Anybody tried the little poplar shoots? I thought I read before they are not strong enough. All this talk in the other thread has me wondering if anybody has had any luck with the shoots of the tree.
Try it. I love poplar for shafts but I don't recall using the shoots. Jawge
I got mine finnished yesterday and shot them today. So far I like them. I just had some issues with the shafts I got. I ended up with 9 that shoot pretty good out of the dozen shafts I purchased.
How many Shafts did you Purchase at once D.G?
I purchased 12 shafts and they were in pretty bad shape. I broke two right off trying to get them straight. For awhile I thought I was only going to get 6 good arrows out of the batch.
Jawge, Just a little follow up.
I cut 5 shafts out of little trees (shoots) on the 26 of feb this year. out of the 5 only 3 produced acceptable shafting. I cut these shafts at over 1/2 inch at the fat end and then took the bark off. dried and straightened by wood stove til last week. The 3 shafts that made the cut come out as follows: 1) 31 " weight 395 grains and spine of 41 lbs 2) 30 " weight 365 grains and spine 42 3) 32 " weight 460 grains spine of 50 lbs. these shafts have only been drying for a month but seem ready to go. they are a little too light for me but will work out of my wifes bow. shaft diameter is 3/8 on point end and 5/16 to 7/16 on nock end. They are straight as shoot shafts go.
