For the past several months I have been obsessing about buying myself a new bow for my 50th birthday next year. I have been saving money for quite some time in order to have enough.
The other day at a 3d shoot, I was talking with Rob, the owner of Lancaster Archery Supply, and mentioned that my son was shooting an old recurve that I got used, and that he pretty much had outgrown it. Rob told me he just got in some nice recurves, and that he would set my son up with one if I wanted.
Long story short, I decided to use the money I saved for my bow, to get this recurve for my son, Josiah. We went over to the shop, he shot it, and his eyes lit up! We walked out of there with a new recurve for him, and a dozen arrows as well.
Rob really gave me a great deal, too!
We went down to the archery club last night to shoot his bow. I can tell you, the pleasure I ahd watching my son shoot a new recurve, instead of a hand me down, was alot more rewarding thatn shooting a new one for myself.
I'll probably get a new one some day, but right now I have a Silvertip recurve, and a Foley longbow that both shoot great. Now he has a new one, too!
Makes it all worth while, I tell ya! You dads probably know what I mean.

:notworthy: My friend, thats just plain awesome. I cannot wait till my daughter is big enough to shoot a bow.......awwww, what the heck----maybe I want her to stay little just a while longer.
Your a heck of a Dad, and I don't know you from Adam, but I'm proud to have been able to read something that was so inspiring. Wish I would have had a Dad growing up..
Jeff
Man, that's good stuff right there. Lee, I'll betcha you'll never regret it!!
You belong to the Hero Dad's club!!
Good on ya Lee. It's a great feeling to know you made your kid genuinely happy. :clapper:
All right!
Now start saving for your 51st birthday present!
Dan
Too cool Lee! Enjoyed hearing of your gesture as well as your pride in your son!!
May the Bow Gods smile on you for your generosity and consideration in the very near future.
makes me wish I had kids but that ship has sailed at my age
Good for you man.Enjoy your time together.
Oh, you spoil that boy!!
:bigsmyl:
Good for you, and lucky for him for having a great DAD. Alan
Well done Lee!
F-Manny
I'll second those remarks Lee 8^). Good show!
Are you bringing that boy and bow to Denton?
Once a dad always a dad. What goes around comes around. You the man!!!!!!!!!!!!
Way to Go Mr. Viv
I have two boys and a daughter who all like the outdoors. Now I am shopping for bows for my grandchildren. Yes Lee I understand. Outstanding my man, just outstanding.
Kind of embarassed about the accolades, folks! Just thought it was the right thing to do. Josiah has always had the hand me downs from his older brother, and I figured he needed something new of his own. He's a good kid, does great in school.
Besides, it's hard enough to decide which of y two bows to shoot or hunt with without throwing another one in the mix right now.
George, we won't be making Denton this year. We have a family obligation in July, and my oldest son's wedding in Sept that I'm using vacation for. We hope to get up there next year.
Lee
well done lee! i also enjoy seeing the look on someone elses face when they receive a new bow more than i do when i get one........ when do ya hit the big 50?
Will you be my dad? Just kidding. I think that you just saved yourself from the old folks home. There is no way he will put you there now. Ha
Good stuff Lee! I can remember my dad buying me new bows and arrows - it was always exciting and appreciated.
Shapeshifter,
I turn 50 next May, but with the waiting period on some customs, I figured I'd have to order this year to get it, also factoring in the cost. I'm saving again, and might be able to swing one by next year, but I'm not really obsessing over it. we still have my oldest son's wedding this sept, and we're helping them out financially a little.
I'll get some pics of Josiah and his new bow here pretty soon. Getting ready for opening of trout season here, and turkey just around the corner.
Lee
great lee spoil him while you can he will be gone before you know it.ill see that bow in baltimore!
Ohhhhh C'mon.....Your a Dad,Thats your job.....
Just remember,If YOU don't spoil them.....no one else will!!!!!
That was a great thing you did for your son. After he shoots and looks at you, the smile will be, thanks dad.
Thanks all! We went to a trad shoot this weekend, so I thought I'd include a picture of Josiah with his new bow. He's shooting it better than I do with my bow, and is enjoying it alot. It was well worth it (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v208/Bigviv/IMG_6209.jpg)!
Lee
Handsome young man Lee and that's a pretty bow. No wonder he was happy :bigsmyl:
I'll second Mickey's sentiments, Lee. Way to be a Dad! That's how we make good hunting partners.
Way to go Lee. The look on his face is worth more than a new bow anyday.
The joy of a father. The young man has a cool name also. I had two tradgang brothers give me two bows for my little girls, unbelievably generous. The joy I get watching them shoot and chase the rabbits and pigs. Thanks Lee for the example. God bless
Thanks, guys! I'm sure any dad would do the same.
It was a no brainer, really! I just wish the kid wouldn't outshoot me after having it for only a week. He shows no mercy, either!
Lee :banghead:
LOL. Thanks
