Title: Forge pictures please... (Update,, forge is made!)
Post by: Osagetree on March 11, 2007, 05:41:00 PM
I am looking to find some pictures of your forges usd for knife making. Me and the boy are going to make one and give it a try!

I got my Son interested and if'n I can get him out in the shop, maybe I can get him to take interest in selfbow building too.

If not, I'll at least get him to strip the bark & whitewood off some osage staves for  fire starting material.

Search out the British Blades forums.  They have a forum dedicated to forging and show lots of home made forges, including a neat little two brick forge. Robtattoo here on the Gang is a frequent contributor to the BB forums too.

There are also lots of plans on the net.

Naw Frank, it's a Poor Boy (made from a freon tank)from that E auction site. For 155. plus the regulator it doesn't pay to go through the hassle.

Okay gang thanks a bunch! I appreciate your responses!

This is what the boy and I came up with today.
Scavanged the dump and made us a coal forge.

Now we need to learn how to use it. It did give me something to do and got the boy interested in making something traditional.

He is trying to make a hawk out of a railroad spike,,,we'll see!

Project supplies:

Roofing tar bucket, burned out the tar with kerosene.

Old wheel hub

A blower fan robbed from my building/shop junk.

Some links of chain a few bolts and some high temp sealer left over from a head gasket job.

Coal forge $0.00

Busting up lumps of coal found along our railroad tracks  (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/Osagetree/JoesForge6.jpg)

Hot steel pounding   (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v323/Osagetree/JoesForge3.jpg)

What do you think?

Now someone explain making a knife blade or hawk from a RR spike!

By the way one handed typing aint so easy!

OT,

Here is a link to the iForge site on Anvil Fire.  Go down to project number 12 for a rail road spike hatchet build along. Project 97 is a RR spike knife build.

 http://www.anvilfire.com/iForge/

Cool forge BTW.
