Hi everyone! As of now I hunt and shoot with old fred bear equipment and would love to see some shooting/hunting pics of you guys using old fred bear bows and equipment. thanks
Zachary
Not sure how old you are looking for but i hunt with a 1976 super kodiak, Something neat about this bow is that the serial # shows it was one of the last bows to come out of grayling. and dad shot a deer with it in 76.
this was last fall:
Dad tends to bounce around with some of his old bears but this was last fall with a 1970 super kodiak:
o it can be bear gear all the way up to present time as long as its not compound
Awsome pics!! wish I had one of those

Here's an old Bear Alaskan LB I picked up a few months ago. I don't know how old it is, all the writing has long since worn off. It's a Grayling bow & has quite a bit of wear to it but it still flings 'em pretty good.
I have a 47# 1967 Bear Grizzly that is "officialy" 40 years old this year :clapper:
This "over the hill" old girl is my "designated" hunting bow for this year!!!!!
This is a '70's Kodiak Hunter, not sure of the exact year. Green glass, white overlays, silver coin, serial number starts with KT.
It is 50# , and still looks and shoots great.

Ozark,
Your Alaskan looks like about a 1958. or there abouts. Is it a double shelf?
I have several 50's bear bows that shoot really well. No pics of them though that I remeber. I love them older bear bows though.
I have someone who offered me a Bear Kodiak he will sell to me from the sixty.. How much should I offer him?
Here is a doe I shot with a Bear Tiger Cat!

I shot this buck with a different Bear Super K!
I digitally challenged but will try to get some pics. I hunt with a 70# Bear Mag T.D. 1980 mdl.
Hey Jason, yep it's a double shelf. It shoots pretty good still. I've even tried shootin' it left handed a few times but probably won't make it a habit. It's no fun huntin' arrows in the mass of briars behind the bales. :D
I love the old Bears too. They're my favorites out of all my bows.
I'm too brain damaged to post pics but I will be turkey hunting this year with my 64 Grizzly, 58" and 48#@28", with cedar arrows made by my bud and associate sponsor Joe with 145gr snuffers...
these pics are a great encouragement to me!!
Dan, what is the poundage on that Kodiak Hunter?
and just for you guys to know.....I shoot a 1969 Grizzly at 45#s
Zachary,
A very good friend of mine Jay Peake, gave me a few Bear items just the other day.
File and Knife set
Leather case for Take-Down B riser, and limbs
Polar Recurve 64"@45# (I think 1961)

Jay is a wonderful friend he tought me so much about shooting a recurve, and building arrows, I also love listening to his stories, about the days, before compounds. At 70 he is truely amazing.
A guy walked into my pharmacy and handed me an old Bear long bow 40# 62" with a double shelf. He said he heard I shot tradional equipment and gave it to me. Ill see if I can post a picture tomarrow. Ben
If you guys are into Fred Bear go to www.thesingingbowyer.com (http://www.thesingingbowyer.com) follow the site to hear Chad's music. He wrote a dynamite song about Fred everyone loves."The man in the Borsalino Hat " His music is different than anything else you have heard. I hunt with Chad and had the first cut of the CD before he took it to the studio. My daughter runs around singing his songs. Most folks I talk to say they never take it out of the CD player. Most of the popular Trad shops carry his CD. You can listen to most of it on your computer, however it is not as good as listening to it on a nice CD player on the way to work. Enjoy!

I was hunt with my hunting buddy and his son on this trip.
the father took his 1st deer w/this very same bear grizzly some 25yrs prior to his son takeing his very first deer

4yrd shot from a treestand 8ft high, w/recovery of 30yrd (zwickey/wood shaft)
wow I Iove these!
I love my 68 k mag, shot a doe with it last year and it was great to carry,Light,Compact, and deadly with a heavy arrow. I don't have any pics .
I got a super kodiak 65# Ive got two squirrels and the coon in my avatar with it. Hope to get a turkey by end of spring and deer and other stuff by the end of the year
here are my two bear bows. a 62" 40# longbow with a double shelf, and a 60" 60# kodiak hunter. The longbow was given to me along with another york recurve, and I bought the kodiak hunter for 100.00. I like both bows, although they are not my primary hunting bow.
In October of 1970 I had just returned to the USA from South VietNam. I was at Camp Pendleton getting discharged from the USMC. The last thing I did was go shopping at the exchange. I left with a 50# 56" Bear Grizzley. I think I paid $70 new at the time. I shot my first bow deer with that bow. I still have it and some other Bear bows but that one is special to me.
thats cool
On any given day this upcoming season I may take my 57, or 63 Kodiak's for a walk...just picked up a Cub for my wife/son and might try to find a heavier one or copy it...the old Bears are sweet!
This is my 11 year old.We went stump shooting.He uses a 45# (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g141/leongarrett/HPIM0063.jpg)kodiak mag.
Zachary, the Kodiak Hunter is 50#, and was pretty much sticking the arrows through the other side of every fish I hit. Dan
I picked up a 1969 Bear Kodiak Hunter last year. It's 68# and out-shoots bows I have paid 3-4 times as much for. Hope to have some photos with it from the field this fall.
wood slinger, thats a rare find you have there. 68#s! wow never seen a K hunter with a poundage that big

