Occasionaly, you will see something about using fish skins as leather for various purposes. I like to try almost everything at least once, so when I saw carp skins for bid on an on line auction, well, I just had to check them out.
When they came in I immediately opened the box to check them out. I thought that they would be thin and tear like paper. I was surprised that they were about twice as thick as I thought they would be, and I found that I could not tear them.
After making two bowquivers with some of the carp, I thought maybe it would be a good thing to offer one on Tradgang. The winner would be the one who comes up with the most positive comments on Carp. Now it's on so let's hear it from the fans of the lowly Carp.
Okay, he got away the first time. Now we'll try to get the photos on board. (http://i109.photo

Carp - The "Other" other white meat..........
They have nice lips :biglaugh:
The lowly carp? Not hardly. When you hook into one of those, you know you got a fish on the end of the line.As for hunting them with the bow. What better way to spend a beautiful spring day(or any day for that matter)flinging arrows. And when you hit and that line peels off the reel.I can't think of too many things more fun than that.
Carp are one of the most enjoyable things we do in the summertime. We have already started. You can't beat shooting a #20 to #40 carp from canoe. Its like having a trolling motor on it dragging you around the backwaters. Also you can't beat the taste of a large carp prepared in the smoker. Along with some enjoyable drinks and good friends its hard to beat. Almost everybody that I take for the first time gets hooked whether in the backwaters, lakes or river. My Youngest Son even painted up my JonBoat and Stenciled it with "Let it Fly". Thats his theory on Bowfishing. Next to Whitetails and Turkeys, its his next favorite. Even though he was using a wheelie bow in this pic (which now he is using a short Browning Recurve), How could a person not like it. Pics are worth a fortune.

Nothing like having a 25 lb + buffallo on the end of your line. Except of course a bigger buffallo
Nice looking quiver by the way
The 'lowly carp' makes the most beautifullest, most awesomest and bestest bow quiver adornment ever witnessed by modern traditional man.....and at least one lady ;)
When compared to mere rattlesnakes or techno-lazer engraverments, the lowly carp stands far and above the rest with it's....ahhh beaudacious scales and sunset coloring. The kings of our forefathers have been known to war over such a perfect beauty as the lowly carp. Modern day leaders often spew forth the carp and although we all take so much carp along the way we must pause......inhale the carp....and give thanks.
For the carp lies within us all. Come. Come to the carp and behold the beauty, the bounty and endless fascination and entertainement that has become.....the lowly carp.
Thank you. Now how's that for a load of carp ?
PS - Nice quivers ! Do you treat the skins at all or just dry them like that ?
Ahh the Carp....Thier thankless job of cleaning up after others; goes quite unnoticed. Scoffed at by most, revered by few, and enjoyed by millions. The blue collar chap of the waterways.
Way to go Gordy. At that rate I am suprised that in our own Early History we didn't Worship the Carp GOD!!!! Cudo's to the Carp aborigine's.
Q: What is the difference between a carp and a (insert your favorite detestable profession here).
A: One is a bottom dwelling scum sucker and the other is a fish.
Carp is a very underappreciated fish. Without carp, you couldn't have Gefilte Fish. Carp are one of the best fish for flyfishing, too. You couldn't have Japanese gardens without Carp and they are one of the most beautiful, serene places there are. Wow, the world would be a far less enjoyable, beautiful, and tasty place without the carp.
Boiled Carp, grilled Carp, steamed Carp, Carp scampi, pickled Carp, Carp-ka-bob, smoked Carp, Carp fillet, Carp steak, (to be continued)
Carp - In the right hands their skins make awesome looking bow quivers!! ;) :notworthy: (Not bad for bow backing either.)
Carp......They Smell way better than My EX wife......And the taste... Well I'm not even going there!! :scared:

Carp are intelligent, carp are resourceful, carp are downright tricky. Some of the carp we have over here are well over seventy years of age. You don't get to be that age by being dumb...you go ask Bernie. :bigsmyl:

Enough said, I think :D
Affectionately known as poor mans tuna, They are quite a regal fish, strong, handsome and willing to lay down their life for mans enjoyment. They are to our waterways what a vacuum cleaner is to our homes. Their willingness to get into traditional bow range makes them a favorite for the bow fisherman. I will add that after the hunt they make great table fare, a prized fish for smoking just hard to keep lit :bigsmyl:
Carp(e) de arrow. Nice looking quivers. We sure are a creative bunch!
Got to love a fish that wears armor, and is built like a submerine! And now they make great looking bow quivers too!
Carps are good. Carps are great. Lets have carps for every meal! Amen. Let me know if you need my shipping address.

