Title: I'm new!
Post by: Mulybux on April 12, 2007, 06:47:00 PM
I'm an archery hunter, but am just shopping for a traditional bow. I've shot compound for many years, but in the '70's, I shot a Herters recurve. I have renewed interest in traditional archery and don't know what I want yet. I know this opens up a whole can of beans, as to recurve, long bow, flat bow, etc. and I know that everyone has their preferences and opinions. I'm fortunate enough to have friends that are going to allow me to try their bows out and see which direction I'll be going!

I've looked over the site and am impressed with the hints, how-to's, etc. I like the idea of the "positivity" (if that's a word) and look forward to sharing stories and asking questions!

Thanks for reading/listening!

You're "new" and were shooting Herter's in the '70s ... ho, ho! I'm old, and can remember when Herter's was the only catalog-order bow available.

Anyhow ... welcome. In general, for most people, recurves are friendlier than longbows. However, in recent years we have been given the "hybrid" longbow, which combines the best of the two. With more than a half-century of trad shooting under my belt (size 34!), I suggest you forget pure longbows for the nonce and shoot both recurves and hybrid longbows, a.k.a. "reflex-deflex" longbows. If you're patient, you can find a great used bow in either category for a steal. Wheelie bows are for rifle hunters who want the advantages of archery season. Trad bows are for the most serious hunters evolution has ever produced. It's far more attitude than equipment. Welcome.

Glad to have you aboard, lots of different opinions on bow type and brand. I have both longbows and recurves they both have there good and bad points the long bows are more fun to shoot. I love my Howard Hill bows!

If you're in Bismark, ND, you may want to consider Cari-Bow Custom bows in Morden, Manitoba. He does beautiful work. Morden's not too far of a drive from Bismark and it's always nice to try before you buy. Welcome aboard.

Hello and welcome.   :campfire:

Started on a Herters myself...about 1978 (?) Still a great bow which brought me back to the light side of 'the force' some 20+ years later  ;)

Thanks for all the welcomes and the encouragement. I'll look forward to reading more and asking more questions. Hopefully, one day I'll have some answers for somebody!

Something you may have seen before:

'Bow Hunter's Creed'

"Though I walk through the valley of the rattlesnake, I fear no evil. For I am a bow hunter of the highest ethics.

A moral man proud of his hunting heritage, a legacy I leave for others.
Lord, give me strength and knowledge to find and take a buck in his domain.

May the kill come swift and clean.

I will not forget the gift of the hunt, nor the grace and beauty of the animal that provided it."

Of course, instead of buck, you could insert whatever you want. I believe that I first saw this in "Outdoor Life" or "Field & Stream" several years ago. Just want to give credit where credit is due!