I am a water well drilling contractor and quite frequently work in and aroung Grayling, Michigan.
Repairing and replacing water wells for the residents there.
I can tell you that there are ALOT of old Grayling made Bear bows just hanging in garages and closets, all over the area. A virtual treasure trove. Many of them belonging to someone who has passed away. I have learned that asking if the current owners are interested is selling is not a good idea. Maybe there are too many good memories of crisp October days; better days in a better time, that they are not willing to part with.
I just recently met kind lady in her golden years.
Her husband has been gone for over ten years she said, and her garage could be considered a Bear archery museum. When I saw the bows, arrows, and quivers all over the walls I stopped in my tracks.
I quickly counted over three dozen bows. A work bench at the rear with everything needed to craft
wood shafts into the works of art that rested patiently in the quivers. Waiting for him to return. EVERYTHING is as he left it she said.
She told me she keeps hoping to see him out there
building arrows. I could have cried.
I started to tell her not to let that stuff go to
just anyone, and that it was all worth quite a bit, but she already knew. "Its not going anywhere", she said. I wanted to look closer at all of it, but knew I couldn`t. All the best were there, from the fifties to the seventies. Treasures indeed. Makes me wonder how many of those old bows are actually out there. Waiting.
As a last note; the water well he put in HIMSELF, more than fifty years ago, is working again. After all these years he is still taking care of her. ;)
What a beautiful story. I see a magazine article there. Just change the location to keep the buzzards from congregating.
Killdeer
Killdeer, My daughter was wonderin how you got her target ;) good shootin.
yeah I agree....awsome shootin
Great looking Bears. This one belongs to a good friend.
59 Kodiak. She's a sweet shooter.

I have a couple old curves - 50 + 65#, a couple double shelf Polars and just bought on double shelf old Kodiac from on line auction that needs a tip overlay replaced - 47#. Planning to do a "like Fred" turkey hunt with it. Maybe even play around lefty and see how the dominant eye shoots.
Shaun, I can't wait to hear how that "like fred" turkey hunt turns out!
Recently bought a '64 zebrawood grizzly from a fellow member and it will go to the woods this fall- would like to get a deer with a little bit of history!
sounds good!

Nice pictures everybody and good thread !

I have a '70 Super Kodiak out at the BowDoc's. Having the shelf cut down and radiused a bit like Fred used to do. Will have it refinished in satin non-glare finish. Replacing the coin with the FBSC hat pin. I have done this in my head so often, and now I'll get a chance to see if I'm nuts or not...............Shick
droptine ,would you be interested in selling that 59 Kodiak any time soon ?......stabow
When I was 12 years old I was the oldest of 4 boys and my folks just divorced. My mom scraped up the money to buy me a Sears Flicker Longbow made by Bear Archery. That was in 1972. I have no clue where she got the money cause we was po! I think I got a few frogs and a rabbit with it. My first bow. I still have it and always will!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How you like that there backstop? It's one of those foam step exersize thingies that ole sissy boy richard simmens sells. Found it at a flea market for a couple bucks. It took a lot of shots before I ate a hole thru it, thats for sure!

70's Black Bear, 40#@28, 60"AMO.
They're both auction specials that I will probably keep forever.
I like that cub
I have a 55# '59 Grizzly that was refinished by Bowdoc. It is simply beautiful. I sold my 55# '57 Kodiak last year in a fit of stupidity. I will take a pic of the '59 Grizzly and post it here shortly. I am almost afraid to take it out hunting, but it deserves to hunt again.

Left to right:
58" Grizzley 65#
60" Kodiak Hunter 50#
64" Polar 45#
62" Alaskan 44#
64" Kodiak 47#
First two are RH the rest are Dbl shelf. Kodiak is the most recent. Got it realatively cheap at the auction site (missing tip overlay) and replaced the tips with FG to shoot FF string. The Polar and Alsakan have helped several kids start out, not real fast, but easy to shoot. The recurves are great performers. The 50# Kodiak Hunter has taken a doe from the ground with an old green razorhead and cedar shaft and is also my go to fish bow.
wow!!!!!!!!!
This is a beautiful zebrawood Grizzly 65'. A great shooter. 42#, really pretty. Also have a Cub and Black Bear. Cub is the best shooter for me. More longbowish.

