I ordered two actionwood riser blocks from Fedoras. They were supposed to be 18" long. Both have one end that is ragged with various lengths of laminations sticking out. I'll have to trim them to about 17" to get them square. Anyone ever had this problem?
razor I used to get some supply's from him years ago but had some problems too, so I went else where. It doesn't suprise me of your problem.
Have you called Mike and see what he says about it?
No I haven't called. I figured that they were just untrimmed and would be 18" when the slop was trimmed off. After measuring them that was not the case.
They'll still work but I was a little surprized after seeing the beautiful bows they sell.
That does not sound like the service you should expect from the Fedora's-they are a class act. Take a moment to call Mike or Jason. I have not bought wood from them but have 3 bows from Mike.
I ordered the stuff to build my bow took 4 weeks to get it . When I recieved my items there was supposed to be a 2x18 and recieved 2 pieces that i have to glue together wasnt what i expected on top of that the one piece had a 4 inch crack in it worthless . they were supposed to send me another piece in replacement with the rest of my order wasnt in there . ordered my limb bolt inserts and was sent the wrong thing . i am not happy and wont be coming back .
My stuff took about two weeks and they said it was because there was a machine down. ???
I'm going to call tomorrow but I think I'll just stick with Bingham from now on.
yeah they told me that there machine was down that was there lam machine . no excuse for cracked riser wood or ragged stuff . i will go somewhere else next time for sure .
talked to fedora today and I guess they have had A rough month there sending me my replacement piece of wood and hopefully everything will be back to normal for them this is my first dealings with them and really hate to bust on someone when it coulsd have been just a bad luck streak I know them well I have had a few myself . so I guess i will probably would give them a second chance to see if it went any diffrent . there lams were exceptionaly nice according to the fellow building my bow .
Only time and another order will tell.
ya,ijust finally recieved my order as well.also told of machine failure.what did floor me was the riser block came in 2 peices.i have to glue them together.nver seen that before.i called jason and he told me thats the only wat they could get the wood and reassured me it was stronger?my big concern is after glueing together the two peices of riser and shaping it,then putting it back in the oven when i cure the bow.scared of delaminations.anybody ever done a riser block like that?
all my bows have glued up risers, don,t thank you will have any problems.
what would a machine failure have to do with sending 2 piece risers??
i orered one time from them and that was enough for me
Fedora has been making risers that are glued (I think my 560 has 6 or 7 layers) for many many years. Never heard of one failing in any way. Jason told me the last time I was out there the same thing on strength. Don't know how he would prove that but even so, I wouldn't be concerned. Mike may be quirky but I've never seen someone get so much pleasure from playing with wood, he really loves the stuff and it's his life. It's funny (in a good way) to watch him rooting through piles of all sorts of exotic wood and he jumps out with a piece like he struck gold...but it always looks to me like an old plank :)
He's a stand up guy but of course nobody is perfect.
well guys gave fedora another chance like i said i might ! I ordered 2 riser blocks pair of lams and glue I got one cracked piece of walnut which was suposed to have been uncracked according to them when it left there place . got no glue on the first order they forgot it ! was told the glue would be shipped out that thursday and it was shipped out monday and last but not least was double charged for the one riser block . but it is supposed to be taken off of my card as of last monday ,. so I will not ever bother them again for anything . :banghead: What was I thinking got what i deserved I guess .
I've never ordered parts from them but when I ordered my 560 it was a very positive experience.Mike,his wife and son took time to answer ALL my questions and spoke to me at length on several occasions without making me feel like they were in a hurry.I've called back a couple of times to ask questions about my bow and I was treated like family.I am sorry for anyone that had a bad experience but I really find it hard to beleive that it was the normal way Fedora does business.Theirs is a family business with one friend so any of the problems that anyone deals with in a family could drastically effect their business.They have been in business a very long time,I think over 35 years and it is hard to believe that they have survived with poor service.
Guys, I can vouch for everything Dorris has said, as he had everything sent to me, and I have the pieces of cracked wood, even the one I cut off past(or so I thought)the crack and turned into a riser, still have that broken riser, which let go on the back of the limb pocket where unbeknownst to me the crack continued, sorry but 6 weeks is too long to waste on this kind of thing in my opinion, live and learn is my lesson here, and Jeff you didn't get what you deserved, if you had we would be fine, and my neck wouldn't be hurt again....Steve
I had the same problem 10 yrs. ago and never went back. I have also heard similar stories from others.

Canadian friend of mine who is a little known awesome bowyer, ordered some figured Shedua several years ago, paid for it and after repeated phone calls ..stil no wood!
I just wanted to let everyone know I wasn't disputing what was said about their personal experience.Just that my own limited dealings with the Fedoras was fine.
