Can anyone recommend a quality black bear guide in Ontario? I've hunted bears twice before without so much as seeing an animal. Both outfitters are now out of business, if that's saying anything. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi Monty; unfortunately a lot of Ontario guides have gone out of business, because of the loss of our spring bear season. A friend of mine that was an excellent sping bear guide had to shut it down due to the low success rates of a fall hunt. He went from harvesting 50 spring bears to about 15 fall bears with the same amount of hunters! Result, a bunch of disappointed angry hunters. Also our northern ontario Moose outfitters are allocated about 1-3 moose tags, How can you make a living like that? The next closest place would be Quebec. They still have a spring bear hunt.
Point well taken. Can you (or anyone else) recommend a good bear guide in Quebec?
The only one that I have heard of that has a god reputation is a fella by the name of Ron Henry, he hails ot of Fort Coulange Quebec, not far from the Ottawa border. There are probably others.
are you looking for a spring bear or fall bear hunt? for spring bear i hunted with "Long Lake Adventures" in New Brunswick 3 years ago and saw 19 bear while sitting on stand and a half dozen others. send me a pm if you want would like the info.
Try Bruin's Claw Outfitting near Timmons, Ontario. I hunted with them last year and it is a superb outfit! I harvested a 362# brute and it was the experience of a lifetime for this whitetail hunter! These fall bears are tough, because of the competing food sources, but about 95% of our hunters had shot opportunities. The camp is usally booked a couple of years in advance. The facilities are spartan but comfortable. I can't recommend them any higher though. Check out thier web site. http://www.bruinsclawoutfitters.com/ I am the one behind the 362# P&Y with the training wheels (shoulder injury).
Lookat Ron Laforge at The Bears Den. 28 Years in business. Really knows his stuff.
