Title: Texas Afterburn-Hog hunt(A change in dates)
Post by: Littlefeather on April 04, 2007, 05:28:00 PM
Charlie Lamb and I are talking about hosting a second Texas Sweat type hunt in July. We are looking at doing a 5 day hunt for a large group. This would be very similar to Texas Sweat. I'm currently negotiating 96 sections to host the hunt on. Javelina and hogs both! July is hot so Charlie and I are choosing to hunt hogs at night. Javi's are not legal at night but you could hunt them during the mornings. This thread is just to test the waters to see who would like to attend if we make this hunt reality. Thanks for looking! $175 per day. CK

Curtis, I would love to get in on that. Keep me in mind. I need about a month notice to set the time off. Thanks.

Donald

It will be great to meet some of you guys.

If not working on a storm I'd hit that.

I think the time about 10 days before the full moon is best. Moon is waxing (getting bigger) and is about 3/4 sized. The big plus is that it is up high at sunset and one can hunt the first part of the night. If you wait till the actual full moon, the moon rises at sunset and it is real dark for  a couple hours till it gets high enough to shine down. Plus it comes up almost an hour later each night. Keep us posted.

Yep!! CK and I have been woolin this one around for a while and I think he's done hit the mother load of a hog and javie ranch.

Should be fun even if it's a little hot. If I can take it, anyone can.

not to assume here....
what are the limits on a hunt like this? one a nite, 2 for the trip?
ya know how the "treasury secretary" will be addin and subtractin on how much per pound
she's jokingly got me up to about $12 per pound for one deer a year..but does want me to shoot a pig or cow (she won't eat deer!!      )even if it tastes like chicken er, uh, i mean steak
 :smileystooges:
i'd face the music tho...  :bigsmyl:

CK, I was talking with Mark Horne last night (guess what I've got coming  :D ) and he mentioned you were trying to get in on a ranch out near Odessa that was just overrun with hogs... this wouldn't be it, would it?  :)   From the sounds of things it'd be a fantastic hunt and I don't think you'll have problems filling up the hunt!
My wife would kill me if I left her alone 9months pregnant!!  You'll be the first guy I call when I get "cleared" for travel!

Well, that would make 4 hunters confirmed. Several guys that I'd like to meet too!

Yes Jeremy, this would be the same ranch that Mark spoke about. It looks like I'll head out there to scout and hunt very soon. Scout 60,000 acres? Yea right!

Billy, I work with the land owners on what the limits will be but I know for certain that this would be a no limit hog hunt. Kill all you can! Generally I set a one javelina per person limit but this place may handle more. Just gotta check things out before I go too far.

I may also offer a three day hunt on this same deal for the guys who can only encompass a weekend. CK

Looks like we got ourselves a hunt! I still have to sew things up on my end. I don't want to go too far before I get all the other ducks in a row.

Stinson twice in one year? Lord help us! You could bring your Son this time Dave. CK

If there is still room for more I would really like to get in on this, got the ok from the accountant (wife) will just need to arrange the time off at work once I know for sure of the exact dates. Always wanted to hunt hog so I would be willing to give up a weeks vacation from my elk hunt for the new experience and a chance to meet a few tradgangers.

Land owner called back to confirm that we have a deal. Mark Horne and I will be headed out that way very soon to scoot those ducks closer to the row. Looks like we got ourselves a hunt in order fella's. Simply post here to get your name on the list for Texas Afterburn. Oh Lord, please give me strength to put together two big hunts a year  :scared:  . Don't know about the Airconditioning thing yet Dave. The hunters house on the property only sleeps eight at the moment. Still have lots of stuff to rummage through before everything is solid. I'll keep everyone posted. CK

Curtis,
Can you offer some details on the hunt so I can calculate cost.  I'd be flying in so what airport would I look to?  How far from the airport (assume I'd need to rent a car)  Would I need to bring food and bedding?  Do I need to buy a new winter parka?

