those works of art from you for my collection. Were you still interested in the buckskin vest that we spoke about while making the auction project?

Chad, I can sure order some Smooth On, need to order some glass anyhow how much should I get?  If everyones having lams made I might not have to bring the grinder then.  For your one pieces, do you splice the lams and leave the glass long? I'd like to make a fixture to clamp onto your bandsaw to make footed risers if that would be possible. Too many things to type here, I think I'll give you a ring.

Mike, just thought I'd let you know that Chad mentioned he was bringing his computer in for repairs today and may not have access to the Internet for a couple weeks.
I spoke with Chad Saturday evening and he uses full 72" length lams in his limbs. He did not think there would be enough time to put together a arched riser? Maybe if you do it in advance?
Best to give him a ring I guess.

I can bring a fixture to make footed risers. In fact chad an I exchanged emails about this a month ago or so.
It has the radius that I use for my take down recurves but it would probably work for any bow and I suppose the radius could change depending upon how far you clamp it from the blade.

If anyone is interested I can bring forms, riser templates, and everything else needed to make a take down.
I'll also bring some Fuller plast an air brush and a air brush compressor for anyone who would like to try it.

Hey guys
Chad called yeasterday. His computer is still in the shop.  He can view Tradgang at work but can't reply.
He asked that I post this repy asking Mike to go ahead and order some smooth on and that he has a sourse for laminations.  I think that he meant that he could make a group order for long laminations once his machine is up and running again, but to tell you the trouth I was in the middle of the 10th fairway at the golf course so our conversation was pretty short.
Anyway, anyone thinking about making a laminated bow that would require 72" laminations should be thinking about what they would need. It sounds like the guy that Chad has grind those for him makes a double tappered 72" lam.
He also mentioned that anyone who is thinking about a bow that has a glued up riser, might want to consider gluing it up ahead of time to make sure that you have enough time to complete the bow on the weekend.

I spoke to Chad today and he asked my to weigh in here concerning laminations.  I have been making lams for Chad for some time now and am available to provide laminations for this event for any of you that are planning a glass bow.  I use either natural or carbonized actionboo and make the tapers full-length.  I have some veneer materials available as well.  I can combine shipping for everyone and ship everything directly to Chad so postage is minimal.  Please don't wait til the last minute as I am preparing for a large local 3D shoot June 2.

Email me for info.  I will need to know the number of lams and total thickness you want for your bow.

Sounds like you fellas are going to have a great time.

We got our computer back tonight.  Does anybody have a canopy they can bring in case of rain?  How about a sheet of plywood and a couple saw horses for extra work surfaces.

Lastly, If anybody can bring another belt sander that would be helpful too.  Chad

I need some help

I am deffinately going to try my hand at one of Chad's longbows and have worked with chad and Doug to order what I need to make one.
I'd also like to do some work on self bow.
I've never done that and don't have a clue what type of tools I should bring.
I may not have everything I need, but would bring what I could.
Any help would be appreciated.

Brad

From what I understand of Self bow making all you really need is a drawknife, a cabinet scraper, and some sandpaper. I'll have all three and you are welcome to borrow them if needed. I'm hoping to build my first selfbow as well, but would at least like to see it done if nothing else.
First dibs on Chad's longbow form;)

Chad,

Hope the shoot was fun, sorry was crappie and wally fishing with my old man and brothers over the weekend, on top of working the cattle.

Just wanted to say thanks for the offer to come up and build before this big hoorah with the boys.  Sure wish I could have stayed longer, I bet it's going to be hoot!  You bet I'll be lurking when the photo's and storys arrive.

Maybe next spring,(I'm still giving thought to suprising my old man with a rooster hunt in the dakotas this fall, might have to stay an extra week  :D ).

I'm back on line again.  Hopefully the computer keeps running.  I only have so much work space availiable.  I expect about 12 people.  When I attended MOJAM people brought benches with a vice bolted on.  This gave them a work space.  They could sit on the bench secure the stave in the vice and work a portion of the stave over their lap.  This would be a good idea.

It would be helpful if a couple people could bring a pair of saw horses and a piece of plywood for a work area.

Hopefully it won't rain.  I looked into renting a canopy and it would be about 200+ dollars for the weekend.  Chad

Chad
I can bring a couple saw horses. I might even have a little plywood too.
What else would come in handy?
If I bring my gas guzzeling pickup I'll have lots of room.
I remember in an earlier string of posts many people were indicating what they could bring along, but I don't remember what they were.
It sounds like everyone that wants to make a laminated bow should be set for glass and laminations and if I remember right there should be staves for making self bows.
How are you set for bow ovens?  Mine is pretty big, but again if I drive my pickup, I could bring it with.

I guess from me you can count on.
A couple saw horses and plywood for a work bench.
Everything anyone would need to make a take down recurve except the glass, laminations and handle wood.
I have a freestanding drum sander that I made for shaping handles that can be set up outside or anywhere and tilted in any angle. I'll bring some drum sanders and sanding sleeves of various sizes and grits. I'll bring some flap wheels for finish sanding.
I'll bring some Fuller Plast along with an airbrush and airbrush compressor for finishing, although I'm not sure many will get that far on thier bows.

