Title: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: Guru on March 26, 2007, 10:59:00 PM
...At Classic Bowhunting Co.

They've given me a very generous opportunity to be sort of a "field tester" for one of their new bows.

They sent this to me to "have some fun" with it. I certainly will do that. It arrived on Sat. and I shot it sunday quite a bit.

I'm short for time now,but I'll post some pix and leave you with this.....This bow is a powerhouse!!

I love the limb profile but there is noway i could shoot that grip. I like a very narrow throated, medium high wrist grip. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the bow.

Well, let's see, the master turkey hunter gets a 48" powerhouse just in time for the spring season.  Can anyone guess what the definition of "have some fun" might be?

I too can not wait to hear your honest feedback about the Sheepeater.  That little bow has caught my attention in a serious way.  Give it heck and put it through the paces.  And enjoy it too.  Great opportunity.  Thanks for the pics.

Hey Alex...,  :wavey:  I was just asking about you the other day.  Thought you moved up into the Absoroka, never to be heard from again.  Moved back to Tenn. I see.  Hope things are good with you and your family and nice to see you here.

Curt...you are gonna have to put that baby through her paces and tell me (us) what you think.  It didnt take me long to adapt to the grip on mine and I have been shooting it as good as any 60" bow I've owned at hunting distances.  I slapped on some sticky moleskin under the string and some llama string slilencers and she's real quiet too.  Unbelievable shooting qualities all the way around with my 520 gr. arrows.  Been shooting almost everyday and I'm still impressed. Nuff about me...lookin forward to hearin about your fun with the short bow.

Randy.

Howdy, Randy! Enjoyed your bear hunt article. Was that the same hunt I kept threatening to go along on but never did? Maybe we should pen a story together..."West Boulder Gophers, the New Dall Ram". I dunno, I just dont think they would buy it.   :D

I'll say it again, dont let a long draw scare you off of this little sweety. I was fortunate to be around during the development of this bow and it really is remarkable.

You will swear its a toy right up until the arrow leaves the string. Static tips + short working limb = a vapor trail! I'm sure the bow has only gotten better and these are two great guys. Glad to have had them as friends.

Yes Scott,It's very different from what I usually shoot. I'm a guy that has, for the last 20 years shot recurve with a bowquiver full of arrows. So a lot of that physical weight isn't there...this bow is a feather.

Yes Chad, the grip is the biggest hurdle for me right now because I shoot with a straight wrist. but it's not really bad at all and I'm working on a way to make it a little better for me.

No my thumbs aren't big at all, average size hands at best.

Cade's doing much better. He hasn't shot again yet,but probably will this weekend. Thanx for asking bud

Shawn, with my work schedule we might get a chance to shoot one sunday, but only if you come down here. Get a hold of ED and see if he wants to....

Bear's right, I can pull this bow to at least 30" and it's smooth as silk!

Right now I don't have a chrono to mess with, but I can tell you from bare shafting a bit that it wants a really, really stiff arrow shaft for a 55# bow. So I know it's shooting hard.

I guarantee this bow will surprise you in a positive way!!

Ralph, good luck with the turkeys bud

good pics. how is the handshock? youd think a bow that small in the riser section would have a bit of vibration??

Mine has no hand shock at all shooting slightly over 9gpp and is super quiet ta boot with a little moleskin (ran out of Bow Hush)and llama wool silencers.  As a matter of fact Marks was shooting real quiet the other day with nothin for silencers.

Yeah Curt I'm used to bow quivers too.  Been trying to get used to a hipper these days when carrying my Sheepeater and it's not so weird anymore.  Suppose I could strap a Great northern on but I just cant see-it on this bow.

Hey Chad, I touched your Bow...    :p    She's a bute Bud.

I don't know how long it is .......didn't even look.

Randy....might try one of those Eagle's Flight bow quivers.....Rob D sent me on cause he liked his so much, and I done went and bought two more.

Ron LaClair's got some two tone leather ones. ....and they are light, and you hardly know they are on the bow compared to other bow quivers.

Randy,
Some of that "Middle of Montana Mojo" you gave the bow should work just fine. These bows are special and unique, it is good to see them getting the attention they deserve.

I've been real happy using a Lakota style quiver.I will send you a note with my opinion on the advantages of the Lakota, don't want to side track this thread.

Maybe I will see my Sheepeater myself this week??

Chad...putting on the handlewrap of your bow this weekend, and should be able to ship it to you by mid-week, so you should have it by the end of the week.   It's a beauty and quite a shooter too!

Bayou...they are 47-48" long ntn braced.  Not sure what that is unbraced but they draw smooth out past 28.  Thats as far as most 60" R/D longbows. Dang Static tips are where it's at.

I've had a few guys ask what I was doing to the grip,so here's some pix. Various leather pieces placed in the right spot, then overwrapped. This is just temporary, but so far I like it. It's cushions it some, and makes it a more of a positive locater for an old recurve shooter like me.......

It looks big and bulky, but it's not at all. This riser is just tiny. It feels great for my straight wristed style.....

I've struggled a bit with finding the right arrows,it's still a work in progress. Best so far are tapered cedars around #80's....like I said, this bow is a powerhouse!!!

