Title: Knife refinishing needed.
Post by: Izzy on March 01, 2007, 01:13:00 AM
Besides pure archery,my favorite thing from trad gang are the knife makers so if Id ask anyone it would be you guys and Id trust you all as you amaze me with how decent and honorable everyone here is.And I havent seen a cheesy knife here yet.I have been thinking of getting some fine scales put on the knife my dad gave me before he passed. To me the sentiment is in the blade and I think of him whenever I use it so losing the wood wont be so bad.We never got to hunt as much as I wish we had, but he knew how much hunting meant to me.So Im interested in different options.Id be interested in mammoth, sheephorn, antler, snakewood or bocote in that order. The knife is a Case Arapahoe fixed drop point.Full tang about 4".Ill post pics tomorrow with the help of my Queen.I saw mammoth ivory at the SCI convention so I have an idea it wont be cheap but let me know if any one would be interested in trying something out.Any help and price estimates would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Herk

Israel,
http://www.texasknife.com/TKS_Mainframe.htm  has everything you're looking for.  stag scales will run around $30, sheep around 45-50, and mammoth last time I checked was ~$90, but the price isn't on the website.  I have a bunch of bocote.

If you get the materials, I can put everything together for you (or walk you through it).

Israel, make sure whatever choice you make is stailized first.  Bocote is cheaper than Snakewood, antler may be the most economical. All are good options to make a knife you'll be proud to carry and possibly hand down someday.