Guys -

Just talked to CK about some of these questions, and he said to let you know that many still can't be answered just yet.  He plans to be making the scouting trip on May 4th, and should have all the answers shortly thereafter.

As of now he's planning to schedule the hunt around the full moon in June, and offer both three and five day hunt packages for $150 per person with lodging on the ranch included.

Gary (Pop) Kellar

This will be a "cherry hunt"!!  These hogs haven't been actively hunted before, therefore should make for some interesting hunting experiences. Lots of bunnies too!

Please be patient and we'll get back with you on more details as they are available.

Didn't realize there were so many Trad guys so close!  I shot Trad years ago and then with the magazine and everything else I usually hunted with rifles.  Recent increase in migraines made me decide to put the rifles down and turn back to Trad.  Still knocking the rust off and learning tons from this great site.  Love to spend a day on the range without the day long migraine that follows!  Hooked for sure....PM me with any info of 3D ranges close or clubs or whatever is in this area....LOVE to take part....Thanks!

Mornin' Fella's! Just got in from a fantastic hunt that I put on for Striker Bows. As you guys know I've been away from the computer a heck of a lot lately running these hunts. I appreciate all the interest you guys show in all the hunts. Unfortunately as Dad has said in above post, I won't know anything solid about this hunt until after I return from the May 4th scouting trip. I'd hate to book up a hunt now and then have lots of changes to explain later. I'm quite certain that this ranch is going to work well for us due to a high supply of both hogs and javelina. Plus, how many times in a guys life does he get to hunt a ranch with a 20 square mile border. I think we can fit a few guys on the ranch. As I understand it, there are no working feeders on the ranch right now. That means you'll be hunting mano e mono on the animals. spot and stalk or corning roads. The terrain as partched and without natural water sources. There are man made water holes across the ranch where animals drink. They have to drink here. That will take the place of feeders for those of you who hunt feeders.
I will make corn available on the ranch as well as a limited supply of ice. Your needs should be simple while there. You'll need your drinks and snacks for sure. I'll look into feeding the evening meal but for now it looks like the stated price of $150 will not include the evening meal. I will have a tracking dog with me. Sassy's doing very good and tracked successfully for one hunter this weekend. OK, for now we'll plan somethingaround July 26-31. This would be the 5 day. The three day should run July 26-29. I'll only offer a few spots for the three day hunt. Again, we're planning in motion until I return from the scouting trip.

Black Gold, Call me. I've got hunting ranches around Victoria that I run hog hunts on and I'd like to talk about possibly cross marketing. Thanks! Curtis

OK Gang, We're officially a go on the Texas Afterburn! 7Th Age Bowhunting is now about 140 square miles strong across West Texas now. This event will be taking place!!!!!! We'll be deciding which ranch we'll be hosting the hunt on in the next two weeks. I'm also not sure how many will be allowed in the gate at this time due only in part to limited lodging. If we go with the smaller ranch we'll still have 40 square miles to stretch out on. For now I'll be taking the first 15 hunters to send deposits. The details of this hunt will be posted on Sponsor Classifieds with all the details. For now I'll say that there will be a two javelina limit, unlimited hogs and rabbits. This place has a Jackrabbit and bobcat population second to none. I'll be headed back out west in two weeks to sew up all the final details. We'll be looking at Alpine, Texas as the destination. Please consult Mapquest for travel arrangments. Flights can be made via Midland-Odessa International Airport where you can share a rental for the final 100 mile journey into the coolest 5 day hunt I've had the opportunity to host this year. This is sure to be an event that will hold strong in the memories of all hunts gone by. Rumor has it that we've even got a swimming pool to cool in while you sip a mid-day Tecate laced in salt and lime. If you think you'll be attending please check the classifieds for details before you guys crush my cell phone. I'll go prepare the classifieds right now. Thanks for looking and I hope to share camp with you very soon! CK

Who needs hogs for evening entertainment when you have a Charlie and a Kevin along?  That alone is well worth the price of the ticket!  Now if you could just get a Fulla (Iron) Bull into that act you'd have to get a bigger ranch for the event.