I'd like to tell you that I would bring another 6" belt sander, but I've been having bearing issues and I'm not sure I'll have it all working by then, so I've been waiting to see if someone else was able to bring one.

Not sure what else I could bring to help the group out.
As I said before I've never made a self bow and would like to give it a try so I'll bring some type of work table to use when trying that.

If I remember right someone was going to bring a lamination grinder.  I'd sure like to see how that is done.

Let me know what else I can do.

Brad

It's getting close.  Is there anything else we should be thinking of??

Any other supplies or equipment needed?

Meal plans? I'm thinking that we just take a break every now and then and go out for a bite.

Who all is coming for sure?

I've got Fri off work and am definately coming.

Going out for a bite once in a while sounds like a good plan instead of dealing with a bunch of meals.  Might bring some kind of meat to grill too, and some beans, etc, easy stuff.

How many are camping?  To save fuel costs I may just stay in my topper instead of pulling my big popup.

The weather sounds like its going to be nice, mid to high 70,s during the day, mid to high 50's at night. Wondering if a guy can get a shower nearby?

Chad, got the template for the 15" version of my riser done and adjusted the drill fixture. My limb formula calls for .040 glass, I'm sure you only have .050, so we may have to adjust the lams somewhat, anybody know what the poundage difference might be? If you want to try for a 60" bow, I have a formula for that too. I'll wait to rip and grind them until I get there, which should be 11-12 Fri morn.

I'm rounding up some extension cords too. Also bringing my string stuff with D97 material, I'll have to relearn how to do it

-Mike

As far as I know Chad's computer is still down so he is unable to respond to e-mails.
I'll be there Friday in the Early afternoon. Was hoping to borrow a smaller tent to set up at Chad's, but will have to use my 17" by 10" monster tent so I'll have some extra space for sleeping or storing of items if needed.
There are a couple campgrounds not too far away , I've been meaning to call the Crow River Campground and check on shower facilities, will try to remember tomorrow.
Was just thinking of heading out somewhere for eats also, rather than make a mess and have to clean up.
Don't forget to bring a funcational bow as well as there is a 3D shoot in Brainerd if anyone wants to break away and do some shooting.
I think Chad mentions extra sanders and workbenches were needed most?

I'm on line again. Finally got the computer back.  Were trying to get some problems fixed before the warrenty runs out.

About food:  I am going to purchase stuff to make my special breakfast burritos Sat and Sun morning about 10:00.  These are filling.

This leaves a Friday and Sat. night supper to worry about.  I will marinate venison chops for the grill Friday night.  I will do up enough for everyone.

I think it will be easiest to send someone to the grocery store Friday afternoon with money and a grocery list for the evening meals.  Snacks are up to you.  I have one coffee pot here.

No showers availiable at the local campgrounds, I checked.  Bring a towel you can shower at my place if you are camping here.  I also have a portable toilet coming.

We will have 8 people camping over night and about 4-6 commuting.

p.s. again, if your doing a self bow you need to bring a vice and work surface.  I suggest bringing a 2 by 12 that we can make into a sturdy bench.  You can mount your vice to the bench and sit and work.

Glad to see your on-line again. Hope it stays that way. I did call the Crow Wing State Park campgrounds today and they will let you use the showers if you buy a camping pass. Cost for camping is $18. If several people want to split the cost of a campsite and pile into a vehicle they can shower. Don'r need to camp at the park if you don't want.
I'll throw in my Solar Shower as well, just need to heat some water and wash up. Would need to get a tarp to block the wind and any gawkers that may happen by.
Breakfast burritos, you better get 2 portable potties  :scared:

Forgot to add, I'll be bringing a couple extra block of wood for risers if anyone is interested. On big hunk of Curly Maple and a heavy block of Bloodwood.
I also have a riser block of Rosewood Dymondwood with a Bocote stripe in it that I may not use if I find the wood I want at the local wood supplier tomorrow. Chad should have that block by now?

I have your stuff from Doug.  One of your Anegre vaneers got damaged by me when I was unwraping it.  I'll replace it for you.

I'm doing a seminar on applying snow camo (athletic tape) to the back of a longbow for late season hunting.  It's a highly technical art form.  Chad

Chad, hope the weather is treating you well up there. Just heard the weather report and it sounds like you are getting hit pretty hard up in that area.
I picked up a big piece of figured Wenge today for a riser, before I read that it is a monster to work with and finish;( We'll see how it goes? I'll bring along 3 extra folding chairs in case anyone needs something to set thier behinds on.
Cell phone has been acting up again lately since the washing machine/dryer incident so if you would happen to have to contact me it is hit and miss right now.

Greg, you can seal the wenge with Devcon 5-min epoxy and sand before finishing to close the pores.  I usually use CA glue on most porous woods but it doesn't work very well with wenge.
