Title: What finish for Bubinga???
Post by: fireman_3311 on March 29, 2007, 06:52:00 PM
I'm thinking I might get to work on my 3 piece longbow some more this weekend, been too busy to even pick it up all week...What finish should I use, on the Bubinga wood? Was looking at Deft lacquer, or Minwax polyeurathane, both in a rattle can...The bow has clear glass over bubinga on the limbs. Thanks for the help!!!!

Brad if you are gonna use a rattle can go with MinWax Helmsman Spar Satin. Great stuff! I've refinished acouple bows with it.

Most bubinga I have worked with has been fairly porus. Depending on how smooth you want the finish to be you might want to use some sort of filler first. I used a few coats of CA glue on my last bubinga riser and light sande between coats.

Don't use lacquer.  It's too brittle for bows.  I've had good luck with Helmsman.  Don't know if Bubinga creates any special circumstances though.