I have seen K-Hunters ad K-Mags with what is described as dog-leg design. They seem to be more substantial than the regular Hunters and Mags. Is the dog-leg design more desirible and are there functional reasons for/against one design over the other? Lastly, what are considered to be the best years for Mags and Hunters built in Grayling?
Thanks
FredBear92, I also shoot a 69 Griz 56" that I recently found in a pawn shop, a 50#. Good shootin quick little bow.
well there were no K-hunter doglegs. But I would say that the best k-hunters and k-magnums were the ones of the 60's. But the ones from the 70's are also great bows. Most people don't shoot the doglegs much. They are now desired more for collecting.

Posting pics is quite easy...Most sites have the tools to upload pics, some do not as is the case here and with my site.
join a site like "photobucket" and you can copy and paste the image to a thread here.
http://www.photobucket.com is free to register
It's real easy to do once you've joined. Upload your photo's. once done the photobucket site creates image addresses.
copy and paste the IMG "address" into the actual thread and the pic will load automatically when you post. essentially you will have two internet windows open on your computer. This site and the photobucket site allowing you to copy and paste pics to your hearts content.
you guys are a lot of help thanks!

killdeer thank you...that is the string that came with it. I dont think its an original string though and i have replaced it. I just purchased it a little over a month ago and is my first recurve. I was surprised at the quality as well being that its so old.
fredbear92 yea its got a few dings here and there but all in all I am very pleased with the quality.
Just an aside, I have a Remington 581 .22 rifle with the same kind of grain in the wood. It is from about the same timeframe as your Tigercat. Maybe they shared the same supplier?

Killdeer~running out of wall space... :help:
Van, I went old bow crazy for a couple of years and ended up with over 50 recurves, You can only horde so much stuff-So, I sold em all and now I'm hangin all the selfbows and backed bows around the den of death :) :) Plus, I figured I'd give someone else a chance to appreciate all those nice peices of wood.
Hillbilly, I agree with you about the target bows from that era...they more so than the hunting bows were spectacular with all the different shapes & exotic woods. I still have my collection even though I lost wall space a long time ago :) Doc
These are two of mine and I've had them since they were new

I got a private tour of the Florida plant with the late Frank Scott. It was a sunday afternoon and the plant was closed. He took me to an area that was fenced in so to dozen Kodiaks, many late 50's & mid 60's grizzlies, a few target bows. All in for repair. Bear never repaired them back in the day.
However, they did refinish a few bows in the 50's and early 60's. For the most part they just replaced the bow no questions asked. Now that was customer service.
I saw bins of stored exotic hardwood any bowyer would faint over. I sat at Fred's desk. I was 8 feet off the ground that day. I was blessed that day for sure.
what an awsome opportunity!
Just picked up this K-Hunter (very early 70's). 60" AMO & 50lbs. I need to get an original type guard for the riser and possibly replace the rug, but other than that, it is a beautiful old bow. Now the work begins building my strength to hold 50 lbs.

I just traded my grizzly for a supermag48
I got a chance to break out the camera this evening, and thought I'd contribute to this thread by posting some of my Bears.
First is my fathers bow that he passed down to me, a 70's model Kodiak Magnum, 45@28.
Second is my early 80's Custom Kodiak Takedown, B handle, 60", 70@28. This thing will launch and arrow with authority and really likes a high brace height.(over 9 inches)
And lastly, is my favorite bow to shoot. I probibly break this thing out more than any other. Its a '56 Kodiak Special, 68" 48@28. I haven't changed a thing on this bow other than build it a new string. Its got the original grip, possibly original strike plate and rug. Accurate, super quiet, and smoooooooooth to draw. I paid about $70 shipped on the auction site for this one and I don't think I will ever sell it.

And the bow tree, showing the trio.

I finally found me a beautiful old bear grizzly
1959 or 60 near as I can tell, all original, still has the feather rest, thing looks new. I even got a dozen orig arrows with 6 bear razorheads and bleeeders.
The whole setup. bow, string, guard, arrows, glove, all look like they were used maybe 50 or 100 shots and then stored.
Sorry the ex got custody of both digitals

I have a Super Grizzly 58" 45# with serial number KD 13943. Anyone have an idea what year it is.
I think the K series started in 1970 but I'm sure someone will be able to say for sure.
Thanks for the info.
