Title: Shaft shooter vs Veritas dowel maker
Post by: Ed Isaacs on April 02, 2007, 07:30:00 PM
If you have, or have used a shaft shooter like the one from 3 rivers, please give me feedback on how well it works; i.e. how difficult is it to adjust? Is the cost justified by the outcome vs the Veritas dowel jig (the more expensive one)?
For those of you who have the $169 Veritas dowel maker from Lee Valley Tools, do you have any trouble adjusting it to cut to 11/32 or 23/64? Is the finish decent? I already have the less expensive one, but want something a bit more precise. It's either this or the enormously expensive shaft shooter, as I'm not familiar with using a router and am not a machinist

thanks!

I got a shaft shooter (3river)for Christmas this last year.  So far I've made, probably, 5 dozen shafts.  Once you get the speed on your drill vs. the speed you feed it through right it's pretty awesome!  I've messed with the adjustments a little to try down-sizing the diameter but I ended up just putting it back where it was.  It comes set for 23/64, which is where I've had it for most all the shafts I've done.  You can get a 5/16ths adaptor for it but, like the machine itself, is stink'n expensive!!!
I've done lots of Douglas Fir and a little bubinga, hickory, and purple heart.

I don't know anything about the Veritas....

Must be some more folks using one or the other?
