Title: St Jude Auction Teaser - New Pic on Page 4!!
Post by: Jeremy on April 01, 2007, 07:58:00 PM
It's that time of year when everyone needs to start making plans, getting their materials together and started in on making all the wonderful items for this year's auction to benefit St Jude Children's Hospital!

I hear Doug has set the goal high this year (as it should be) and I know with all the talent we have here there are going to be some awesome stuff donated this year.

So... why don't you post some pix as you get started?!  Let everyone see what they've been saving their pennies for!

Here's a teaser of my knife for this year:
It's a bit different than anything I've done before, but I've had it in mind since last year's auction and have been working on what I needed to do it.  The heat treat is finished and it's ready for the final grind.
It's differentially heat treated and will have the etched temper line I like, as well as something else I haven't shown before     ;)

So what has everyone else been working on?

Sweet looking blade, Jeremy. I usually donate a bunch of small, odd items (so anyone can join in) BUT I can tell everyone this - If you missed out on one of my wife's hand crochetted Afghans last year, get ready. She's made some in different patterns, and  more  chances this year. I hope to see folks opening their wallets for those     :)    .

Good thread, Jeremy - join in with some hints, clues, specifics, pics, etc, Folks.

Here are last years Afghans by Rose:

Doc, this is one of those knives I needed to try just to see if I could pull it all off.  The hard part is done, but the really hard part still to come  :)
I'm breaking ground on the new shop in a few days... should be an experience... won't be much knife making or woodworking done until the shop is operational, but finally having space for everything will be nice.

I heard a rumor that my father finished a knife for the auction as well and he's pretty impressed with it... I'll see if I can get him to post a pic.

Bernie, I still have the picture you donated a few years ago up... it'll be moving once everything in with the house is set up (ie nursery is done) but it'll still be displayed.  Whatcha got this year?  :)

Jeremy I need your address. My boy would be more than happy to make some nursery donations for your boy.

Glad you still have the pic Jeremy (And I hope your new shop is blessed). I haven't found as much stuff this year (yet) but when I get stuff, I stick it "away" and don't think about it much until I break it all out for pictures - so I don't know what I have for sure.  That's one reason Rose made more Afghans this year. Hope I'll get some more "small stuff" before "time" though. I do recall I have a Green Arrow Comic Book that I hope some bidders will want.

I was thinking about doing that, VTm, thanks. I did, the first year, but last year there were two or three others so I held off, but I may do one again this year, regardless of others, as folks seem to like them (all). "Pine Cone" (Claudia) got that one from the first year.

Well since only one person can win each auction, more is better Bernie gives us things to spend our Mason Jars on.
Title: Re: St Jude Auction Teaser - New Pic on Page 4!!
Post by: ber643 on April 02, 2007, 08:46:00 PM
Talking about the "Mason Jars", I decided to count mine. Only $26.75 - but that's not bad for pocket change from an ol' guy with no job - LOL. The best part is it is an amount (still growing) that St. Judes wouldn't have had if "Tique" hadn't started the Mason Jar challenge. If "you" Haven't started one yet, there is still time. Every little bit counts, you know!!!

True Bernie, I believe we'll have the collection jar for cash donations this year also for those who just want to give and don't want to bid or win a bid.
Title: Re: St Jude Auction Teaser - New Pic on Page 4!!
Post by: ber643 on April 02, 2007, 08:58:00 PM
Yep - they can do that with whatever they don't get to "spend" on winning bids (or just want to donate, as is) at the end of the auction (or during it too I suppose). Doug Campbell will fill us in on that, when the time comes, if not before.

Man I'm lovin these teaser threads!!

Bernie, I know you and Rose will do more than your part for the auction, it's good folks like you that make it the huge success it is.

Really looking forward to the finished product Jeremy, Jeff, ....

Heading out in the AM for a couple weeks away from the Ranch with the wife and kids so you guys keep things hopping.  Doug

Quit it Shawn, yer makin' me blush!  :smileystooges:   How's life treating you buddy?