Carp
A fish I loved while growing up
The brightest gold inside a cup
Now a different love I have
I share with strangers, friends, and Dad
Arrow nocked my gaze cast down
Intent on waters murky found
I look for fins to betray
Their hidden form on sunlit day
And in reflections I do see
The heavens staring back at me
Alas I know it is Gods wish
For me to hunt this grand goldfish
:bigsmyl:
I forgot to tell you how nice those quivers look. They are really somthing!! :clapper:
We just had an overflow on an island I have been hunting. The water receeded this week and literaly hundredes of 1-10 pound carp are rotting. I didn't know this until I was down wind.
The best thing I can say of carp is that they smell 100 times better alive then dead. Also that they are a great fly attractant.
Good looking quiver anybody would be hapy to carry.
From Coast to Coast, both north and south.... how could so much beauty have such an oddly shaped mouth.
We love to hunt them, and eat them too. In the stream or in the pan....a beautiful golden hue.
Regardless of how you extract them, from the lake or from the river, we all now know that they make a darn fine quiver.
3-D is for people that does not carp hunt. Give me a carp shoot over a 3-D shoot any day. I like 3-D shoots but I love carp hunting its 3rd to Whitetail, and Turkey Hunting.
"Carp", named by a person with dyslexia....they are good for the garden though..
Oops, that wasn't a "nice thing was it?". Looks like I'm out.... dang!
Nice Quiver though!
That quiver really turned out cool. Did you use Fritz's build along plans for it?
I love to shoot carp with my bow, even learned the hard way to put an old piece of carpet on the deck of the boat. But, you ever hooked one on a fly rod? Man, ain't much out there that has more raw power. Wading around hunting for carp will teach you patience if your expecting much success. You get to knowing how the herons and storks must feel. Know a place where it's hard to lose an arrow. The bottom of the river is solid rock, they don't last long if shot at too steep of an angle. Possumtrot knows of where I speak if he's tried the Pecos, through Carlsbad. Shoot at where they ain't and make a good shot? That ain't normal but it works.
If it wasn't for the carp we wouldn't have the Mc flay a fish sandwich. You just have to love those bottom feeders.
Nice quiver !!
Don,
Those are great looking quivers, buddy.
This fish is very abundent in the deep south.Us folks down here in Louisiana have been enjoying them for a long time. As far as my preference I like them better than buffalo to eat. Their meat has a sweet taste to it. They are a very hard fighting fish. They put up a real scrap. A lot of people that have never tried them say they are not good to eat, but I can tell you for sure they are. And as you have proven, they make great looking quivers. I'm sure they would be very pretty to back a bow with. Good luck to all !
THANKS!
ARCHER2
They've got Angelina Jolie, kissable lips!

You're looking good, and there's been some great stuff written so far. It's going to be difficult to pick a clear winner. It may take a panel to decide. Anyone have any recommendtions on who would best serve on a Carp Committee?
The carp skins used on these two quivers was purchased from a lady in New York city. They appear to have been tanned in some fashion and are pliable. I assume that she got them with the intention of designing some new item for the apparel market.
I like carp so much that I have a watergarden full of them. Course they are different colors and some people call them Koi but they are just a carp with a pretty face :clapper:

Grass carp on the back of osage. What could be a better testament to the beauty and value of such a regal fish. Except of course, if someone was brilliant enough to put them on a bow quiver, which would look excellent on this bow, by thew way :)
Carpe Diem... Sieze the day..Actually, no kidding, it means pluck the day.. So to you my carp skin welding brother pluck and arrow from your gorgeous carp skinned quiver and let er rip...Carpe Diem...
God put everything here for a reason, carp are fun to harvest, and make nice quivers, I love those carp quivers!!!!!, and then God said,

