Just got a new longbow with a gloss finish. Got any ideas on how to take the shine off? Should I use steel wool or 600 grit sandpaper?
I would get real FINE steel wool.<><
Or a scotch pad from under the kitchen sink
0000 steel wool.
Don't ruin a bow you may later want to sell. Just buy a box of kid's crayons and keep the limbs coated while you hunt.

yup! or removable camo spray paint
I used 0000 steel wool with light buffing strokes. Tried the green pad but liked the steel wool better except for its a little messier. Like the crayon idea also. I may try that.
A qiuck spray with satin poly. Pat
I like Pat's idea the best... but I won't hesitate to use a light dusting of any cheap spray primer... the primer removes easilly.
The 0000 steel wool suggestion works well also and when you want the bow to shine again, just use some paste wax mixed with elbow grease.
For something that works well but is not permanent, apply paste wax but do not buff out.
use a spray called "dulcote" its in hobby shops it is a clear spray on that really works and is easy to remove if ya ever want to..
I use an artist matte spray-it comes off easily with soap and water, rubbed with a towel.
x2 on the suggestions re: nothing that permanently alters the finish.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll probably try the oooo steel wool. If I want the shine back, it can be buffed out.
string wax left unbuffed works for me
turtlewax not buffed will work for the season. Wipe down when the seasons over. No ill effects to the bow.
what about that wax stuff black widow makes just for this?
"Widow Wax" is used to add gloss to the bow not to dull it
You ever wonder why they make shiney hunting bows and shiney hunting rifles!? Do they really command a higher price in the market? Not everybody hunts in Seattle!
Then again, there's Limb Skins.
