Title: Simmons Steel Master sharpener
Post by: Brian P. on April 15, 2007, 01:29:00 PM
Just wondering if any of you have used this and feel it is worth the money. I just got some Tigersharks and figure they would be challenging to sharpen. I really like the looks of the heads but need help on the sharp part.

Thanks for your input,
Brian

It works great.  Jerry Simmons is an old friend of mine, in fact, he gave me one of the prototypes of the sharpener one year in bear camp.  I also own one of the newer models. It comes with a half-round file and 2 ceramic rods.  The hardwood base and clamp insures a consistant angle.  Heads straight out of the package often only require the use of the rods.  A few strokes and it pops hair.

Thanks for the reply, Gary.

Does it work as well on dull heads? I plan on shooting these quite alot to get a good feel for their flight characteristics. I am sure I will dull any factory edge off in short order.

Is there an accepted norm (other than this sharpener) to get Simmons heads hunting sharp?

I second what Gary says - well worth the money. I can get a razor sharp edge with that sharpener even if the head has been shot in the ground. At first I didn't use the half round file as the instructions said to, but now feel its very important to use it as instructed...i.e. use the base when using the file also...That little file really puts a burr on the broadhead and the rods will make it razor sharp after that....

Thanks to you as well, Wally.

I just ordered one of these sharpeners. Hope it works well. I really like the looks of these heads.

Brian,

They are definitely worth the money!  I am a long time simmons shooter and this sharpener works better than anything else I've seen.  I usually check my heads for sharpness after carrying them for a while and will touch them up with just the ceramic rods.  You can get them surgical sharp!  You are going to love the sharks, they are as wicked as they look!!

Ditto on the last comments on the sharpener.  I have one head (190 gr. Interceptor) I retired after taking 11 deer with it.  All were resharpened with the Steelmaster half-round file and ceramic rods.
