I'm getting closer to ordering my first custom, and thinking about either ebony/spalted maple flare, or Cocobolo/spalted maple flare. My question is, is spalted maple going to be solid enough to hold up to a #55 3 pc.? From what I know, the black streaks in spalted maple come from a fungus that gets into the wood. It makes some beautiful furniture but will it take the stress a bow puts on it?
I don't know how much strain it can take. My only experience with it is in bowl turning. It basically is an early stage of decomposition. Turning it into a bowl is a crap shoot. Sometimes it's kind of punky and is too soft to even sand well. I would personally stay away from it in any structural application.

I think revive our homes just had one break ,might ask him. Can't remember if it was curly or spalted........
This stuff looks awesome . I've seen this used on pistol grips and think it would look great on a bow if it will work .
I think it gets stabilized with resin. I love mine.

Knock it off KILLIE! Don't make me sneak over there and snatch that bow :bigsmyl: . Like Killie said has to be stabilized. I got some great spalted redoak from 4runr. Just did another knife handle with it. Looks kinda like maple also. If I get a chance I'll post it. I would love a riser with this red oak in it.<><
that's one purty bow killdeer and the bead work is nice as well. looks like sticshooter and i will be racing to see who can snatch that bow first.

I've seen guitar tops made of spalted maple but Killie's bow is the 1st one for me.Beautiful bow,Killdeer--and wise to guard it
now I remember where I saw one Killie! do you know if Bob "stabilized" it, or did he buy it that way? also, what is the other wood in that bow?
He likely bought it stabilized, but if you ask him, he'll tell you. The other wood is macassar ebony, one of my favorites!

screw the bow, I want that DOG! Wow that dog looks very similar to my summer. *sigh* best dog I ever had. What kind of dog is that?
OBOY! A dog thread!
(Sorry Brent...I'll take this one closed-circuit.)
We now return you to the Spalted Maple as a Riser Wood thread, currently in progress... :campfire:
oops your right. sorry Brent. Also returning you to the spiffy looking Spalted Maple as riser thread. (just got to excited about that dog.)
:banghead:
Oh man Frank I thought you said Killie should be stabilized I thought you were a goner1 :knothead: :biglaugh:
HAHAHA Galen I see what ya mean. But I was looking at when she said it was Heavily guarded? By who the pooch or Bernie LOL<>< killie that is a super looking Dog.<><
I could use some stabilizing, LOL!!
Killie, that's some funny stuff right there.
Spirit looks like there's nobody gonna touch your stuff!!
Frank, gimme just a little time and I think I got your Spalted Red Oak risor blank!!
I love spalted maple ..especially in guitar building. Epoxy resin to seal the wood is the trick to a good finish.

Oh My isn't that a sweet looking guitar!!!
Droptine that thing's a beaut for sure. That would make some sharp drum shells too!!
Sweet bass! Dean uses alot of spalted maple on their guitars--real nice looking
I do some minimal part time guitar work for a local guitar when he gets busy. The wood he gets is phenominal. I have some Spalted Maple thay I will use for my next recurve. The stuff just looks insane with real orangy Coco-Bolo