I just heard from my dad.  He says this knife is a "maybe" for the auction.  It's a nice copy of a classic Woodcraft blade.

He still has time to come up with something else, but I have to tell you guys, if he puts this one up you'll be bidding against ME!

Yep, a pail will work, Calvin - LOL. About all I can ever do on knives is make an opening bid or something, and then get the hey out of the way - but with a pail full you might get to go  almost  all the way to the last bid   :D

OK, so I need a little input from you guys.  The pic below shows where the knife is right now and the original design sketch I did for this year's knife.  As you can tell, somthing is still missing.

I was planning on doing a silver wire inlay on the knife, but was wondering if I should leave it alone and just round things over and finish it up as is?  The walnut burl (thanks bbassi!) is going to finish up really well!

Whatcha think?  :)

I like the way you have planned on the drawing. That looks like a good idea. Wish I could do a knife like that. I am working on my first one now. Will learn to forge someday when I can find the brick to make a forge. Really nice knife, good the way it is, but I think that inlay will set it off nicely.

I think I found one to bid on no matter what you decide!  But if you are building it specifically for me, I would love the silver inlay.  ;)

I was looking at some at B'more this week end (oggling only) and those Burls sure do finish up beautifully - no doubt about it. I think it's going to be special either way - to whoever wins it. Since it's not a custom job it should be the Craftsman/Artist's choice - IMO

It will go too rich for my bidding blood, but if I had DEEP pockets, I would want the inlay!!!!!

Legolas would be proud to carry that one.  WOW!!!  WHAT A KNIFE!!!!

Jeremy, Either way it's just plain AWESOME!  But the silver with add a little contrast to the handle and really "set it off"..

You continue to impress me with every knife.....

I guess it's time to go see if sliver inlays into walnut as easily as brass does into maple!  Thanks for the encouragement guys!  Just what I needed!

John, did I promise you some high temp bricks for a forge.  I had three people ask for 'em, and can't remember how many I sent out      Lots of stuff has been slipping the mind the last few months (7 to be exact)  9-1/2" weeks to Dday!  My wife really doesn't like it when I refer to her due date as "Dday"  :D

Send it to me first Jeremy, I'll let you know if it needs the inlay.......promise....

Awesome looking knife as is, anything else you do will "just" add to a beautiful knife.

What are the pins made of?  If they aren't silver, I'd leave it plain.  With the forged finger guard & butt cap...more re-inactment/early turn of the century.  Either way very very nice...Doc

If anyone is wondering, brass is MUCH easier to inlay than silver, and it's easier to inlay the wire in hard maple than walnut burl!
That said, how's this look?

It's pretty good, but I need to tweak my tools a bit more to get it looking spectacular before doing the inlay on a handle.  I'll see what I can do by the weekend.

Doc, the pins are nickel silver, the wire is silver bezel wire with a bit of nickel mixed in to give it some strength.  I think I'd prefer more pure silver than this to make it easier to fill the space.

I stand corrected.  I checked my order and the wire I got was the nickel silver wire, which definitely explains the added difficulty.

I'll give it a shot again tonight with the modified tools and if it looks good to me I'll start in on the knife.

This knife would go real nice with the flint lock kit I'm putting in the auction!

Looking good Jeremy. you asked the question but I think you already made up your mind. LOL. That silver really makes it "pop". I can't wait till you get this one done so you can get on to more important stuff.    ;)    :readit: . JUST KIDDING.

when you get flooded with orders from the people who don't win this one and need some more walnut, let me know.

Well, I had a little "liquid courage" when I got home and headed out to the shop:
The little white fuzzies are from the napkin I used to wipe on some acetone before taking the pic and after sanding and the finish it should look good!

Brent, everything is coming along - thanks for your patience bud!

Stay tuned... the next pic will be in the auction forum!  :D
