Title: Benefits of Chopping or Burning???
Post by: Caleb the bow breaker on March 26, 2007, 12:40:00 PM
Everyone,

Have been doing a little reading on the gang and still dont really see the economic benefit of using a feather chopper or burner.  It looks like you can only get one good fletch per full length feather. Also it seems that the cost of 100 pre cuts and 100 full lengths is basically the same.  So what am I missing??

The fun.............

Seriously, you are correct, there isn't a big savings.Using your own feathers from a bird tho could end up saving some cash.

Personally,I just like doing as much of the whole shebang as possible my self, and I enjoy the satisfaction of it all............just kinda adds to the experience for me.

Almost forgot.........if you use 4" fletching,you could get 2 vanes from each full length,but I use 5 1/2" so only get 1.

I use the scrap feathers for splicing and flu flu material.

I haven't ordered precut feathers in a while, but at one time, there were not that consistent in length.  They may be 1/4 longer or shorter.  I found myself needing to match them so all 3 were the same length.  You don't have that problem with a burner.  Manufacturing is probably better now.

Plus I can't neglect to mention the wonderful aroma burning feathers leaves behind!

I suggest your first time burning be done at the kitchen table with all the windows closed.  That way, you get the FULL experience.  Especially the part where your wife smack you on the back of your head!