I mostly want to shoot wood out of this bow. So I have 22 tapered 65-70 Doug fir's I'm going to put in the classies, to trade for for something the similar, but stiffer....

Maybe you guys can help me a bit.....
What's causing this wearing out of the leather on the outer part of the shelf........

I'm shooting a red dipped arrow and you can see the red color streak thru the mark.No wear at all where the arrow is drawn. I've tried nock point everywhere from too high, to too low.

I can shoot a bare shaft and don't hear it hit,but as soon as I shoot a fletched shaft,I hear it as it leaves to bow.....

As recommended by Randy, I went to two nock points, one above and below. It definitely helped some, but it still does it.......

I love this little sucker, and am having a blast figuring her out......

Oh the humanity!   Just kidding.   Some old dogs can't be taught, eh Curt?

Are you still getting fairly consistent pressure through your hand?   Trying to move the point of balance higher, is probably messing a bit with your normal nock point, I'm guessing.   I don't know, but I like your enthusiasm.

Every bow we have built, and shot, before sending out to the customers, nocks consistently the same, and we are shooting them fairly consistently with both wood and carbon, and alum, though they don't shoot quite as well.

Keep at her, bud.

Title: Re: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: Guru on April 01, 2007, 03:28:00 PM
Mark..    :D   Do you mean I can't shoot this bow with a straight wrist? As in, all the pressure just below the shelf?

Cause I don't shoot worth crap with a heel down, broken wrist.......

Steve, That's what I thought too,but I went purposely weak and I still got the noise....
Title: Re: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: Gottabow on April 01, 2007, 05:52:00 PM
Curt..is it posible that you are putting too much preasure on the top of the arrow knock with your pointer finger?  I did have the same problem with short bows and that is why I went to shooting three under.  I have found that the set up with Goldtips 35/55 cut to 28"bop, 50gr brass insert and 250gr. points are shooting pretty good now.  Very quiet andextremely quick.
Title: Re: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: Guru on April 01, 2007, 06:13:00 PM
It could be, I guess.....But truthfully, I don't want to change the way I shoot at all. I've been shooting like this for 20+ yrs....

It's not like I'm shooting it bad at all, just not yet satisfied with my arrow flight. But it'll come.....

I raised the nock point even though my bare shaft told me not too and it seems to have lessened it some. I also changed the side plate and shelf material......

Like I said, having a blast!! It'll draw blood soon.....

Post by: Mark Baker on April 01, 2007, 08:11:00 PM
I'm not sure what the deal is Curt...I am certainly not a short bow expert, having shot longbows most of my life.  I do know that the shorter the bow, the more the little things seem to magnify, but heck, I'm having fun learning right along with you.

I do know (I should) that the bow is built with the center of balance....the intended pressure point while drawing the bow...in the center of the grip area, and appropriately tillered from there.  Therefore, moving your pressure closer to the shelf, like a higher wrist grip, will have some effect on the nocking point of the string...same as a 3-under shooter has to adjust.  But if you can get it all figured out, then it really don't matter.  As long as it will shoot for you, who cares!   It does make me scratch my head that it bareshafts so well, then kicks with fletches.   There are more experienced and capable folks on here that can help you with that, for sure.

Keep us posted.

The bow I got shoots like a house a fire.....just shooting a little higher than I'm lookin....probably just that the woodies are a bigger diameter cause I'm shooting some fat ones.  I'll get that fixed...no worries.

Getting great flight, and the windage is spot on.

Cool little bow let me tell ya.

Guru - Are you shooting three fletch or four?  If three, try turning the cock feather in against the bow.  I am not qualified to offer shooting/tuning advice but I had some similar issues once and was offered this option in the figuring process.  It helped me at the time.  Good luck and keep figurin', sounds like fun.
Title: Re: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: bbassi on April 01, 2007, 10:38:00 PM
Hi Guru, I'm with Forester with trying cock feather in. I've got 2 bows that I just can't shoot worth a dang with the cock feather out, but if I turn them around they shoot bullet holes through the paper and fly great. I joke with people that the arrows are made for right handed shooters, but you can't argue when it works.

Here's another trick that someone taught me years ago. If you're wondering what part of the arrow is hitting, take a can of desinex (the foot powder spray) and coat the back 8-10 inches of your arrow including the fletch and then shoot it. The powder will stick to the bow where it rubs and rub off the arrow where it's hitting the bow.

Good luck.

Terry, glad the bow is shooting great for you.  As I mentioned, I shot your bow several times, and almost kept it for myself!   I tend to shoot these bows a bit high at first, also.  Most folks do.
Title: Re: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: Guru on April 02, 2007, 05:43:00 AM
Thanks for the suggestions guys...but I always shoot cock feather in. But I did try the other way and the same thing......

I'll try the powder thing, but I can see that the quill from the bottom hen is cutting the leather where the red streak is......

How high is your nock now. I always need a high nocking point but with my new 54" recurve it is almost an inch and I was getting the same thing you are, wear big time on the outside of the shelf. Try going up another 1/8 or even 3/16ths. Shawn
Title: Re: Sheepeater Spirit from Mark and Brent......
Post by: Guru on April 03, 2007, 05:52:00 AM
Didn't get to mess with it yesterday...but the bottom nock point is at 3/8 right now, I think....I may try 1/2" when I get the chance.   But I've been up there before.....
