Title: Who makes a really good youth bow?
Post by: Marblesonac on March 06, 2007, 10:16:00 AM
I'm looking for a custom built, left handed longbow with locator grip for my 12 year old daughter.

Who would you recommend?

Thanks

One of the best in my opinion is "Tim Meigs" in Carson City, NV. he has an add in TBM. You probably won't be able to get him on the phone until after 3:00 PM Pacific time, but his is in the shop until around 7:00 PM.

Dave makes a nice little Schafer longbow that is awesome.  I bought one for my nephew five or six year back and it performed a well as it looked, and it looked really nice.

Craig Ekin at Howard Hill Archery offers a youth bow (which I have two of and shoot when my shoulder is bad  :^)    It's called the Bear Cub, comes in 48" and 56" lengths, draw weights to 40# and pull lenghts to 26".    It shows in my catalog for $195 and delivery is a couple to three weeks.    Mine are really sweethearts.  Here are a couple of pix of my 27#, walnut riser.  Mine is straight grip, which is fine on these because they are small, but I'm sure Craig would do a locator on one:

Great Nothern makes a lil critter gitter that we have 2 of.  Also have a Black Rhino.  Both are very well made.

Elk Ridge also makes nice ones and since they don't put a lot of time into fancy finish they can offer a low price. Definitely worth checking out.

Ancient Spirits!!

My boy's recurve is bubinga and lightly stained 'boo limbs...it will flat out SMOKE a 1/4" shaft or tiny aluminum!

It's 20# @ 19", and was well under $200.

Give them a call, or PM me for more info...

Hey, Ancient Spirits... how about a pic of that recurve?   Sounds like a sweet little beauty... and a lucky young man!  I'm really delighted to see the number of possibilities for quality bows for youngsters.   Seems to me that if you start them with something they know is special, what they're doing will be special, too.

insttech1 that young man has very good form and especially his follow through. His drawing hand position after the shot shows good back tension. Looks to me that dad is going to have some serious competition.

My son has two youth long bows one is a Kohannah kids bow that cost $125 and is a very nice bow. The other one he won at the JLMBH it was made and donated by Bamboo I'm not sure if he sells them but if he does that would be the way to go. My son just loves that bow and my 15 year old daughter likes it also. The first pic is Joe with the Kohannah and the second is the bow he won.

Ben,
Yup...Dad is gonna get his butt kicked!  Tyler can shoot that bow at a 3D deer with me at 20 yards and hit consistently!

That pic was taken last year; he is now 8, and getting stronger!  Fortunately, that bow has been drawn, per the bowyer!, all the way to 30" and has almost no stack!

Take Care,
Marc

i have seen a lot of kids with the black rhino and they are not that bad on pricing I believe

many  different sizes and weights available and they offer a buy back/trade in on a newer bow when the kids outgrow them.
