Title: Ron LaClair video
Post by: Clint B. on March 19, 2007, 10:06:00 PM
I really enjoy watching Ron LaClair shoot in "How to Shoot Instinctively Better Than Ever" and "Masters of the Barebow". The problem is, there isn't nearly enough footage of him. Somebody needs to produce a Ron LaClair video with shooting instruction, trick shooting demos, bowhunting segments & his autobiograhy - an entire video where Mr. LaClair isn't sharing the stage with other archers. I'd buy it in a New York minute & I'm sure many others would, too.

I'm only buying it if it includes the video of Norm Blaker kicking his butt! That would show Ron's humble side. I beleive in superheros when they have some weakness:)

Owlbait, I've got a lot of weaknesses and I'm certainly no superhero    :saywhat: ...   :D

I'm not making excuses because Norm's a very good shot but as you saw, I ran out of arrows before the alloted time. Norm always carrys several dozen arrows in that big quiver of his so he still had plenty left at the end.   :p

Also I was having trouble shooting to the right because I was using a osage self bow that I had just finished. It had no shelf or rest and I was shooting right off my hand. If a person hasn't shot a bow very much with no cut in he'll shoot wide on the arrow side until his brain gets use to the change. For me to hit where I wanted, I had to hold to the left which in the heat of battle was hard to do.

It was all in good fun and the crowd enjoyed it.

Ron,
Thanks for that trip down memory range. Norm is a friend of mine that I met through Tom Cable of Windstorm Archery. Good luck with the DVD, I'm sure it will be very successful.

Well, I'd certainly be interested in one. It would be neat to have one shooting a bow and throwing a hawk.

"For me to hit where I wanted, I had to hold to the left which in the heat of battle was hard to do."

I couldn't agree more. I once shot a tournament where I'd switched equipment at the last minute. When I warmed up it became obvious that the arrows were going about 6" left at 20 yards. Having left my other equipment at home,I told myself that I could compensate for that by just concentrating on a spot 6" to the right. Well, it didn't work that way. I shot about 6" left on every target but one. On that one I actually did concentrate on a spot 6" to the right, and I hit the javalina in the nose, almost missing the target.

Since then my creed is not to shoot a bow (in a critical situation) if it doesn't shoot where you point it.

Ron, I have a video tape in my collection called "BOWHUNTING FOR WHITETAIL DEER with Jim Dougherty" produced by Jerry Chiappetta & copyrighted 1986. Near the beginning, where Jim Dougherty is explaining longbows, they show some footage of longbowmen on the shooting line. They do a close-up on a shooter who looks just like you. If you don't my asking, is this you?  If so, do you recall this particular event & about when it was held? Was this the first video footage ever taken of you? Your bow, if it's you, looks more like an English style yew self-bow rather than a laminated Hill-style. Is that correct? Just curious. Hope you don't mind. Clint

Ron----the video is a must. For us western viewers who spend serious time in serious back country, don't neglect showing the importance of fine knives. As you know, it's part of the overall package, and we'd all enjoy seeing a few of your favorites and what you value in a knife, AND a bow.

The first time I read of your exploits was in an early issue of "The Longbow Shooters Digest." That magazine, and the articles in it, were exactly why I published Instinctive Archer Magazine many years later. I think I owe you one!
