Here is a bow that I recently built for a friend. Dave is an avid hunter and uses a compound bow. Over the past year he has been hanging around our trad group and spending more and more time shooting our bows. He seems particularly enamored with the self-bows that we regularly bring to the club. I decided it's time he took the plunge and owned his own gear. So this Saturday here is what Dave will be receiving: vine maple (spliced sister billets), 65" ntn, 50# @ 27", elk hide handle with Strunk-style wrap, rattlesnake over rawhide backing, cocobolo tips and handle overlay, and reddish brown leather dye job. The belly was heat tempered and holds about 1.5" of reflex. He's seems excited about owning his own long bow - I predict we'll be seeing a lot less of his compound around the club.

Very very nice as usual Gordon. :notworthy:
Pretty darn trick! You did a wonderful job on this one------how does it shoot?
Jeff
Dang Gordon, thats a sweet one! You and that vine maple....do you ever work anything else? Don't you have access to any yew up there? or do you like the vine maple better?
That looks like one sweet bow. I think you are right, I don't think you will see much of that compound bow. Welcome to the fold!
WOW! That's about all that comes to mind>
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Ryan, I do have access to some yew and I'll make a few yew bows this year. But vine maple grows like weeds out here.
Jeff, she shoots about as good as anything else I've shot. I enjoy shooting it.
Gordon, another beautiful bow as usual. You truely are a very gifted bowyer. Now ya got me thinking about going and digging through my VM pile. Trouble is I already have about 5 or 6 bows in the works that are only have done. Can't wait to get over that way and see some of those sweet things you are kicking out. Keenan
Keenan, everytime I look at one of your bows I'm inspired to do that much better on my next one. When it comes to craftsmanship and creativity you're right at the top of the heap. I'm definitely looking forward to meeting you soon.
Gordon
That is nice! I think he'll see the "soul" in that bow, and that the wheelie bow has none.
Gordon, Gordon, Gordon. I am running out of disk space, saving all the pictures of your bows.
Man that's a BEAUTY. :bigsmyl:
Gordon, she's a beauty! Well done. Jawge
Thank you all for the nice comments. It is sure is fun to post bows on this board with so many people that appreciate this sort of thing.
Gordon, another beautiful and extremely well tillered bow of yours.

Can I be your friend? Very nice
Now that is a family heirloom!
Very nice work :0)
That's a nice looking bow Gordon, David is a lucky man.....
David
It's prettier every time I look at it, Gordon, and I've already gone back and looked at it three times on my TBD pages - :goldtooth:
BEEYEWTIFULL BOW.
That vine maple is some awesome stuff especially when Gordon gets through with it.
Nice job Gordon thats one of the nicest looking home made bows I've ever seen. Sure would like to shoot it.
John
:notworthy: Nice :notworthy:
Gordon~
Your bows are true works of art! Most Excellent!
Oh yes, that is a good looking bow.
Bue--.
Gordon, that is a real work of art, I bet she shoots great with that tiller. I love a straight longbow, that comes back to a slight reflex when unstrung. You have just inspired me......there is a snowstorm coming...should be snowed in the shop for the next few days.....off to the shop! Again..beautiful bow, thank you for sharing. LittleTree
OK, sure it is a great looking bow, but the hat thing is making me nuts. Which one is it, Gordon, as you are modeling two different hats? You need a "signature" hat. I am leaning towards the kind of Alpine looking hat. It makes me want to yodel and drink cheap wine out of a bota bag. The other hat just makes me want to watch a Humphrey Bogart film.
That's funny Bob. The Austrian hat is what I wear when I am shooting or hunting. I wear the other hat when I'm just kicking around town or in the rain. I have a different alpine hat that I wear when I go fishing that all of my fishing buddies know me by.
Ghost Dog,
Gordon told me that he gets those yodeling hats at the Keebler cookie factory. He waits until the end of the work shift then jumps one of the littler guys when they're not looking. He said he now has two of them. He does make a nice bow though... :biglaugh:

Hunting elk and deer up in the Cascades I often wondered if vine maple would make good bows...that's a definite YES if someone like Gordon is doing the bowmaking. How long do you season the wood Gordon? I might give this bowmaking thing a try. David
David, it takes a couple of months for a split log to season - shorter if you rough the stave out first.
