Title: Dulled broadheads...HELP!!!
Post by: Bowspirit on April 16, 2007, 08:53:00 PM
Out of the box, I can get a lot of broadheads shaving sharp, no problem. But occasionally when practicing with them, I miss my 3-D target, and the heads bury into the ground. Now, our soil is really sandy, and everytime I retrieve the heads, I can no longer get them sharp. For the life of me, I don't know what to do. Anyone else encounter this problems...

File, steel, leather, shave arm hair, (if not- repeat), put in quiver.

start with a rough stone: i use arkansas soft stones. then go to a ceramic stone, followed by a hard arkansas stone....when you are done the edge will be pretty sharp, but you arent there yet. I prefer to use a pair of old denim jeans to hone the edge the last lil bit. follow with a soft leather strop.
This is how i sharpen all of my cutting blades. I personally do not use a file because it is easier to get the bevel off. I only use a file to remove large burrs.

Get a lansky. Epoxy a small file to a pc of 9 ga. wire. Start with that, then work your way through the stones. I've never seen a broadhead I couldn't sharpen this way.

Sharpening is an lost art to most, I have been sharpening various items since I was four when I got my first knife , which I lost and yes got whooped good for loosing it.. point is be patient with your strokes and pay close attention to angle, pressure and direction one bad stroke kills five good ones..be patient..

I wanna thank you all for your advice. I just used several of your methods, choosing the best parts from each, and finally, FINALLY, got an edge that shaves hair. Y'all have no idea how much this was driving me crazy...
