I had a "light weight" ghillie longcoat last season and for me, the dang thing was just too uncomfortable....heavy and hot! Are there any longcoats/suit available out there that are truly light weight and somewhat more "packable"?
Any info is appreciated! Mike
Cabelas sell some but I don't remember what the brand is.
I'm planning on making my own this year. I thought one of those bug suits would make the perfect base. sew in some light netting and tie in the strips. Should be pretty lightweight and a lot cheaper than a commercial suit.
Mike, contact Voodoofire1 he's in East/Central IN.
He made me one that I like a lot. It's more like a poncho than a jacket, but it works well and wasn't uncomfortable during deer season.
I used a shannon bugtamer suit and sewed on burlap stuff. You can adjust it to your shooting style real easy. Most of the time the jacket will be enough. It is airy, but with the newer synthetic material it would be perfect(more lightweight). If you want it thin, it is usually warm and the insect may eat you,but not with that setup. I did`t have one bite where the suit was after a New Brunswick spring bear hunt, but my (at the first day) unprotected hands got 50-100 bites in just one day!
I must be a cheapskate, I make my own from an old jacket keep old worn out camo, jeans, shirts, etc cut them in strips sew them on, also stold some macremay rope from my wife cut that into strips sewed on unraveled it looks just like grass also used old brown fabric, anything that matches your surroundings, crude but very effective infact better than what you can buy.
ASAT's 3D leafy suit. I use it year round in California and I used it in Arizona for javelina.
This is an excellent query. I understand that various US military sniper training courses require candidates to make their own ghillie suit/camouflage.
Does anyone know what these people do, and how they do it?
I believe the military uses the Bushrag stuff to make their suits.
