So I am spring cleaning, decide to "test" an already good head, 125 grn Magnus stinger, 575 grn arrow, from a 60# widow
man I about dropped when this baby stuck in my test medium (square nosed shovel)
3 other well known heads blew apart, I had to hammer the stinger out of the shovel and it is still perfectly straight!!!!

Thanks Jim
I'm a better carpenter then a computer person!
wow thats a good test..
Yeah man....you can kill any shovel you have a mind to...
yeah i like the look of those they should do the job on most things alright. :biglaugh: only trouble is i dont eat shovels i dont think they would taste to good LOL!!!
Ha!
you have to barbe those square nose, crock potting will work but rust can set in --not good!
also did a ww, not purty
Long winter eh? I love them Stingers...
here is a 220 grn phantom, or whats left of it (//%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d43/Hornhunter2/100_1121.jpg)[/IMG]
let me try this...

Curious what the brand of the heads that broke,
Huh that's odd...looks like you hit the same hole with both shots!
Hey do it on video!
Here is a Honda I killed last fall!!! Simmons Head thru the onside quarter panel, thru the trunk area and buried in the offside quarter panel. I killed it a few times with my 54 Cal Flintlock too!!!! My buddy shot it a few times with Sonic heads and a Bowtech with VERY POOR RESULTS!!!! The head was garbage. You can see his holes. Those Simmons heads leave a BIG hole. For small game metal hunting, Stingers may be o.k., but for the truly large game metal, I recommend the Simmons line! LOL!!

Brian you need to resize that pic a bit. It's huge!
shots were an inch apart, go ahead give it a whirl---- please post your results!
only shot the ww, magnus and the 220 phantom
ww did OK, split apart at the tip and two blades bent, but basically still in tact
Now I could really care less what head you shoot specially if your favorite hollywood hunter shoots them, I,ve shot Magnus for a long time and have to say the stinger is the top of the line.
I'm more interested in there ability to preform, there is no rib bone in the world as hard as a good old #2 squarenose, this was just a simple try to destroy a head, go ahead, give a shot.
Verm13,
What are you talking about?? LOL!!!
I've seen a lot of these tests and to be honest with you I think there is a variable that is rarely pointed out that affects the results. I say this because the results can vary wildly from one tester to another with the same heads.
My conclusion is that "most" heads will hold up well to these types of tests "if" the broadhead is perfectly aligned with the shaft and spins perfectly, and then hits the target with the shaft directly behind the point.
I also believe that "most" heads will fail if they don't meet the criteria above.
Could be way off here, but I beleive there is something to it.
Stan
Stingers are great. I shot a whitetail at 12 yards with a 60 lb longbow, and the arrow went through bolth shoulders, and the deer dead in his tracks. I could not belive the penitration that broadhead had. The arrow was only 490 grains. When I went to re sharpen the stinger all I had to do was swipe it a few times over the steel and BAM razor sharp again. I could not belive how strong these stingers are. I was sold !!!!!!!!
Oh oh, HH has a new puter, look out now!
Good clean broadhead fun. It's spring. What the heck
Have to admit was 70 here today, we had spring yesterday, waiting for the elk horns to start dropping, cleaning the garage, where the he99 did I get that?
I bet that made a neat sound.
Is 50# enough for shovel ?
John
didn't kill any shovels this year, seen a few, just couldn't get close.saw a coal shovel, wow what a head, but no shot.did kill with those magnus stingers this year though, great head, hit a couple times with accusharpener and ready to go again.
John
I would say on your basic midwest shovel 50# would be fine, certainly enough for an alum. scoop
but out west here where your shots can be a bit furthur and possibly windy I like 60#, arrow weight is so critcal, but stay with a magnus and you will have a room full of shovels.
When did shovel season open? Dang, they are probably all spooked now and hiding.
I really DIG those pics. Thanks for the SCOOP.You could shoot a smaller shovel but then it would be trowel and error. Sorry could not resist.
I'm not sure I'm an ethical hunter... I nailed a couple of the big blue plastic ones when they were stuck in deep snow. They looked like they needed to be put out of their misery -- the handles had those funny bends in them.
Sounds like you did the ethical thing there, Woody. Mother nature can be pretty cruel on shovels like them...
I was very impressed with the sharpness of the Stingers. I shot my practice head into one of the newer foam type blocks probably 20 to 30 times and it still shaved my arm.
I am wondering, how those of you who have taken game with them, how are the blood trails you have had (using a four blade head)? I have heard great results about penetration, but mixed results about blood trails.
Thanks - Doug
stingers are awesome heads! I prefer the 2 blade as they seem a little better built.
check out Btreviews.com
there are some very good trad tests there, including real deer scapulas.
I'm gonna call PETS...People for the Ethical Treatment of Shovels....
On the other hand I might have to give the stingers a try next time I go shovel hunting. Nothing like being able to shoot multiple shovels with the same broadhead.
Construction sites are a good place to hunt shovels... they like to hang out around the cement mixers! LOL
You can also find them on I-75 in Tennessee. Most of the time there are several guys propped up on them. WHen scouting for them, look for the orange barrels.
Impressive photos, but am I the only one unhappy with the sharpness of the Stinger points? I've used the accusharp-type tools on these and, though they work great on the long part of the blade they don't get it done on the diamond tip. What do people like best for a method on the tip?

if you want to really test a broadhead
please post your results
I'm glad to see your results. I just bought some 125 grain stingers but haven't had the opportunity to try them yet. Sure looks to me like they'll get the job done.
Well, you have proven that Magnus Stingers are totally inadequate for trophy Caribou. Obviously you can't take a double shovel with one.
this is getting about as ridiculous as the dead cow thread on another site. keep it up - I love it.

Okie dokie...
Off side moose rib. 10 yards. Snapped it vertically and kept going. No damage to broadhead, but I did retire the arrow after I found it in the cutover. So how'd your shovel taste? :saywhat:
Sorry, Scott. Just busting on you a little. Are you coming to Berrien Springs in June? I still owe you lunch.
