Title: PA Trad gangers, interested?
Post by: Jerry Jeffer on February 25, 2007, 05:33:00 AM
I've been seeing a lot of threads in this forum as well as others about lack of deer and too many coyotes in PA. First, I would like to invite any of you willing to come to the Poconos, please come and hunt with me. Let meet each other and have fun. There is a lot of state land near my home, lots of access, and lots of deer there. I don't see many bow hunters either.
Second issue. The State of PA allows Coyote hunting 365 days a year, day or night except during deer seasons (day only). Use this as an excuse to get out and hunt when all other seasons are closed. If you are feeling that yotes are impacting the deer, here is your chance to go get 'em. I see yotes often, and still see a lot of deer. Any one?

I'm in Schuylkill county, but I work mainly in Monroe county for a construction county.  Been working in Stroudsburg for the better part of the last year.  I'd love to do something like that, but now is kinda iffy.  What, with an 8 month pregnant wife and all.  I'd be in though for other times.

Wow, what a great response. Funny a lot of you mentioned Stroudsburg. That's where I live. I do hunt Delaware state forest. Don't get me wrong, the deer are here, but you have to earn them just like any other place. Bentpole, I hunt a lot around where you are hunting.
Archery season is the month of Oct. I would like to do some thing early season since I hunt NJ mostly. Any way, there are some big parking areas where any one from out of state could set up a camper or a motor coach.
Here is a link to the state DNR site for any additional info needed for out of staters etc.

Let's try to follow up on this in the spirit of Terry's post about hunting with a trad group.  Opening week might be fun. Any other sugestions are welcome.

Geeze...I grew up hunting deer in the very areas you guys are talking about! Old mine road....Hunted that and still recall missing a buck from about 15 yards with a recurve I finished from a Bingham kit. Since I was a Pa boy and I was hunting Jersey...I really felt like a world traveler of bowhunting. I was 17 then. I grew up in Bangor Pa. Have lived in Colorado for 25 years but still get home to hunt. I miss Pa. If thewre is a get-to-gether I may have to make the trip.

Bentpole, I'm not sure of the acres in total, but on the NJ side you got from the Gap all the way to the NY line. About the same over in PA. Like you say, more acres than hair on our heads. Miles and miles.
Tim, I hoping to get a group for early bow season on  deer, but if you want to do some yotes, that's cool too.

Hatchet Jack, I usually hunt the big swamp area just south of you on 402. Do you belong to that club with the huge fenced in lake? I hear that place is very big club.
Any one going to Whittingham, maybe we can get together and discuss this there over a camp fire.

Hey, Jerry Sounds interesting pick a date. I would like to hook up.
We should really do something around the deer season also maybe.

I cut my teeth hunting in Pike County, Porters Lake that's the fenced in club right along 402, turn right to the Irishman's Swamp trial, my Grand Pop ran a camp there in the 30's and 40's, the trip was done by horse and wagon then up 402, Flat Ridge Road, Five Mile Meadow, Pecks Pond- Great Uncle had a cabin there, Hatchet Jack know Ned Snyder?
Tarkill area, Mud Pond, lots of great places. I have wanted to make a trip back up there but not sure how the hunting is now days.

First yote I ever seen was off the Flat ridge road I think that was about 1973 way before the game commission started stocking them, Ha, Ha you Pa guys will probably get that one.

Mike

Sorry for the late comeback, bentpole,JerryJeffer! Yes Pecks Pond is about 15 miles north of MC. The DSF runs all along Rt402 in many spots. I do most of my deerhunting off 739 SGL180 on the ridge up from Smith Swamp. I also Bowhunt SGL 209, that is some rugged country over near the Delaware River.I Turkey Hunt the DSF near my camp at PeckPond in the spring and we do quite well. I shot a 18lb Gob 9" beard last spring. Lots of Turkey in  the DSF.The deer numbers are down though. The rifle hunters shot up all the does  :banghead:  . I will say there are some nice Rack Bucks around. Maybe we can hookup sometime and do some hunting with JJ. JerryJeffer that club is Blomming Grove and that is a millionare club only. You need big bucks to hunt in that club. I do hunt the DSF off of the Power line that buts up to their land. Lots's of scrub oak and food in this part of Pike Co. The deer numbers are down in Pike but the Turkey are behind every tree. I love Pike co and its many swamps. I wouldlove to hookup with you guys, maybe in the spring and fall! Keep in touch.

Hatchet, I'm putting in for my spring Gobbler permit. Yeah nice woods around Delaware state forest all along 402. Also the area you mentioned along the Delaware is rugged. All the cutting the state has done is really kkeping the habitat nice allowing a lot of scrub oak to come up and blu berry bushes every where. So maybe we could try some turkey together as well.