I learned to fish, fishing for carp and I taught my daughter to enjoy fishing thanks to the carp.
Carp brings back great childhood memories. Hope they do for my daughter as well.
Thanks, 4runr. How 'bout serving up some more of those yummy carp entrees? Mmmmmm....carp. LOL!
The only positive thing about Carp, is it makes a hell of bowquivers for you to give to me!!! HA HA :saywhat:
Carp's suck!
MAn....count me in please!!! that looks awesome...fine workmanship 2fletch!!
Carp....the other-OTHER white meat! ;)
Why, carp are beautiful ! They are strong, graceful swimmers, not so fussy about where they swim or what they eat. Fun to catch, fun to shoot, fun to watch. They grow big and strong. If they only jumped, they would be in much demand as game fish. In some parts of the world they feed the masses. In other parts..they still do, you just don't know it.
And they look great as the front cover to those quivers ! Oh...pick me ! Pick me !
ChuckC
Carp, better looking, better built, and better smellin' than my ex-wife! What other critter can you stay out all night chasin' and come home smellin' like that and not get in trouble! Loves my carp, can't wait till the doc says I can start chasin' em again.
P.S. Sure make awesome bowquivers too.
Throw my name in please .I caught a 8lb carp with my 5 1/2ft ultra light spinning rod and 4lb test.Took about 10min to get it in ..
Mike
I have heard people refer to Canada Geese as Flying Carp. I think that comment is a disgrace to the Carp. They are better animals because they do not poop on the golf course. LOL
Anybody ever noodle carp? When I was about 8 years old we would go up Green River in Ky and then up into the drainage canals that flowed into the river. (Every Spring the water would rise up into the fields and later in the summer the water would go down leaving hundred of fish stranded in pools.) We would wade in, grab the biggest fish we could find, and drag it out.
Once I found a Buffalo or Carp that was as big as I was. I wrestled him for awhile before I had to let him go. It was a monster.
On the way back in my uncle's old Packard, my dad and another uncle joked about how the fish in the trunk were causing the back end of the car to drag bottom. There must have been 500 pounds of fish back there along with 4 people. I believe that we may have eaten a couple of the fish, but this uncle who owned the Packard wanted almost all of them for himself.
A poor man's Surf and Turf is Noodled Carp and Roadkill Possum.
the carp is a bowhunters best Fish Friend.

Tomorrow will be the day to pick a winner for the "Eagle's Flight Archery 4 arrow Navajo CARP Quiver".
If you're holding anything back about "Carp", now is the time to share it.
The winner will be picked based on positive comments that would (even further) enhance the status of "Carp" in our society. Any contribution to our wealth of knowledge, whether it be a food recipe, compost recipe, harvest technique, or even a simple list of some of the many eloquent names for this fish, will be considered.

when I was a kid my dad would take me,my brother and my sister in to town after church to fish for carp in the river at the local community park.
we would use cane poles that he made for us with a #1 00 hook and bread balls. Man what a riot!
besides the local species of carp there was also a species he called a german carp. It was a beautiful black scaled variety that to my knowlege
was only found in that area. We would all look forward to sundays with our dad in that park.
Man I miss thoes days.
Beautiful looking quivers there Don.
I'd love to own one. Thanks
They give bow hunters something to shoot at in the off season and the Asian carp found in the IL. river are great to shoot out of the air.
Howard
As a kid I grew up catching carp on all the local ponds.
In my late teens my buds & I used to wade for them with lemonwood longbows.
When I grew older I found out what a battle they'll give you on a fly rod.
They were some great days!
Larry
Count me in, I'm a carp lover! That would look sweet on one of my Centaurs!
Guss
:bigsmyl:
Okay Larry, how do you use a flyrod for carp? Are you snagging them. I can't imagine putting on doughball on for flyfishing.
2fletch
On a couple of the local ponds there were mulberry trees. When they started to drop the berries into the water & the carp would feed on them as they sank under the tree. A ball of dark purple wool wound on a #12 wet fly hook allowed to sink under the trees fooled a lot of 'em!
Larry
Count me in, those look great. Very nice work.
Larry, that is pretty intuitive. Nice strategy, you thought more about that than some people think about deer hunting. I bet you have shot your fair share of game.
Talk about a wolf in sheeps clothing (hook with wool)... who would have thought that carp ate sheep.
Carp are great at the end of a line bow or rod. Carp make fine looking backings bows and quivers
Carp taste pretty slick smoked
Carp provide hours of entertainment for target practice
Carp look nice in garden ponds
Ok really thats all the good things I can bring myself to say for the all mighty carp lol.
sign me up-please
They are being used to help clear lakes of hydrilla - something like kudzu of the water. The stuff is insidious!
OK......before I read any responses, I'm going to post my positive comment......
Carp ....the skins make absolutely the best looking bow quiver I've ever seen!!!!!!!!
Nice Post Gordy.....I KNEW someone would have posted that....and even on the 1st page. :readit:
Never would have dreamed that carp skins would look so good on a bow quiver...Awesome lookin stuff...
Have you hugged a carp today?

