Title: Howard Hill longbow help
Post by: tadpole on March 03, 2007, 07:14:00 PM
I have a Big 5 on order, should be here in a couple weeks.  I'm needing help on a few things.  It will be 50#@28" 68"long.  What spine arrows do you guys recommend (cedar)?  I plan to cut them 29.5 with 125gr. tips.  3 5.5 sheild cut feathers.  I've got hush puppies on order, do I need to put them at 1/4's.  Thanks.

Tad... minimal amount of Hushpuppie material at the 1/4 mark will make it quiet as a whisper.

Nothing like the unfettered beauty of a Hill bow. Smooth in the hand and sending arrows down range without so much as a flirt.

Just love doin it like Howard did!

Let me see if I can dig up the picture of my Hill Big Five.

don't know how much help I'll be... I have a short draw, 25", but i shoot 28" arrows.   I just made up a batch of cedar arrows that spine 50 - 55 and seem to shoot well in all my Hills from 48# to 55#.

Good luck with it.  You might be interested in the Howard Hill Shooters email list... 60 or so guys all shooting Hills and exchanging information.   I'm sure there are some there shooting your weight and arrow length.

I actually bought my arrows from Craig at Howard Hill. My big five is 47# @28" the The shafts are 5/16 dia. and fly like darts. I had asked Craig what the spine of them were and he said .5 deflection I'm not sure what that would work out to in pounds. Maybe someone else could shed some light on that.

My 60# Big Five shoots great with the nocking point set at 1/4, and the brace at 6 3/4 It's a 68" bow. Yours may be differnt.

Charlie I see the stabilizer secured to the riser but, is that a left handed bow being shot right handed? and is that a plastic rest nailed to the riser? Please explain
and just love that color stirng, Joe Skipp would just like that one

Jim... I posted that pic to try and get a rise out of somebody...anybody! Only got two. Dang it!!

The bow is a right handed Hill Big Five, 66"64# from the John Shulz era.
My buddy Vance "Iron Bull" Brewer colaberated with me on the picture.

That is an elevated rest... self adhesive, not nailed. The stabilizer is on a gadget adapter taped to the bow. And a Selway quiver attached.

For the record, on that bow and my own, Vance and I don't care for anything on the bow except what comes from the factory. Even string silencers seem a bit excessive... the dang bows are just pretty quiet all by themselves with the right brace and arrow weight.
Never could understand upsetting the perfect balance of a longbow by putting a quiver on it.

I didn't see the stabilizer at first, the rest flipped me out bad enough!!!    :scared:   I once saw a HH longbow on an auction site with a Kwikee Kwiver bolted to the side of it, just about made me sick.
