Title: Favorite fur for string silencers?
Post by: Scott S. on April 19, 2007, 10:49:00 PM
I know Hush Puppies are great, and I use a lot of rubber cat whiskers too, BUT

For those of you who use FUR SILENCERS, what critter do you prefer?  Beaver, Mink, Muskrat, Otter, Rabbit, etc?

Thanks,
Scott

I prefer beaver fur wrapped long instead of balled up.

I love Hush Puppies myself (and Bow Hush too), but am researching animal fur right now.  I have tried beaver and like them, but with so many choices, I thought I'd get some other opinions.  I've also tried mink and found them too light to do much.

I use beaver on my hickory self bow, they work great, I have had good success with muskrat also, not as quiet as the beaver, but more water resistant

I gotta admit a certain affinity towards Beaver too; but lately I have been using Mink. It seems placement is waay more important than the material.
Are we still talking about bowstrings?

Any "water" mammal. beaver, mink, otter, muskrat, etc.. The oils keep them from matting up in wet weather. I kinda like Otter myself.

Cory, 1/4" x 3or 4" strips work great.

Let me just say hush puppies are great but for fur I like to use different fur then the usual.I like wolervine on my flatbow. On my Fred Anderson Skookum with cocbola handle, black glass limbs with black and red string I use red fox a beautiful combo. And on my Green Mt. I used artic fox they are white and very thin hair.I have used fur for the looks and they work also.