Carp, "it's the other white meat."
Carp is actually a delicacy in Europe. While it is has a negative stigma here, it is very good when prepared properly. Makes for great archery sport too.
We also use carp meat for trapping snapping turtles.
Dan Frein
Please add me in, they are awsome looking!!! and very Generous of you!

Today at 6:00 PM (Daylight Savings Time) is the cut off for the "Carpathon" event. Terry Green has agreed to help pick a winner and I'm now waiting on Lonnie Sneed to see if he can help. (I sent him a PM only a little while ago.) If he's not available, my wife will be on standby to help.
Each judge will pick three candidates. Whoever shows up the most on the lists will be the winner. If there is a draw then the judges will revote. Hopefully we will have a winner by 7:00PM today.

Thanks to everyone for participating. I hope that everyone learned something about carp that they hadn't known before. I learned several things that I didn't before.
Well, it's time to announce the winner. Gordy and Joker, you made the short list on two of the three list. However, Dakota Kid made all three list. Congratulations on your brief but well written tribute about a little sucker that is not always understood.
Dakota Kid, let me know which one that you want and your mailing address. I'll mail it out promptly.
I'd appreciate my name in the hat!
thanks,

Always a bridesmaid .... ;)
Thanks for letting us play ! That was fun.
Brought back some really sweet memories. :) Thanks.

congrats to the winner
Late but have a good carp story. When i was about 12 i used to ride my bike to the home town park it had a large pond almost lake size and i would fish, well making my way along the bank one day i met this old very heavy set woman with a old beat up straw hat. (No disrespect ment with the discreption of the lady just try to paint a picture) She was fishing for carp. I asked some questions about why you would try to catch such nasty fish. Well that question turned into about 4 months of weekends fishing together and a lot of advice on how to prepair carp to eat. We grew to be fishing buds. We would catch a few carp here and there, i would give her mine of course. One saterday we were sitting there talking about this that and the other thing and her poll started to sing like crazy and then just launched from the fork stick stand and into the lake she started screaming MY POLL MY POLL, i took one jump and head first into the pond i was under water fealing around with my hands, came up for air two or three times and the about 30 feet from the bank i went to the bottom just landed on the reel it was wedged between two rocks, i came up made my way back to the bank and handed her the poll. She then proceeded to fight and land one of the biggest carps i have ever seen in my life. She gave me a big hug and a kiss on the forehead loaded up her car and that was the last time i saw her. To this day
( Im 50 now) i still remember those 4 months with my old granny fishing bud as if they were yesterday.
My first near encounter with carp came when I was about 5 years old. My grandmother had taken my cousin (who was about 8 years old), my sister, and I to the city park in Evansville, Indiana. (We walked right by the plant where Indian Archery was located.)
With the help of my grandmother and cousin I was outfited with a broomstick, heavy cotton cord, and a large hook baited with bread. I had the broomstick laying on a concrete drain and the hook and bread were just barely visible in about two feet of water.
I sat there for awhile leaning out to watch the bait. After a while I looked away for a moment and when I looked back there was this huge fish inspecting the bait. That's where I made a mistake by announcing what I was seeing. My cousin ran over, grabbed the broomstick, and gave it a vicious yank out of the water. At that point this grandad carp turned and disappeared into the depths of the dark waters of Garvins Park.
Thinking back, I wonder if a 5 year old would have any chance of landing a 20-30 pound carp. That was 58 years ago. Funny, but it seems almost like yesterday.
I, and everyone else that I know that has one, really really love these quivers...and TwoFletch is as nice a fella as you will ever do business with.
If you are ever on I-40 between Greensboro and Raleigh NC you should make a point to stop by and see Don...he makes some cool stuff!!!!
Thanks Don!!
Great lookin quiver, I will be proud to pair it with my bow. The back waters of the Missouri are startin to warm up here a bit, carp shootin not to far off for us northerners.
Thanks Again,
Dakota Kid
Got Carp! The fish that builds strong bones and promotes a healthy smile
The best thing about Carp is. The one with black trim ( second pic. ) would look even better hooked on my Black Bob Lee Long Bow.
Thanks,
Grant
Grant, I just answered your email. You're right, I believe one of these on a black Bob Lee Longbow would look good. They would do each other proud.
This is for all you carp lovers out there. I'm going to be making up the rest of the carp skin that I have and listing them in the Tradgang Sponsers Classified. They should show up in a day or so.

Wow, I'm in on this, that is cool, really cool...
