Title: Staining Lams...
Post by: Rigs on March 05, 2007, 02:43:00 PM
Greetings All,
I was thinking about trying to stain lams with denatured alcohol and rit dye....anybody tried and wish to share their experience?

Did everything hold together when all was said and done?  Any problems at all in the process?

Thanks in advance.

Happy hunting,
Jason

Jason, I just stained some birdseye face lams with TransTint, an alcohol-based wood dye.  I don't have a finish on the bow yet so it's only shot a couple of arrows, but all seems just fine.  Just be sure to practice on some sample pieces (sanded to the same grit as you lams) to be sure that the stain is neither too light, nor too dark.  Should be just about a no-brainer!

I built several bows using just the concoction you're considering several years ago.  Sold the bows.  As far as I know, they're all still together.  I used hardwoods in all of my bows -- red elm, maple and maple actionwood.  Never tried it on bamboo, but should work.  Good luck.

I had good luck using dyes from Guitar ReRanch, they are alcohol based.  They look good, and no problems with glueing up.  The dye dries fast and seems to have no effect on strength of the glue-up.
I tried some Rit dye, cutting with alcohol, on some scraps.  It seemed very "bland".
This stuff from Guitar ReRanch is very potent, and you'll have to use it sparingly with the alcohol.

This is a bow I just finished using Fiebing's leather dye on culy maple. I've also used rit dye.  (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h36/kalispell/Schlegelsbow006.jpg)
